Chalo app is free and readily available on Google Play Store. People can download and start using it right away to track their buses live, and in some cities, they can also buy their bus passes/bus tickets on the mobile app.

The Chalo team has been spending a lot of time and effort on feedback from the early versions and has continuously improved the app over the last 3 years. On an average, there is a new version released with improvements every 2 weeks. New features like trip planner, emergency SOS, live trip sharing, and multiple languages have all been added over time.

The most recent update includes a live passenger indicator, which shows users how full the bus is against the recommended capacity in that city. This is especially useful as buses are operating with dramatically reduced capacity due to COVID-19.

Chalo strives to track the local buses using GPS trackers, thereby offering a service that is crucial for the traffic-clogged roads of the Indian cities. Chalo also helps the riders by showing them the updates of the next bus and thus, minimises the wait times and the anxiety. Chalo partners with the bus operators in order to equip their fleet with tracker-enabled public buses.

    Chalo – Industry

India’s Shared Mobility market is expected to grow at an annual rate of 6.73% from 2025 to 2029, reaching a market size of $134.3 billion by 2029. The Public Transportation market is projected to have 1,204 million users by 2029.

The bus industry of India is huge indeed. India ranks among the top 10 in the world in the bus segment. Over 30,000 vehicles are sold in India every year, say reports.

    Chalo – USP

From tracking the bus timings to buying bus tickets, Chalo is not only making life simple for bus travelers, but the startup is also helping bus operators to increase their number of riders.

The need for improving bus services has already been established, and many city governments and bus operators are looking to bring in technology to improve services. Their main challenge has been the investment needed, and the ongoing maintenance, updates and usage of technology to increase ridership.

Chalo’s unique business model solves both these problems for them, and by charging only for increased ridership, effectively the bus operator gains by partnering with Chalo, rather than spending money on technology and services.

    Chalo – Startup Story

Getting stuck in the city traffic is annoying yet something that most of us Indians need to face. Given the heavy traffic jam that is being an increasing bother each day, moving around within the city has turned out to be a challenging task. The increasing numbers of private vehicles is a major reason for this congestion of roads within the city. Chalo co-founders Mohit, Priya, Dhruv, and Vinayak had many discussions on such issues and realized that developed means of public transport can be of much help to get out of this situation.

“Why are international cities that have equally bad congestion – like Hong Kong, London, New York, and Singapore – still much easier to get around in, and live in? The answer was simple – they have more efficient and highly reliable public transportation, which people prefer to use over their private vehicles. This is eventually the only way to reduce traffic congestion on our roads and make our Indian cities also more livable, with everyone having healthier and better lives.” quotes Dhruv Chopra

In their research, the Chalo Co-founders realized that, in India, buses are the single largest mode of public transport (48% of all trips) and also have the largest improvement opportunity. While intracity train and metro facilities are present only in a few cities of India (with a limited footprint), local bus services are present in almost every city and cover the length and breadth of a city. However, unreliable and inefficient bus systems mean that people chose private vehicles vs buses. Thus, the team saw a huge opportunity in using technology to make buses more reliable, and improve the passenger experience.

The name ‘Chalo’ comes from the very core of the startup’s business objective of “making travel easy for everyone”.

    Chalo Logo
    Chalo Logo

“We wanted the name to be easy to understand and relatable across passenger segments and across the country. Chalo is one of the most common words used for beginning any form of travel and hence is a perfect fit. We also love the fact that we use the word “Chalo” several times in a typical day” says Chalo co-founder Dhruv Chopra explaining the idea behind the startup’s name.

Chalo – Business and Revenue Model

Chalo partners with buses and their operators to help the consumers or the end-users. Therefore, it leverages the B2B model to benefit the end-users, thereby wiping off their wait times.

Chalo deploys live tracking, payment systems, and operations services for bus operators without any upfront investment on their part. This means that the entire capex and initial investments needed in hardware like GPS devices, Electronic ticketing machines, making cards available, are all borne by Chalo.

Chalo partners with bus operators to increase ridership, and charges operators a share of the increased ridership, thus making it a win-win situation for all.

    Chalo – Funding and Investors

Chalo has raised total funding worth $143.9 million in a total of 10 funding rounds to date.  Their latest funding was raised on May 22, 2023 from a Series D round where they raised $45 million from Avataar Venture Partners.

    Chalo – Challenges

To make bus travel hassle-free, there is not just one but many factors that need to be taken care of, which is quite a herculean task for the Chalo team. Within the first few months of launching Chalo’s live tracking services in Indore, which significantly reduced the wait time at the bus stops, the team realized that live information on when the bus is going to come is only a part of the problem. Aspects such as improving the reliability across the network, ensuring buses were better kept clean, were all equally important.

On further scrutiny, they found that there were a few inherent issues with the ways bus systems were managed. Barring a few cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Chennai, where the entire city routes are managed by a single operator, in most other cities, the bus routes are auctioned to private bus operators. A typical bus operator manages 1-20 buses and owns rights over certain bus routes defined by the government. The service levels across the city are therefore not uniform, leaving a customer dissatisfied. Also, small private operators tend to compete with each other rather than work towards the betterment of the overall network, and their micro-optimizations often result in unreliable bus services for passengers. Research shows that a passenger tends to shift very quickly to other means of transport like a shared auto if buses do not run on time or even purchase their own 2-wheeler if they can.

To provide a pleasant and a standardized travel experience to the bus riders, the team at Chalo is constantly working on bringing in a systematized management of services across the entire bus network of a city that could impact the way bus services were delivered to passengers and increase ridership.

The different aspects on which ‘Chalo’ is working includes

    • Delivering the latest technology to bus travelers – live tracking, tap to pay cards, mobile ticketing and passes, etc.
    • Taking ownership for the entire bus experience – from cleaning buses to training bus crew, to ensuring adherence to schedules, etc.
    • Improving bus routes and schedules to suit the changing structure of a city.

To successfully implement this vision, Chalo partners with existing bus operators, and the various government entities involved in delivering city transport services – for example, the smart city SPVs, city transport SPVs and departments, road transport corporations, etc.

With the acquisition of Shuttl, which came on October 26, 2021, Chalo is currently aiming to bring in premium bus services and plans to expand internationally, starting from Bangkok, where Shuttl already has its presence.

    Chalo – Awards

Chalo was featured among India’s Top 50 Start-ups by Nasscom in 2017.

    Chalo – Growth and Revenue

The first break for Chalo came in 2017, when Indore’s largest bus operator agreed to install Chalo’s GPS devices on their buses, thus enabling users of the app to live track those buses. But this still was not 100% of the city’s buses, so it was not useful for all bus passengers.

The first city to launch the Chalo App with live bus tracking across 100% of its buses was Bhopal in May 2018. With just a press conference to announce the service, word spread among bus passengers rapidly, and within the first month itself 25% of bus travelers in Bhopal were using the Chalo App to live-track their buses. Today, nearly all bus passengers with a smartphone in Bhopal have installed the Chalo App.

Chalo has grown rapidly over the last few years. From the first 100% live tracking city of Bhopal in May 2018, to over 51 cities in India and select international markets, which it has expanded to, as of 2023, is an amazing feat, no doubt! Chalo boasts of an incredible pace of growth, in which it grew 1 new city strong each month for 2 continuous years. Also, the product offerings to users/passengers kept expanding. Besides, the company also kept bringing in the latest and best technologies from around the world to improve the passenger experience.

The Chalo App is currently used more than 10 million times each month. Chalo operates with a fleet of 15,000 buses in around 22 cities, completing over 150 million rides each month, as reported in September 2023.

“Our company’s core purpose is to “make travel better for everyone”. Having implemented its integrated journey planner – the Chalo app – in 23 cities across India to offer live tracking of buses, and as the pioneer of cashless payments for buses in India, Chalo is the preferred partner of many smart cities in the country, helping them in their mission to increase the adoption of public transport among the residents. The intent of starting Chalo was to make it easier to use public transport in India reliable and pleasant and prefered choice for everyday travel.” quotes Chalo co-founder and Chief Marketing Officer Dhruv Chopra emphasizing on the startup’s vision.

How Chalo Ensured Safety of its Passengers during the Covid times!

As soon as the nationwide lockdown was announced, all the bus services were halted across the country. Now, when the services resumed, the focus shifted to ensuring safety across the bus network, for each and every passenger and everybody else.

The Chalo team studied the virus transmission risk in buses and found that 95% of the risk comes from cash exchange in the bus, whereas just 5% comes from passenger-to-passenger transmission and surface transmission.

The risk of Covid-19 Transmission in a bus arises from the following sources –

    • Cash + Paper Tickets = 3,000 opportunities

[1 Conductor x 1,000 passengers x 3 opportunities each (giving cash, receiving change, receiving ticket) 95%]

    • Passenger to Passenger = 80 opportunities

    [1 passenger x 40 co-passengers x 2 trips daily (Assuming full bus load of 40 passengers) 3%]

    • Surface Transmission = 70 opportunities

[1 passenger x 35 surfaces x 2 trips daily (Assuming passenger touches nearly all available surfaces) 2% ]

Yet, the current efforts around the country focus only on de-congesting the bus, which is the last 5% of the risk.

Chalo doubled down on implementing contactless payments in buses, which removed 95% of the risk right away, making buses 20x safer. Chalo has also introduced the world’s first “100% trace and contact” system for public transport, which tracks 100% of rides across the network, enables reverse contact tracing, and ensures that 100% of passengers are contactable.

This means that if any passenger is detected/suspected as infected, each of their co-passengers for the last 2 weeks can be reverse-looked-up and contacted, to enable containment measures.

This system makes buses safe, even safer than domestic flying.

    Chalo Revenue and Financials

Chalo’s revenue increased from INR 26.17 crore in 2021 to INR 35.75 crore in 2022, showing limited growth. However, its net loss more than doubled, rising from INR 33 crore in 2021 to INR 66.4 crore in 2022.

Chalo has registered operational revenue that equals to INR 27.63 crore in FY21, which was INR 27.43 crore in FY20. Its growth was flat during FY21. However, it is important to note that the Chalo losses were also reduced significantly by around 42%, which became INR 33 crore in FY21.

    Chalo – Future Plans

Chalo aims to boost the use of sustainable e-vehicles, including buses and e-bikes, while enhancing its technology to achieve 100% digitization of buses.

After the acquisition of Vogo, the CTO and Co-founder of Chalo, Vinayak Bhavani said, “This acquisition offers Chalo key strategic gains. Now we will be able to offer a convenient and cost-effective option for bus passengers to travel to and from bus stops, solving the door-to-door daily commute. This will increase bus ridership and serve our core purpose of making travel more convenient and reliable for all.”

Our goal is to become one of the top travel brands globally when it comes to vacations. Given that we have the piping/infrastructure in place in terms of automated bookings, independent modules there are a lot of opportunities for us to tap into newer businesses – Hari Ganapathy

    Pickyourtrail – Industry

As per various reports, the total outbound travel market will be valued at about $40Bn by 2020. As per a recent WTO Report, India will account for 50 million outbound tourists by 2020. Again, as per a report by a leading OTA in India, the total outbound “online” market is $3.3B.  If you take in the global vacation market, that is a much larger number.

“We strongly believe that this is neither a winner takes it all market nor a shrinking pie; there is a large headroom for growth for us,” Hari says explaining the outbound travel market.

    Pickyourtrail – Founders and Team

Hari Ganapathy and Srinath Shankarnarayanan are the founders of Pickyourtrail. Hari and Shankar are friends since college days. Both the founders are passionate travelers and it is their love for travel that motivated them to start Pickyourtrail.

    Hari Ganapathy

Hari Ganapathy is an alumnus of IIM Bangalore. Prior to founding Pickyourtrail, Hari worked with prestigious companies like  Cognizant  Technology Solution, Macquarie Bank, Britannia Industries Limited, Reckitt Benckiser and InMobi.

    Srinath Shankarnarayanan

Srinath Shankarnarayanan is the calm that every organisation needs. His ability to break down the everyday chaos into digestible smaller units is priceless. Srinath enjoys both math and aeroplane modeling! He is the brain behind the routing, pricing and personalization algorithm at Pickyourtrail. He holds a Bachelors in Mathematics and an MBA from NMIMS Bombay. His ability to talk across subjects right from Sitcoms, bikes, wartime books, plane building to complex algorithms make him a great person to hang out with!

    Team PickyourTrail

Pickyourtrail – Startup Story | How was Pickyourtrail Started?

Pickyourtrail began as an attempt to break how vacations are currently been planned and booked by travelers. The seed to all this began in August 2012 when co-founders – Hari & Srinath went on a Europe trip.

Ardent travelers themselves, the duo had put in more than 2 months to fully craft their vacation. This included planning end-end, bookings, and visa processing. It was during their trip they stumbled upon fellow travelers who were all on packaged tours. Interacting with them, Hari & Srinath understood they were literally rushed between destinations and their urge to discover new experiences wasn’t fulfilled. The travelers, on the other hand, were amazed to see the flexibility Hari and Srinath had in their itinerary and that piqued their interest.

Once back home, the duo was bombarded with pings asking for details on how they went about planning the entire trip. These interactions slowly multiplied and this lead to an idea that changed their career roadmaps forever!

Pickyourtrail was a name that embodied choice and travel.

“In fact we got early customers calling it Pickmytrail and luckily we got that domain as well :)” Hari says.

Initially, Pickyourtrail’s tagline was, Stop Touring, Start Travelling, this was easily relatable to the new age travelers who didn’t want to be tourists. That was also in sync with the company’s early goals of getting more folks to travel at their own pace and style. The company’s current tagline is ‘Unwrap the World’.

“As we matured and built a brand, we now have moved to Unwrap the World. We believe this helps us position the brand globally and has a lot more emotional layers than the earlier one” – Hari says explaining the thought behind the tagline

Pickyourtrail’s first logo was aimed around a play on infinite options that were possible if we traveled.

    Pickyourtrail’s first logo

The current logo was re-built with the need that the old logo could not easily fit into various shapes and color backgrounds. Pickyourtrail wanted to move to a logo which could scale across collaterals and use cases. The new logo symbolizes a flag and P and a baggage tag as well. The ideation behind this was – a flag is generally used to symbolize a group of people united by a cause or value system.

    Pickyourtrail’s current logo

    Pickyourtrail – Launching Startup

Pickyourtrail was  launched initially as an activity market place – the positioning was – “when was the last time you did something for the first time?” While there was a lot of traffic on the product, the traffic to conversion was quite low. Interacting with the customers, the team realized the biggest problem was no hook to book. With hotels and flights, pricing and availability were strong hooks. With an activity, there was no real hook. In this process, they realized that planning an end to end vacation was a huge hassle.
This time around the team decided to just build a minimum viable product for end-to-end travel planning, and had a simple landing page. This got Pickyourtrail almost 10000 sign-ups in the first few weeks and there was no looking back!

Pickyourtrail’s initial landing page which attracted 10000+ signups within a few weeks

Looking at the great interest that people showed towards end to end travel planning, Pickyourtrail launched VEHO in 2016 –this was its first attempt at building a product where travelers can create, customize, and book vacations online.

“We were quite skeptical about market response and hence launched it under a new name VEHO. We scaled Bali on the back of VEHO and then brought it back under the mother brand in 2017” – said the Pickyourtrail founders.

    Pickyourtrail – Revenue Model

Pickyourtrail earns revenue from affiliate commissions or partner commissions that come in from the partners with whom the bookings are done.

    Pickyourtrail – Funding and Investors

Pickyourtrail raised series A funding worth $3 Million in February 2019. The company further raised an undisclosed sum on March 22, 2022, from a clutch of investors including CRED founder and CEO Kunal Shah, Adit Parekh, Vina Ahuja and other existing investors. The total amount raised by Pickyourtral is more than $3 mn.

    Pickyourtrail – User Acquisition

Pickyourtrail acquired its first set of customers from referrals and word of mouth.
“When a product or service solves long-standing pain points of customers, it accrues good karma. I still remember how our first landing page (personalized vacations, crafted by travelers) was a huge hit! We got 1000 sign-ups within a week. Our emails kept buzzing. And we actually had to start charging folks to start sending itineraries cos there was so much demand”Hari recalls

Speaking about Pickyourtail’s approach to customers Hari says,“I think like most good products or services, there is always a latent demand and we seem to have hit that wall with our clear positioning. The challenge has been to continue the same amount of quality even as we scale. Every customer whom we brought on board was not a transaction but a longer LTV(Lifetime Value) view. That view has helped us build trust and build the ever-increasing repeat and referral cohort!”

Pickyourtrail also used social media extensively to reach out to customers

The first step was to ensure that we had enough followers on the Facebook page. This was around 2013 and Facebook still let you bulk invite friends to like pages. We ensured that every single friend of ours helped us gain more followers by inviting folks”.Pickyourtrail  concentrated on posting original travel content that was inspirational. This helped the company gain a lot of engagement on the page without having to actually spend.

In between, Pickyourtrail also dabbled some ideas in Twitter where it would automatically be alerted for any tweet with vacation/itinerary. The team would jump in and answer those questions and plug Pickyourtrail.

The next hack that worked for Pickyourtrail was sending interesting offers to its subscriber base. Over the first 6 months, the company managed to get up to 5000 email user base and that short tactical campaign helped them garner more monies.

Hari shared another interesting technique that the Pickyourtrail team employed to get customers on board “At one point we went into competitor Facebook pages and pulled out numbers of folks who were requesting for an itinerary and called them. You would be surprised that almost 8/10 folks were unhappy with the competitor cos nobody would have responded. So we tweaked our strategy a bit and started calling folks only after a couple of days :)”

The Pickyourtrail team also used groups in FB wisely.

Rather than  promoting itself, the Pickyourtrail team used its travel knowledge to answer questions in those groups and at the same time spoke about Pickyourtrail.

Besides, answering on Quora also worked for the company. Pickyourtrail answered about everything under the sun with respect to outbound vacations which helped it attract more customers.

Currently, Pickyourtrail is actively running campaigns (paid/organic) to grow its customer base and deliver happiness.

If we had to reflect on the initial strategy – it was around building good content and distributing it. Be it FB, Twitter, Quora. And this when combined with some tactical strategies like Twitter lead alerts, or FB groups it worked quite well. Once we had a flow of customers our execution capabilities ensured that the cycle of repeat and referral kicked in as well.

    Pickyourtrail – Startup Challenges

Hiring and scaling the tech team was one of the main challenges Pickyourtrail faced early on. Another issue that existed was that many supply partners did not have an online presence, making things tough for the Pickyourtrail team.

As Hari explains, “Once the tech hiring happened, we realized that a lot of supply partnerships was still offline. This meant that customers still had to wait to get their customized quotes. We weren’t happy that the CX was poor because of industry constraints.  For a large part of our supply, we took huge risks and had static pricing. While there could have been potential losses, thanks to our learning algorithms we could revisit these static prices periodically to ensure we minimize exposure. Our focus on “speed as a habit” has helped us come up with quite a few of these hacks and put customer experience at the forefront of all our efforts”

    Pickyourtrail – Competitors

While Pickyourtrail claims that it has no competition in terms of tech or business model, from a customer’s point of view, competition comes right from Thomas Cook, Cox and Kings, MakeMyTrip to even self-bookers.

What differentiates the Pickyourtrail from its competitors is broadly two things:
    a) Itineraries that are executable – There are the host of tech companies trying to solve the trip planning problem. Given they don’t take responsibility for the end experience, the itinerary is not necessarily well thought out. At Pickyourtrail, thanks to the combination of routing, personalization and pricing algorithms – the company is able to own the entire end to end consumer experience and ensure that each and every itinerary is bookable!

    b) Touch + Tech Model – A vacation is an emotional purchase and needs consultative selling given that the average ticket size is around 2.5lakhs. Pickyourtrail uses tech to manage critical components like routing, pricing, etc. Parts of the vacation that need high emotional quotient like choosing cities or visa, we bring in a human touch to ensure the overall experience is seamless. This unique approach has also helped Pickyourtrail win recognition from Google and BCG.

We are extremely cautious as we try and balance the scale and standardization game. We cannot ever put our customer happiness on the back burner. In fact, one of the key levers for our growth is unprecedented leaps in customer delight.

    Pickyourtrail – Growth

    ●    In 2018, Pickyourtrail’s revenue run rate stood at around $9.5 Million
    ●    Number of travelers who picked their trail has grown by ~115% ( 2018-2019 data)
    ●    Peak concurrent traveler stood at 100 people in a day
    ●    Over 300,000 personalized itineraries was created in the first half of 2019
    ●    NPS score of 72 is a testimony of the unrelenting focus on customer happiness.

    ScoutMyTrip – About

It is a road trip planner which conflates human intelligence with artificial intelligence to help plan the perfect road trip for individuals. ScoutMyTrip works for all sorts of outings, from short weekend travels to long excursions.

With artificial intelligence, customers can create an itinerary containing the information necessary for their road trip—gas stations, toilets, restaurants, hotels to stay in, and points of interest. The human intelligence aspect brings in the ability to personalize the information as per one’s needs.

ScoutMyTrip envisions making road trips the preferred means of vacation.

An industry first product has been introduced where a Scout (travel expert for the specific region) is virtually assisting the customer throughout the journey (before and during the trip). The Scouts give you the regional flavor and make one’s holiday joyous. We call this ‘Mark and Embark’! Our team is hard at work in building great tech and striving for customer delight each time.

    ScoutMyTrip – Industry Details

As far as the market is concerned, the road-tripping industry is a subset of a much larger travel domain.

“Our total addressable market is pegged at $6.6B with 33 million leisure road trips in one calendar year. This is growing at a very fast rate and we expect it to double in 3 years time. Globally, this market stands at $100B which is really what we are after; but we want to establish ourselves well in the subcontinent which is why we have started operations in Nepal and Bhutan as well” says Vineet.

    ScoutMyTrip – Founders And Team

Deepak Ananth and Vineet Rajan are the founders of ScoutMyTrip.

Deepak Ananth & Vineet Rajan, ScoutMyTrip Founders
Deepak Ananth & Vineet Rajan, ScoutMyTrip Founders

    Deepak Ananth

Deepak Ananth is the CEO and Co-founder of ScoutMyTrip. He is an Electronics graduate and had been in the corporate space for a really long time, his last assignment being with Verifone as a Director for South-East Asia. Ananth is also known as a storyteller, who loves to travel and sip on fine scotch and old monk. Ananth has a Royal Enfield 500cc bike, and his favorite trip is from Mumbai to Shillong and back.

    Vineet Rajan

Vineet Rajan was the Co-founder and CMO (Chief Marketing Officer) of ScoutMyTrip. Vineet is a Computer Science graduate and has an MBA. Vineet has been involved with various startups throughout his career, and currently works as a Marketing Leader at SAP. After leaving ScoutMyTrip in April 2021 as an Advisor, Rajan joined Shop101 as the Head of Marketing Communications & Organic Growth. Vineet left the Co-founder position of the company in June 2020 and then remained an Advisor for the company before stepping down from that too.

Deepak and Vineet met each other during a road trip organized by a bikers’ club they were part of. They also held official positions in one of the most sought-after Royal Enfield groups. This gave them a chance to collaborate in non-professional capacities. Their thoughts resonated since both wanted to do something unique in the domain of road trips, thus deliberating over possible ideas in 2015.

In terms of workload, Deepak has been responsible for the overall strategy and public relations while Vineet looked into the marketing and sales segment. Soumen Bhowmick serves as the Head of Business Development.

Neeraj Sinha was the CTO and used to manage everything to do with tech. Neeraj Sinha worked at a prestigious company, with excellent remuneration and an experience worth mentioning, but he left all of it just because of his love for travelling, which was fulfilled when he joined ScoutMyTrip after working for around 14 years with the same organisation. Though his father was in the Railways, he had seen the real struggle, as per several interviews, where he stated that his father was left with hardly any money in the middle of the month. This was what drove him away from the government sector jobs, thereby placing him in the private sector. Neeraj started with some odd jobs like that of the EDP Operator but he eventually pursued an MCA degree from IGNOU, and then he never looked back. Sinha soon joined Sopra Steria, then known as Xansa, as a Software Engineer in 2002.

In 2015, we had started talking about putting our collective experience of road tripping so many kilometers into a tech product which can help other travelers. So a ‘road trip’ called ScoutMyTrip began! Building a work drives us – and that is the common area of interest for us. Our team sticks with us; because of the independence we give them in their working style. We measure results; and not the means.

ScoutMyTrip – Startup Story | How It Began?

Both Deepak and Vineet happen to be road trip aficionados. It was this love which inspired them to conceive ScoutMyTrip with a view to guide road-trippers on making the most out of leisurely travels.

We picked this idea because both of us love road trips. Having road tripped on the iconic Royal Enfield bikes in India with over 600,000 kilometers between us; we decided to build a solution that will help people road trip better. Because not everyone will have the knowledge of roads as we would do.

While maps have been the traditional go-to for navigational requirements, ScoutMyTrip is building a new category in road trip planning. The ideation process for ScoutMyTrip started back in late 2015.

ScoutMyTrip has been designed after taking suggestions from men and women consumed by wanderlust (not limited to bikers) and scouts to make the product more customer-centric. The product’s features are the results of the feedback from more than 500 fellow travelers and Scouts. The ScoutMyTrip team carried out a survey involving over 1000 people (including individuals not too inclined towards travelling) to cover every possible scenario. This is imperative given the dynamics of the decision-making process when it comes to travelling. The team also reached out to members of various travel clubs in India. The intimate discussions with these travel communities have been pivotal in onboarding travel experts for helping others.

Some of the first people we spoke to about ScoutMyTrip were all kicked. From investors, the biking community, travel forums and everyone around. We did, however, get a sense that we would have to establish ourselves very quickly; and hence we started seed funded the company in 2016.

Today fromairfare booking to bus booking, we have all arrangements for easy and fastonline booking. One such company that revolutionized the bus travel…

Since the startup emphasized having seasoned travelers help plan trips, it wanted to have the essence of a ‘guide’ in its name. After much consideration, the name ScoutMyTrip was finalized for it captured this essence through ‘Scout’.

    ScoutMyTrip Logo

The Logo shows an inverted magnifying glass and signifies a bird pecking when seen straight (birds usually symbolize freedom). The road in the center is symbolic of travelling. The three colors represent the brand’s values—community, safety and fun.

A lot of thought has gone into the logo. A good friend Kirtee understood our requirements and came up with that effective logo. We still sometimes joke about how much we troubled her for the logo but wherever we go, we get great feedback on the logo and that is always music to the ears of any founder.

ScoutMyTrip – Business Model and Services

ScoutMyTrip is a freemium product. Customer can sign up for free on the website and can plan their road trips using the planner for a lifetime. The planner allows the user to add 25-way points (Google allows you just 10) on their route. It suggests places to stay and eat, gas stations, and things to do—all under one platform.

Customers can choose to pay a premium in case they would like assistance with their planning. They are then assigned Scouts who help not just in building itineraries but also by providing virtual assistance throughout the trip.

ScoutMyTrip from the beginning has followed a very community-centric approach. Be it a community of travelers or that of Scouts. It’s always about the people with technology which revolves around it. Scouts are the key differentiator for us. We’re a marketplace of travel experts who curate the best on the road experiences.

ScoutMyTrip has partnered with travel experts and individuals from different parts of India. These skilled individuals know the local haunts, have adequate knowledge about different places to visit and are the best people to reach out to for a well-planned road trip. ScoutMyTrip – User Acquisition

ScoutMyTrip was launched for insider access or closed beta in October 2016. It got its first 5000 signups in one month and there has been no looking back ever since. ScoutMyTrip had incidentally launched its blog much before the website came into existence. This allowed the company to build communication with its target customers. Through its blogs, the team was able to expound the vision for its product to an eagerly awaiting consumer base.

Content marketing has been a driver for ScoutMyTrip. The company has approximately 90 % of its users coming through social media platforms powered by influencers already a part of the ScoutMyTrip community. Word of mouth publicity also has been a good contributor for ScoutMyTrip with around 10% of user acquisition from this stream.

The majority of spending by ScoutMyTrip in the marketing space are on Facebook and Instagram advertising. A lot more time is vested on SEO and building great content which markets itself.

ScoutMyTrip takes pride in being a content-driven brand and has taken ownership of three intellectual properties to keep in touch with its focus group—the travel enthusiasts.

    • The Great Indian Food Trip: The Great Indian Food Trip is an exploratory drive-by ScoutMyTrip through the hinterlands of India for rediscovering some of the most iconic and largely lost gems of Indian cuisine.
    • The Highest Blogger Meet: The idea here is to take influential bloggers from different walks of life to the highest motorable roads in the world. On those roads, ScoutMyTrip hosts a blogger meet, setting a record in terms of altitude each time. The last successful attempt was at Khardung La in partnership with OYO Rooms.
    • #AageSeRight: A viral sensation on Instagram that is common amongst road trippers. AageSeRight is a Hindi phrase used as a response when asking for directions; ScoutMyTrip was able to create a medium of brand recall through this hashtag.

    ScoutMyTrip – Startup Challenges

Deepak and Vineet had the most modest upbringing, belonging to middle-class Indian families. Deepak had been working in corporate roles (at senior positions in reputed companies) for over 20 years before ScoutMyTrip. Vineet had an entrepreneurial mindset throughout his career but his only brush was by being a member of an established startup. As a result, launching a startup was no less than a challenge due to lack of prior experience as told by Vineet.

Whether such a platform would find a place and apprehensions about them treading the right path plagued the founders in the initial phase.

Our families were very supportive. Parents who heard us out asked the right questions and then wholeheartedly supported us, spouses who stood by us, ready to fight the same battles along with us, helped to make our minds up, much easier.

    ScoutMyTrip – Competitors

As Vineet says, the biggest competitors are the airlines and railways, which make up for over 80% of all travel spends in India. Google Maps is a formidable opponent given its reach and popularity when it comes to navigation.

Globally, ScoutMyTrip faces resistance from Road Trippers and Furkot, which are slowly building their presence in India. Desi competitors include Easy Roads and Highway Delite. However, the highly experienced Scouts associated with ScoutMyTrip are its USP and the major differentiator from its competitors.

We are different in terms of us being a very community driven space where our Scouts are the USP to ScoutMyTrip. We encourage road trips for everyone and plan it keeping in mind the likes of our customers.

The ScoutMyTrip team has christened this plan as ‘Dashboard to Dhabha’, where the idea is to integrate ScoutMyTrip into cars to make it easier for car owners to conceive a journey. They are in discussions with partners to venture into the SE Asian markets and provide a full suite of services not limited to hotels, flights, and last mile connectivity for trips.

Airbnb – About and How it works

Airbnb is nothing but an accommodation marketplace that provides access to over 6 million unique places to stay comfortably and at their leisure in nearly 100,000 cities and 191 countries. Interestingly, Airbnb also offers access to local communities and interests through more than 30,000 activities run by hosts across over 1,000 markets around the world so that you can be a traveler and not just a tourist. It entered India in 2016. Since its inception in India, the company has around 45,000 listings with Goa being it’s a most popular network with 6000 listings.

So all in all, one can safely say that Airbnb is an online marketplace that connects locals who want to rent out their house to immigrants who are looking for accommodations in the local area.

    Airbnb – USP and Innovation

There are quite a few unique selling factors of Airbnb including a combination of factors, but the highlights are primarily the financial ones.

    • The guests who come through Airbnb get good value accommodation with a wide array of price points that the user can choose from. This ranges from a few pounds a night to hundreds and thousands with often such prime locations where a hotel would cost infinitely more than Airbnb accommodations.
    • Airbnb hosts can cash in more on spare space that they have available in their homes. So it’s a win-win for the guests and the hosts and also for the platform, Airbnb.

    Airbnb – Founders and Team

    • Brian Joseph Chesky, CEO – Brian is a very known American technology entrepreneur and also the co-founder and CEO of Airbnb. Chesky was named one of Time’s “100 Most Influential People of 2015”. Chesky attended the Rhode Island School of Design and received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Industrial Design. Post that, Chesky worked as an industrial designer and strategist at 3DID, Inc. in Los Angeles. And then he went on to co-found Airbnb with his fellow co-founders.
    • Joseph Gebbia, CPO – Joseph is one of the finest designers and Internet entrepreneurs around the globe. Joseph has quite a few recognitions on board like he was listed in BusinessWeek’s Top 20 Best Young Tech Entrepreneurs in the year 2009, followed by being named in Inc. Magazine’s Thirty Under Thirty in 2010, and in 2013, he was named in Fortune Magazine’s Forty-under-Forty.
    • Nathan Blecharczyk – Nate is an American billionaire businessman. He is the co-founder and chief strategy officer of Airbnb. Also, he is the chairman of Airbnb China. Nate is a Harvard Graduate and was working as an engineer at OPNET Technologies before co-founding Airbnb.

Airbnb – How did it start?

In case you’re wondering how Airbnb actually started? This is how it did. The Airbnb story is full of determination and adventure. All of it started in 2007 when Airbnb founders Brian Chesky and Joe Gebbia had just moved from New York. They were legit surviving without employment and were having serious trouble paying their rents. So to overcome this situation, they were looking for a way to earn some extra cash. And it’s during this time that the co-founders noticed that all hotel rooms in the city were booked because there were a lot of visitors coming to the local Industrial Design conference.

The young and talented minds saw an opportunity here and following that, they bought a few airbeds and quickly curated and put up a site called “Air Bed and Breakfast.” Their idea was quite basic and it was all about offering visitors a place to sleep and a lush breakfast in the morning. This freshly turned entrepreneur duo charged $80 to the visitors for each night.

And it quite turned out that their idea succeeded and the first Airbnb guests were born. And they were a 30-year-old Indian man, a 35-year-old woman from Boston and a 45-year-old father from Utah sleeping on their floor. And that’s how Airbnb was born.

    Airbnb – Startup Launch

Airbnb started in 2008. But it came to India almost after 8 years of its inception, i.e., in 2016. Soon after Airbnb’s launch in India, it announced a strategic partnership with India’s largest media conglomerate, The Times Group. This association was done in order to expand Airbnb’s operations in the country and build a more channeled and a localized network. It had just been a year after this collaboration that Airbnb launched a travel category called Trips. This was initially available in Delhi and then later expanded to Goa.

In June 108, Airbnb launched ‘Experiences’ in its ‘Trips’ category to offer its travelers the chance to explore unique destinations by providing them with handcrafted activities powered by locals.

“We have offered Experiences in New Delhi and Goa and the product is doing quite well. It grew over sixfold last year, and will continue to grow at a very fast rate,” said Nate.

Airbnb – Business Model and Revenue Model

This is how the business model of Airbnb works. Airbnb is an online marketplace, which lets its users rent out their properties or spare rooms to guests. In this process, Airbnb takes 3% commission of every booking from the hosts, and between 6% to 12% from the guests.

Airbnb offers a plethora of criteria to list for or search property in a particular destination. These criteria range from locating or renting a shared room to a complete house, to having a lavish swimming pool to having basics like TV and washing machines. There are pictures of the property listed on the site, and both the hosts and the guests get a full map listing.

    Airbnb – Competitors

Though the concept is new and recently gained all its popularity, Airbnb still faces tough competition in India. Its main rival in terms of market standing in the country is a homegrown hospital chain namely, Oyo Hotels and Homes. Though both are different in how they run and operate, they still cross paths as both of their end customers are the same. Oyo mainly operates as a full-stack fulfillment-led model where it normally acquires the entire hotels and homes on a franchise-based or leasing model and then goes on to renovate the same. Whereas on the other hand, Airbnb focuses majorly on the homestay accommodations.

    Airbnb – Funding and Investors

Airbnb has received an all-round of $4.4 billion in funding over the years and currently is being valued at $35 billion.

    • In January 2009, in just one year of its inception, Airbnb received $20,000 in venture funding from Y Combinator.
    • The next funding round came in April 2009, when Airbnb raised $600,000 from Sequoia Capital, with renowned participants like Youniversity Ventures partners Jawed Karim, Keith Rabois, and Kevin Hartz.
    • This was followed by funding round in November 2010, where the company raised $7.2 million in Series A funding led by Greylock Partners and Sequoia Capital.
    • Then came the mega funding year, July 2011, when the company went on to raise $112 million in financing round which was led by Andreessen Horowitz. Other investors who participated in this funding round were Digital Sky Technologies, General Catalyst Partners, and A-Grade Investments partners Ashton Kutcher and Guy Oseary.

Kipstay – About & How It Works?

Kipstay operates a collection of homestays within a two – five-hour drive from major urban cities and outfits them with comforts of home, and rents them by night. Kipstay is designed to redefine short vacations. The experience, the location and design of the Kipstay homestays are created in a way that helps guests unplug and detox from the stress of daily life and rejuvenate.

Kipstay converts existing/abandoned housing stock short drive from the city into something more usable for this generation, that’s more responsible for the environment.

Kipstay helps you disconnect and recharge from the daily grind — to be an “off switch” in an “on world.” Technology and work have infiltrated every hour of every day and we need to find a new way to find balance

The getaways can be booked via Kipstay’s website or mobile app. Unlike vacations which can be expensive and far away, Kipstay is affordable (starting at INR 1500/night), far enough to feel disconnected but near enough, so you don’t spend all your time getting there.

    Kipstay – USPs

Urban millennials are overworked and stressed out as technology, jobs and social media fill every waking moment of our lives. 8 out of 10 people want to go on vacations to relax, destress and reconnect with family and friends. But planning vacations take 4 to 7 days per trip, they are expensive (avg. INR 1 to 2 lakhs) and frequency is limited to once a year due to busy lifestyle. The major USP of Kipstay is that it allows one to take that much-needed break without spending a lot and being near cities one can plan short trips frequently.

Also, in India, booking homestays as an alternative to hotels is frustrating on many levels – the experience is unpredictable, no transparency in pricing, inaccurate listing information and photos and trust issues. Kipstay is a solution to these problems.

To enlist, Kipstay has the following USPs –

    For Travellers-

    • Experience – Significantly better and predictable experience for travelers. (Like an Airbnb Plus Home).
    • Affordable – INR 1,500 per night. Kipstay controls the pricing and inventory unlike other marketplaces and OTAs.
    • Accessible – All homes would be in scenic locations 2-5 hrs from urban cities, perfect for short getaways. Unlike Kipstay, many companies do not reveal the exact location unless a booking is made, which is frustrating for a traveler while planning.
    • Differentiated branding with a chic design.
    • Travelers need not choose between an authentic experience or dependable customer service and basic amenities.

    For Homeowners-

    • Ease of converting a regular home to a branded Kipstay Home via the company’s easy to execute playbook.
    • Product features – Kipstay provides branded amenities, marketing and distribution, pricing and inventory management via. a tech backend.
    • Higher occupancy rates (higher than 50%) due to Kipstay brand which directly increases earnings.
    • Kipstay offers a DIFM (Do-It-For-Me) model instead of the DIY model which is time-consuming and expensive.
    • Crossover of Uber (technology back-end, marketing & distribution, operations) and Airbnb (unique inventory with authentic travel experiences).

    Kipstay – Founders & Team

Achintya Dayal and Arjun Raghunandan are the founders of Kipstay. Achintya and Arjun were friends since their school days, and started their first startup Pyxis Networks- an event management company, while they were in the last year of college. After Achintya graduated from Manipal University and Arjun from Ramaiah Institute of Technology they co-founded Kipstay.

Achintya Dayal and Arjun Raghunandan – Co-founders, Kipstay

The founders emphasize on building the right team from the beginning and brought on board great talent to join Kipstay’s core team. Kipstay work culture is centered around people over process.

We push our team to achieve excellence by empowering them with freedom and responsibility. Our goal is to inspire people and trust them to do what they think is best for Kipstay by giving them freedom, power, the information in support of their decisions.

Kipstay – How It All Started?

While all their friends were busy preparing for CAT, GRE and GMAT, Achintya and Arjun decided to travel and attend as many music festivals as we could.

We knew after graduation we would be facing the grind anyway, why not enjoy until then – says Arjun.

During one such festival, it struck them that they could sell some merchandise and make some money as a side hustle, to enhance the festival experience for music festival-goers.

The duo mailed Sunburn ( Asia’s largest music festival held in Pune, Maharashtra, every year) regarding their plan to sell merchandise at the event, and soon they were meeting hundreds of vendors – sourcing, finalizing and shipping merchandise to these festivals and all these was quite interesting!

Honestly, we did not know this was entrepreneurship. The feeling of having earned money even before graduating got us excited about the business.

And this love for entrepreneurship, stayed with Arjun and Achintya. After graduation, Arjun wrote his GRE and was on the final waitlist of acceptance to the University of Maryland, but instead of waiting he took a hard decision of staying back and pursue business.

Arjun started discussing ideas with Achintya, and saw a huge opportunity in the travel industry as he belonged to a family of travel experts. This lead to the launch of Kipstay in 2015.

    • 80% of Indian travelers said they are seeking authentic experiences.

Kipstay – Business & Revenue Model

Kipstay was initially launched as a marketplace to discover and book homestays and additionally, they provided tools (Kiplist) to help owners manage their homes. Later the company pivoted to a network of branded getaway homes model to offer a better customer experience.

In a marketplace model, it was hard for us to handle operations of the homes – like speaking to guests, making sure the amenities are well stocked, no control on pricing and inventory, etc. Hence to deliver a significantly better experience we iterated our model

Kipstay runs on a simple revenue model. It helps homeowners manage their branding, operations such as guest communications and marketing and distribution via their website and app and other third-party channels. For all these services, Kipstay charges a percentage of the total booking it generates.

    Kipstay – User Acquisition

Kipstay was initially launched as a marketplace to discover and book homestays and additionally, they built tools (Kiplist) to help owners manage their homes. The aim was to be the backend engine that would drive business to these properties. However, this model did not turn out to be successful.

Kipstay had 300+ homestays across 30 locations, but the bookings were very low. On speaking to customers and through direct feedback the Kipstay team understood that the users were not looking for cookie-cutter experiences when they booked with them. Travelers were looking for getaways that offered an authentic experience (like an Airbnb offering) and dependable customer service and basic amenities (like a hotel offering). Keeping up with customer expectations, Kipstay – A branded network of homestays was launched.

Kipstay launched its first property in Chikmagalur and it received great response from the customers. In the first week of the launch – they sold 3 months of weekends, winter bookings being made in 4 months in advance.

    Kipstay – Startup Challenges

The most challenging situation that the Kipstay team faced was convincing the homeowners to rebrand their property and letting Kipstay take care of technology and operations while they take care of the hospitality. However, given the profitability that Kipstay offers to the house owners, many house owners soon came forward to join hands with Kipstay.

Evidently, the growth in air passengers would motivate the growth of aircraft, and that eventually bring new innovations and new challenges. While the number of air passengers are increasing, there is still a large segment of air travelers who are not fully aware of the Air Passenger Rights. The Air Passenger Rights were laid down by DGCA (Directorate-General of Civil Aviation) to benefit the travelers but, people are failing take advantage of these rights because of the lack of awareness and technical jargon incorporated in policies as well as the airline manuals.

refundme.in, India’s first-ever flight compensation provider makes people aware of their passenger rights and help them get the compensation they are entitled to get in case of flight disruptions. Akanksha Anshu founded refundme.in in 2016.

    refundme.in – Founders and Team

Akanksha Anshu is the founder of refundme.in.

Founder, Owner of Refundme.in - Akanksha Anshu
    Akanksha Anshufounder of refundme.in.

Akanksha Anshu is a tech-savvy, a visionary, entrepreneur, and founder of 3 successful ventures. She comes from an enterprise technology background, holds an Engineering degree, and has managed various roles so far from IT services to Business Development for the International market.

Through refundme.in she has given suggestions to the government, and the idea and efforts have helped the government to revise the Air Passenger Charter Act. She has been featured by many media platforms such as ETWealth, BW Disrupt, Business Insider, and more for her contribution to the Aviation Industry.

She has expertise in Technology, Marketing, and Automation. She has been mentoring various startups for their IT infrastructure and strategic planning. Besides consultancy, she is a traveler, story-teller, and a motivational speaker. So far, she has been a speaker at various events where she has presented her ideas on distinct topics, from technology to entrepreneur, IT automation, motivation, and web security.

    How was refundme.in Started

Akanksha was once traveling from Delhi To Bengaluru for an important meeting, but few hours before the boarding, she received a message saying, “your flight has been canceled.” Within the limited time, Akanksha could not find any alternate flights; because of a lack of proactiveness and concern for passenger rights from the airline’s side, Akanksha could not attend the meeting. This situation has bothered Akanksha for all the right reasons and has eventually led her to establish refundme.in.

Akanksha has spent a good time abroad and was aware of Air Passenger Rights in countries like the US and UK. She researched to check if any such rights existed in India and found that India did have such rights. To her surprise, Akanksha found that only less than 1% actually receive their flight compensation, and almost more than 1 billion Indian currency was unpaid. Her experience supported by the statistics she came across in her research, she realized that there is a huge gap in the aviation industry concerning public awareness of Air Passenger Rights. With refundme.in she took on the lead to improve awareness among Indians about their Air Passenger Rights.

    refundme.in – Funding

refundme.in is a bootstrapped company and doesn’t have any funding till date (December 2020)

    refundme.in – Startup Challenges

As refundme.in works closely with the dynamic and huge aviation industry, there have been numerous challenges in the way of refundme.in. The challenges faced are,

Decoding Indian Regulation‌‌In the whole process, decoding DGCA air passenger regulation was one of the most challenging parts for the refundme.in. Akanksha took help from legal authorities in understanding the technical jargon associated with the DGCA regulation and evaluating the benefits that the air passenger rights offer.

Lack of Awareness‌‌After decoding, making people aware of was another. refundme.in conducted a survey in India and abroad to get comprehensive data about the awareness of air passenger rights. The findings were shockingly disappointing, which suggested that there is a long way to go to make this world fully aware of their rights. 70 percent of the flyers were not aware of their rights, 17 percent did not think they were eligible for compensation, and 13 percent did not know how to file a claim. Hardly 1% of the total population knows about it, and this number is like a grain of dust in front of the country having the world’s second-largest population. In addition, the DGCA rule ambiguous and complex for an ordinary person to understand.

    refundme.in – Achievements

One of the biggest achievements for the refundme.in team is that they have been successful in positively influencing the DGCA rule and bringing in more accountability and making the Air Passenger Charter Act more accommodative for the passengers.

Earlier, the compensation to air passengers under the DGCA rule was limited to the flight delay, cancellation, overbooking, or denied boarding. In 2018, refundme.in took the initiative and made an appeal to include compensation for baggage delay and baggage lost to the Indian Government. The government has accepted the request and revised Air Passenger Charter Act early this year (2019), and the revised act will be regulated soon.
