  • Digital Marketing Hacks for a Deep Tech Startup

This article has been contributed by Mr. Mahesh Gaur,  Head of  Marketing at SanchiConnect.

A deep-tech startup’s mature stage is different from a regular startup’s, so the marketing should also be different.

If you are not yet a product market fit, I believe you should focus on acquiring a few clients to get closer first. You can try many methods including content creation and distribution, SEO, SEM, personal connections from your network, etc. It’s essential to experiment on a small scale using various approaches (and small costs). In general, I would start focusing on content earlier than planned because it helps in so many ways, like defining your brand, gaining thought leadership, and making sales materials.

However, your marketing plan should be different if you have reached the PMF (Product Market Fit) stage. I will describe the steps in this article.

But, why am I writing this article? Am I qualified to compose this article?

From talking to and working with more than 50 entrepreneurs on our platform, SanchiConnect, I’ve learnt a lot about digital marketing for this specific sector, which is “deep tech.”

I am the head of Digital Marketing at SanchiConnect. Ohh! what is SanchiConnect? SanchiConnect is an open public platform for deep tech startups, investors, enterprises, and service provider networks globally. We are backed by a prominent PE fund and Angel Network’s founding partners.

Let me introduce myself before I begin this article. In 2014, I founded Qonfuse, raised money, and subsequently sold the company. Then I began to feel like a boss; I have money, I’m 24, so let’s go travel, shop, party, and hang out. After meeting over 1000 people, I realised that the main business is community development. So, I founded HODM, which has grown to become a very active community of 1.3 lac digital marketers. Life is good: I sell courses, deliver talks at institutions and businesses, and receive freelancer commissions. Then it happened: I met Sunil Shekhawat, a well-known deep tech ecosystem personality who has led the “NASSCOM Deep Tech Club” for the last 5 years. He is a colleague, mentor, and well-wisher.

Sunil was building SanchiConnect and was looking for entrepreneurs to join the founding team. We met, discussed the opportunity ahead and in a week’s time, I joined the team. Now we are a team of 4 passionate entrepreneurs building a futuristic platform.

Let’s get back to the point and go over the procedures a deep-tech startup must follow.

Digital Marketing Hacks for A Deep Tech Startup
    Important Things to Consider

What is a Deep Tech Startup?

Digital Marketing Hacks for A Deep Tech Startup

The following are the prominent digital marketing hacks that a deep tech startup must follow:

Market Size of the Digital Advertising Industry Across India From 2017 to 2023
Market Size of the Digital Advertising Industry Across India From 2017 to 2023
    1. Being Active on Twitter and LinkedIn: It is very important these days to stay active on platforms like Twitter and LinkedIn. Be consistent. This is a process. You can’t go viral in a day, and you can’t go viral with predefined tools. It’s a prayer, and you don’t know when it will be answered. Be nice and don’t try to be mean.
    2. Use Influencer Marketing: The right kind of marketing is when people start talking about your product on the right platforms. In past, people use to follow the ads of big celebrities like Shahrukh Khan, Priyanka Chopra, and Virat Kohli. But now, everyone knows that every celebrity is promoting for money, and the return on investment isn’t what it used to be. Micro-influencer marketing does work now, though. People follow industry leaders or people who are doing well in a certain niche, so if they talk about your product and include it in a Twitter thread like “10 best products to follow” or “5 best tools for engineers” or whatever fits with your product, you’ll get more attention. You can find the right people who have a lot of followers on their profiles and connect with them to get them to write about your product.
    3. Create a Blog: Post new articles on a regular basis to get your product ready for search engines. Also, create backlinks from authoritative websites. So, what’s the point of getting backlinks? It raises your domain authority. What does “domain authority” mean? Aah, look, if you meet Narendra Modi Ji and take a picture with him and post it on social media, your network will see you as a more important person. This is how domain authority works, too. If I got a backlink from a site like CNN, BBC, NY Times etc., that site’s authority would be passed on to my domain.
    4. Content Creation: Content is king, as the old saying goes, but distribution is public. A king is only a king in his own empire and for his own people. If you go to another country or place and tell people there that you are the king, no one cares.
    5. Product Positioning and Messaging: Why does your company even exist? Having a clearer vision of your objectives will help you craft a more effective positioning statement. Talking to your clients is the best way to develop your positioning statement. You cannot construct an effective brand positioning statement from the sky. Instead, you need data. Using data, your positioning statement will become an attractive magnet for the appropriate customers. Typically, you do not sell directly to consumers. Your brand should show what the product is all about. Communicate with your customers, utilize a spreadsheet to organise your interviews, and identify and assess your competitors/competitive intelligence.
    6. Use Ahref or SEMrush: Make use of Ahref or Semrush’s content plan and do keyword research to make sure your content is always good.
    7. Paid Media Ad Copy: Use an ad library or ad spy tool to look at your competitors’ ads and find out which ones work best in your niche and on which platforms. I think that LinkedIn, programmatic ads, guest posts, media buying, etc. are the best ad platforms.
    8. Develop Your Sales Funnel: Try to make a landing page for each product that is different from others. Use stories, add testimonials (videos and text with images), and gated content.
    9. Webinars: Try to invite leaders in your industry to do a webinar and ask them to share it on their social media channels.
    10. Create Product Briefs, Presentations, and One-Pagers: Creating brochures and other materials for conferences is another digital marketing hack for deep tech startups.
    11. Events and Sponsorships
    12. Use an Existing Database
    13. Networking

    Important Things to Consider

Along with the above-mentioned digital marketing hacks, the following are some of the important things to consider while indulging in deep tech startups’ digital marketing:

    • Figure out where leads drop off or where lead nurturing may be getting stuck.
    • The A/B test method.
    • Competitor advertisements and Keyword research.
    • The content must be written by experts in the field.

Hence, these were some of the most prominent digital marketing hacks that every deep tech startup must follow for attaining the best possible results in the industry.

This is where you don’t sell your product but give an idea to them about the problem that they are facing.

If you can get into their minds about the solution you are giving to them for their problem you will be surprised to know that they will start coming to you after a certain period. Therefore, do things smartly rather than doing them with difficulty.

    Use online methods

It is difficult to conduct business activities, especially when it is a startup and thus there is pressure on the sustainability of your business. If you choose online methods for conducting business then you may cut down maximum costs and also help protect your assets.

    Conduct an in-depth market research

Just like you will do a SWOT analysis of your startup business you also need to do thorough research on the market. You are now the boss of your company and getting to know all the dynamics of your business should be your responsibility.

If you are well-prepared you will not be needing capital from someone else. Look for online tools on the internet that will help you conduct online surveys.

Do not rush for an office space

There will be a lot of things going on in your mind once you have started your business and one of the major things that you think about is having an office of your own. Well, if you are thinking about it then that’s well and good but there will be no need for an office if your products or services do not do well in the market.

Give your business some time to grow which may take some time and then you can look for an office. New offices will be needing types of equipments like furniture, computers, CCTV cameras, and many more which will only create a burden on your expenses.

    Tactics for Bootstrapping Your Startup
    Tactics for Bootstrapping Your Startup

Therefore, it is suggested that you design a proper business model and a business plan. A proper business plan helps the business to work efficiently by fulfilling its achievements.

    Work from home

Offices rents’ are going up as each day passes by and you need to cut down expenses not increase them. Working from home can do the job that most offices can’t. If you can have the option to work from home comfortably then why not use the benefit of it. This way you can concentrate better on your work and you will save a lot of cash.

Do not rely on Client’s credit

Even though your startup business is a work-from-home work do not give your clients products and services on credit but rather ask them to make immediate payment. This is just the beginning of your business and you are already making expenses and credits can make things worse.

Ask your clients to make payments as soon as they receive the product or service. This way you can keep a proper account of the business that you have conducted.

Take help of your family members

Your family members can be useful in some kind of work for your business. For example, your brother can create a page on social media and he will solely be responsible for promoting your business on different social media platforms.

Similarly, you can even take the help of your relatives who can be useful in different activities. This way you do not have to hire an extra person to do a simple job and you can concentrate on other things.

    Use low-cost online tools

Since you are working from home you will be needing different kinds of online tools for marketing or conducting other business activities. Use tools that are available at a cheap price not necessarily a free platform but a cheap one will do the job.

Since it is just the beginning of your startup business you need to make sure that your expenses are not extending your budget. For the time being, using cheap tools can be useful and later when your business is flourishing in the market you can opt for expensive or premium tools.

    Avoid purchasing unnecessary tools

Whether you are buying an online tool or an offline one make sure that the tool that you are purchasing can b of some use for the business. This is one of the most crucial tactics for bootstrapping your business because you do not want to go into debt by making unnecessary purchases. Purchasing expensive tools that will be of no use for your business will only create pressure on your finance.

    Learn digital marketing

With changing technology there are so many upgrades that are being made each day. You need to learn about the technology and use it to your benefit as your business needs to be recognized by more people.

A digital marketing course will help you understand how to market your business digitally. If you know about digital marketing then there is no use spending time on the courses. Apply what you have learned and see the results.

    Work on your business image

There is a saying called ‘First impressions are always the last impression’ which is quite true when it comes to business as well. Your new business should be presented in front of the people in such a way that they are impressed with it.

The image of your business will play a crucial role in getting customers from all around the country or globe. Use appealing photos, images, videos, animations, and other such kinds of things so that customers are attracted towards it.

    Always be resourceful

Being resourceful does not just mean focussing on your resources but planning on how to grow them. You should gather enough money to fund your startup business because in the initial stages of your business will be difficult to find investors.

However, there are several free online platforms where you can get the benefit of crowdfunding. Whatever decision you take make sure it will help you with your work keeping the cost structure under your budget.

    Motivation plays a key role

Even if you follow anyone tactic mentioned above you need to be motivated at your work. Every day when you wake up you need to keep aside all negative things but move forward with the intending to grow your business.

You should always be eager to learn new things from the market and your competitors so that you do not fall out from the competition. Motivation will also help you bootstrap your startup.

    Conclusion

Whichever tactic you choose to bootstrap your business try to do it with a focussed mind because it will help your business itself. Even if you are facing a lot of challenges continue doing the same thing but in a different way.

Few Tips To Help Your Webinars Stand Out

    • Keep them between 30-45 minutes long:
Not many viewers want to stick around for an hour to listen to you talk. In fact, recent studies show that 41% of attendees prefer webinars of 30 minutes, and 44% of attendees prefer those up to 45 minutes long.
    • Research your attendees:
The eventual goal of your webinar is to generate leads and make them purchase your product or services. Thus, you need to know what type of audience is attending your webinar. Before you host the webinar, it’s decidedly useful to conduct thorough research on the type of people that are attending, their demographics, professional domain and expertise, and industries they belong to. It helps you get a brief idea about what your audience is expecting from you.
    • Morning is the best time to hold one – Attendees prefer webinars held at 10 or 11 am
    • Leverage Analytics:
It is essential to leverage analytics to understand what kind of message your audience is most responsive to.
Not only this, there are plenty of analytics tools like Google Analytics and Facebook Insights that can provide you with a far more detailed, customized, and personalized breakdown of traffic on your webinar concerning a variety of parameters. With analytics, you get data specific to your business that is aimed at maximizing the potential of your webinars.
    • Always hold a Q&A at the end – 92% of webinar attendees want a live question and answer session at the end of a webinar
    • Wondering how many attendees is a good number? The average number is 148.
    • Announce webinar beforehand:
You should also plan to announce your webinars numerous times before launch, including via emails, social media, and other teasers. Making a short promotional video and uploading it on to your social media sites, Reddit, or YouTube accounts can also bring in large numbers of attendees.
    • Well timed promotions:
The time and day of the webinar are not the only significant influences on attendance. The date of the announcement of the webinar is another essential factor in the registration rate. The 2017 Webinar Benchmarks Report found out that 25% of registrations occur on the day of the webinar, whereas 23% of registration occurs more than two weeks before.

    Conclusion

All things considered, webinars are one of the most cost-effective elements of any SaaS marketing strategy. Webinars are great for any SaaS business because you either have to show off your software or train your customers to use the platform (or both!) in a scalable way. By conducting your presentation in a thoughtful and engaging manner – and sticking to some of the best practices I’ve discussed – you will find that the rest of your marketing objectives may be easier to achieve too.
