With almost every company adopting digital transformation initiatives and growing demand for e-commerce websites, the global market for web development services is increasing exponentially. Web development services include creating websites hosting, and maintaining them.
Initially, people considered publications and journalism as the only legitimate news sources. But Matt Mullenweg saw the potential of blogging ahead of time and, thus, came up with Automattic. The company develops software that provides everyone with web development and hosting services.
In this article, we’ll break down Automattic to find out its startup story, founders, funding, partners, growth, challenges, business model, and more.
Automattic Inc. provides web development services. It’s a parent company of content management system provider WordPress. The open-source CMS powers approximately 455 million websites worldwide and sees 20 billion page views monthly.
Moreover, Automattic’s e-commerce platform, WooCommerce, backs over a quarter of the top 10 million e-commerce sites. Facebook, Microsoft, Spotify, and Salesforce are some of the company’s top customers.
Automattic – Industry
Web development is about designing and developing websites and software for individuals and companies in multiple industries. The industry’s global market size is anticipated to grow from $60.71 billion in 2022 to $96.75 billion in 2028, with a CAGR of 8.08%.
Covid-19 forced all industries to go digital, which resulted in market growth. With more and more companies operating via e-commerce platforms, the demand for web development and hosting services has surged significantly. Automattic, Classic Informatics, Simform, Iflexion, OpenGeeksLab, SPEC INDIA, and Powercode are major players that captured the web development market.
Automattic – Founders and Team
Matt Mullenweg – Founder and CEO, Automattic
Matt Mullenweg is the Founder of Automattic Inc. He is an American entrepreneur and web developer who attended the University of Houston. Currently, Mullenweg is the Board Member at ecoAmerica and the New Museum of Contemporary Art. In addition, he holds the position of Lead Developer at WordPress and CEO at Automattic Inc.
Automattic Inc. is a globally distributed company with a team of 2,000+ employees in 84 countries, speaking over 90 languages.
Automattic – Startup Story
When working at CNET, Mullenweg also worked on WordPress. During that time, he noticed that the company owned a handful of domains from their acquisitions, and ‘online.com’ was one of them. According to Mullenweg, it was perfect for developing a more accessible version of WordPress, allowing users to start a blog in just a few clicks without any coding.
However, just like the entire industry, CNET didn’t see the potential in blogging and, thus, was not on board with Mullenweg’s idea. Mullenweg was determined and quit his job after wrapping up his projects with CNET. He incorporated a new startup named Automattic alongside with few of his fellow WordPress developers.
When working at CNET, Mullegweg discovered that the platform used to battle with spam bots on sites that allowed comments. And this is what led to his company’s commercial product, ‘Akismet,’ a spam filter that could be used for WordPress and other blogging software.
Automattic was officially launched in 2005, with Akismet as its first product. In September 2010, Automattic transferred the WordPress trademark and control over bbPress and BuddyPress to the WordPress Foundation. Moreover, in November 2016, Automattic managed the launch and development of the .blog gTLD via a subsidiary company (Knock Knock, WHOIS There).
Automattic – Mission and Vision
Automattic aims to make the web better. It is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion, with a common goal of democratizing publishing and commerce to enable every individual with a story to tell it, anyone with a product to sell it, regardless of gender, language, income, politics, or where they live across the world.
Now that starting a WordPress site is completely free, Automattic generates five main revenue streams:
WordPress Plans
WordPress.com has a freemium version, but users can subscribe to three premium plans to gain more control over WordPress sites. With paid WordPress plans, users can create a higher-quality website.
VIP
Automattic offers a subscription-based model with monthly VIP hosting plans starting at $15,000.
Premium Themes
Users can choose free and premium themes provided by WordPress and other third-party companies. Automattic earns profits or commissions from each theme sold.
Apart from WordPress, Automattic also generates revenue via:
Premium Plugins
Automattic charges for Jetpack, Akismet, Polldaddy, WooCommerce, and many other premium plugins.
Referral
Affiliate marketing is another revenue source for Automattic. The company links to the WordPress hosting providers on its sites and earns a commission when a referred individual purchases the site.
Guided Transfer
The one-time fee for guided transfers is C$169.00 per blog.
Automattic – Products and Services
Automattic provides blogging services such as VIP hosting and a VIP support program. Its most notable offerings include WordPress VIP, Jetpack, Longreads, Simplenote, Tumblr, The Atavist, Crowdsignal, Pocket Casts, and more.
Automattic – Challenges Faced
One major challenge that Automattic faced during the initial phase of incorporation was that it created a commercial counterpart to an open-source project that could be used and modified for free. People were quite apprehensive about the idea.
The company’s second challenge was when it launched, and its first employee resided in Ireland. It’s when Automattic’s employees worked from Vermont and Texas while Mullenweg was in San Francisco. Since the idea of remote work was not mainstream, people couldn’t see this work model as a productive one.

In-House Web Development vs Outsourced Web Development? It’s a topic that has been debated by almost every website owner and business owner in the world today.
It’s no longer just a question of how much money you can save on hiring a team of developers to make your website. There are many other factors that can influence your decision when choosing to outsource or in-house design a website.
You’ve decided to outsource your web design. There are many factors that may have drawn you to this decision including the budget, time, and technical skills of the company doing the work for you. But what about the cost?
What’s the true difference between in-house development and outsourcing web design? Here we compare a few points. Let’s get started.
In-house web development is when you develop your own website, using the tools and software that you want. You can use any technology or programming language that you want to build it, and the only limit to how long it takes is how much time you have available. While this may seem like an easy way to get a website up quickly, it can also be very expensive.
Advantages of Using In-house Web Development
In-house web development often provides you with a better understanding of your company’s needs and processes, which can lead to more effective solutions. Outsourcing can often leave you with a different perspective on what you’re trying to accomplish than the one you have in-house.
In-house web development helps small business owners build their brands and grow their businesses by providing them with an online presence that reflects their values and mission statement. Outsourcing can take time away from other aspects of business growth (like marketing or hiring), which isn’t always possible if you’re just starting out as a small business owner with limited resources available at the moment.
Disadvantages of Using In-house Web Development
A big disadvantage is an increased cost. When you are hiring someone who knows what they are doing and has years of experience in the industry, it means that you will have to pay more money for them than if you were simply hiring someone who was just starting out.
Another disadvantage is that there is no guarantee that your website will actually work properly when it goes live on the Internet. This can be especially problematic if you are trying to sell something or have other types of personal information available on your website; this is why having a professional company handle all aspects of your project is recommended rather than trying to do all these things yourself.
Outsourced Web Development has been around for quite some time now. It’s one of the most common ways of getting a new website created for businesses or individuals who don’t have the time or expertise to do it themselves.
Outsourced web development companies will typically take your information about what kind of site you are trying to build and what features you need in order for it to be successful on the market, then use their own experts in order to create a great-looking site with all of the necessary features needed by their clients.
The cost of an outsourced web development company varies widely depending on how complex your project is going to be (i.e., if they will be creating multiple pages instead of just one).
• It increases the ability to focus on other aspects of your business while the development is being done.
• It’s usually cheaper than in-house development since you don’t have to pay for employees and office space.
Disadvantages of Using Outsourced Web Development
You’ll have less control over how things go if you outsource this type of work; therefore, make sure that your team understands how much power they have over their employees’ work ethic and performance standards so that they feel comfortable acting as supervisors over them when necessary (e.g., when dealing with difficult clients).
Another disadvantage of outsourcing web development is that if you fail to complete the project then your company will suffer from it and this may lead to some consequences such as losing customers or spending less on marketing efforts. However, if you do it right then there are no disadvantages involved in this kind of project as everything goes according to plan and no issues occur which can cause problems for your business.

A major consideration in the web development industry is whether to carry out development in-house or to farm it out. There are many factors involved when deciding whether to carry out web development in-house or outsource it.
In-house development is the most reliable option, but it’s also the most expensive. You’ll need to hire developers who can write code and manage the project from start to finish. You’ll also need to invest in tools like a web editor that makes it easier for your developers to create and edit the content on the site.
On the other hand, if you want someone else to build your site for you, then Outsourcing development is an excellent option because it saves time and money. Vendors will provide everything from design through implementation, so all you have to do is pay them! This type of development is ideal if your website has a large number of pages or users who will be accessing the site frequently (like a business).
Another factor is speed. If you know what you want your site to look like, then outsourcing may be a good option for you because companies can work faster than if they were doing it themselves. This can help get your website done faster and with less stress for all involved parties involved (both customers and business owners).
Another consideration is how long it takes for a company to deliver on its promises. Some companies take longer than others because they might not know the answers upfront; but if they do know them ahead of time, then this could be an advantage too!
In-House Web Development or Outsourced Web Development, Which one to Choose?
It’s a good question without any clear answer, But it is wise to analyze your need and budget before choosing either In-house web development or Outsourced web development. Both in-house and outsourced web development can be successful, but they have their own pros and cons.
In-house development is more cost-effective than outsourcing, but it also requires more time and effort to make sure everything’s done right. Outsourcing is more affordable than in-house development, but it can be difficult to find someone who specializes in your niche or industry.
Outsourcing a website design can seem like the best option for most companies but think about it from this perspective: if you were trying to hire someone to design a business card, what would be their qualifications? Or how do you choose between two different clients’ needs? Are they going to look at your business card or listen to what you have to say? Will they create something that represents you and your brand well or will they end up designing something that doesn’t work with what you need? That’s why it’s important to consider both sides before making an ultimate decision on which path will work best for your company.
To put it in simple words, your choice should be based on your business and how you want to operate within it. Seeking outside, independent help is a good idea if you wish to overcome the hurdles of project ownership and management, or if your business simply can’t handle ongoing development. On the other hand, if you want to expand your in-house development team or are looking to grow your company’s expertise in this area, that’s something worth exploring. Whatever path you choose will depend on your specific needs and circumstances—which is why it is good to consider all options fully before making a final decision that could greatly impact the future state of your business.
FAQs
Is outsourcing more cost-effective?
It depends on the company. If your company is small and agile, then yes, it’s probably not worth the extra cost to outsource. You will be able to work with a firm that has better training and experience, which means they can get the job done faster and cheaper. But if your business is growing quickly, or if you don’t have the time or resources to manage multiple contractors, then outsourcing may be a good option for you.
Why in-house development is the best option in development strategies?
In-house development is the best option in development strategies because it allows you to maintain full control over the process and create something that you are proud of. Even if your company is small, you can still do this. You can hire someone who has experience with the tools and technologies you need for your project or even a freelance developer who will work with you to create something amazing.
How should agencies determine whether to outsource or develop Web sites in-house?
Agencies should determine whether to outsource or develop Web sites in-house based on a number of factors, including: -The agency’s size and resources -The size and type of project they’re working on -Whether or not they have any experience developing or maintaining an online presence -Their knowledge of the industry’s latest trends and technologies

Web Development Types
Web Development is classified in two ways i.e.:
Front-End Development (also known as “client-side” application).
Back-end Development (also known as “server-side” application).
Let’s get to know more about ways of web development.
Front-end development refers to anything that you see on the page in the browser once it is loaded by the browser. So anything outside of JavaScript and CSS will be considered front-end web development.
Front-End Developers are responsible for structuring, organizing, designing, behavior, and many more to a website. Whenever we open any website responsive, performance, and designing all of these things come under front-end developers.
Front-End Development mainly consists of HTML for structuring layout, CSS for designing purposes, and JavaScript for making website interactive.
HTML: HTML stands for HyperText Markup Language. They are the HTML programmer that creates the content, navigation, and other parts of a website. When building a website, you will need a web designer who can build custom website templates to your specifications. You will also need an HTML programmer to create the code, project management, and other components that are needed for your website to be functional.
CSS: CSS stands for Cascading Style Sheets. CSS is a way for a designer or developer to control how elements appear on the screen. Let’s use as an example a heading that says “My Article”. If you’re using HTML, that heading would look something like this: My Article. With CSS, you can use that same My Article tag, and make it display in many different ways using CSS.
JavaScript: JavaScript is a programming language used to make websites interactive. However, it can also be used for a variety of other things as well such as adding functionality, a programming language for games, user interface enhancements such as using an alert box or a modal window or even sending an AJAX/XHR request. There are a lot of incredible tools out there that add functionality to your website for you.
Once you know about the basic concepts then you can start learning libraries and frameworks such as React, Angular, and Vue.js.
What is Back-End development?
Back-end development is the process of building software that runs on a web server and most often interacts with a database. Sometimes referred to as server-side development. The backend is the part of the website you can’t see. It’s what makes your website function and allows you to update, add, or delete content.
It’s the opposite of front-end development, which is what many designers, marketers, and people in the creative industries develop.
The Back-End development is specifically designed by some popular programming languages i.e. JavaScript, Java, Python, C++, PHP, etc.
Now let’s get to know more about back-end languages and how these languages are allowing us to develop back-end parts.
PHP: PHP, which stands for Hypertext Preprocessor, is a server-side programming language commonly used to build websites and apps. It can be found in most web servers and is often referred to as a “buildup” programming language because it adds functionality and capabilities to HTML documents and other source code.
C++: C++ is a statically typed, free-form, multiparadigm, compiled, general-purpose programming language. It is regarded as “both elegant and efficient and is one of the most popular programming languages in use today”. It’s also used as a back-end language.
Java: Java programming language is used by lots of developers all over the world to develop a wide range of projects and applications like software, games, and Web-based apps, along with other operating systems. People are using different Java tools through which they can create a lot of programs both small and large.
Python: Python is an open-source programming language used for general-purpose programming. It can be used to develop desktop applications, web applications, network applications, and even games. Some of the major companies which use python are Google and Yahoo.
JavaScript: JavaScript is one of the most powerful languages in the world today. It can be used anywhere from a small website to a web-based game as well as almost anything else you might think of with just a little bit of creativity.
Node.JS: Node.js is most popularly described as server-side Javascript and it is used as a part of web development as well as for creating network applications. Node js has become extremely popular these days because of its diverse uses and simple working mechanism. It is applicable on almost every platform and can be easily implemented on any website or place which requires a real-time response.
These are the programming language which is mainly used as a back-end language. There are some back-end frameworks such as Express, Django, Rails, Laravel, Spring, etc. that makes your life so much easy and more productive.
So these are the basic technologies that are mainly used in the back-end part and you have to learn any of them. Once you have a great knowledge of these technologies you can say yourself a Full-Stack Web Developer.
Now, most of you have heard about “MERN” and “MEAN” tech stacks.
MERN (MongoDB, Express, React, Node): If you have chosen React as a framework then you will become a MERN developer.
MEAN (MongoDB, Express, Angular, Node): If you have chosen Angular as a framework then you will become a MEAN developer.

Each startup is going to require a web port of some kind. Whether the startup is going to launch e-commerce solutions, mobile applications, or some hardware-based output — being able to manage the website is a crucial job. Startups tend to pay an immense amount of time on content, branding, and presentation of their sites. Technopreneurs can take this main project, and handle it while saving money and allowing other members to focus on their duties (thereby improving efficiency for the whole team).

Tips to Become a Successful Techpreneur
Interestingly though, successful techpreneurs across the business do share some characteristics and some best methods. Of those, some of the tips that are considered necessary to become a successful technopreneur are mentioned below.
Persistence
Techpreneur requires to be persistent. Every great idea will have simple beginnings, but it is only possible by unwaveringly seeking an idea and fleshing it out regularly that can one hope to actuate and convert it into a finished product. No matter how tough this route may appear, one needs to stay true to it. Having a positive attitude irrespective of the situation eases harvesting tools to take on the challenges.
Tech Savvy
Good techpreneurs need to have a broad technical grasp of their product and the underlying technology included. Even though it is usually the subject matter experts who will be developing the technology for the product, it will be your thought and understanding that will finally guide them.
Intuitive
A techpreneur should trust their intuition. To be successful, a techpreneur should be able to intuitively imagine and harvest unseen opportunities in such situations where the rest of the world only sees obstacles. Look beyond the obstacles and try to decipher what can be used for your business.
Belief
Firmly believe in your product. Be very clear about what unmet need you are striving to address. And be ready to step into uncharted areas to bring your product to life and make it grow. Having a risk-taking mindset assists techpreneurs well.
Communication
It is essential for a techpreneur to clearly and precisely communicate the intended value proposals to all stakeholders – the target clients, the investors, and the employees. Good communication saves time, effort, and money. Not only must one regularly communicate with people looking to invest and vet your concept, but also with your team looking to grasp at the more specific aspects of your product and achieve your vision.
Resilience with Flexibility
Experiencing failures is a part of entrepreneurship. There are so many inherent uncertainties that some setbacks are usually unavoidable. It is important is to learn from such experiences and take all measures not to replicate them. Overwhelmingly difficult situations do arise, and in such circumstances, it will be necessary to keep patience and self-control.
The Right Team
The team is fundamental to the success of the idea. Companies and corporations fall untimely losses by having unwise recruitment and team-building strategies. A techpreneur must invariably centre on building a team of experienced and hard-working people having complementary skills. The team members should have faith in the vision and capabilities of the techpreneur and should be willing to work for the greater good.
Quality
A successful techpreneur needs to guarantee that the products and services are of good quality. Also, they must be better than their competitors. Identify that consumers buy a product when they see value in it, which is only possible when the product offers more than what they pay for it.
Conclusion
Becoming a techpreneur demands constant dedication and hard work. Despite the qualities and abilities, what many ambitious techpreneurs hardly realize is that becoming a techpreneur is not an end in itself. It is the beginning of an experience and a journey to savour and relish.
