    Brian Acton – Involvements/Career

Brian was a system administrator at Rockwell International, before switching to the tech giant, Apple Inc. and Adobe where he was a product tester. He was also associated with Yahoo! as its 44th employee. He worked for over nine years at Yahoo! and unfortunately, lost millions when he had invested in the dotcom boom. The dotcom bubble was a period of excessive speculation in the United States where there was a massive growth of the internet world; it lasted over a decade. After a loss in investments, Brain and Jan took a year off and went to the neighboring continent of South America. Post this vacation, Brian and Jan applied at Facebook, but both were rejected.

Brian Acton as Founder of WhatsApp

The Facebook rejection was disappointing but not enough to deter Brian.  When Jan Koum brought an iPhone in the year 2009, Brian recognized the endless opportunities the App Store had. The duo along with Alex Fishman pondered over an app of theirs. Brian Acton along with Jan Koum announced the coming of WhatsApp by setting up its headquarters in California on the 24thof February, 2009.

Brian sold WhatsApp to the social media giant Facebook in 2014 at a valuation of $22 billion. Life’s a full circle in the end, the company that rejected Brian ended up buying his own venture!

    Brian Acton Story

With success comes great power, and with great power comes great responsibility. A venerated entrepreneur ought to serve the society. This attribute is deeply entrenched in all the successful entrepreneurs we’ve seen till date. Brian lays great emphasis on philanthropy.

In 2014, Brian and his wife Tegan Acton started the Sunlight Giving. This organization provides basic services to the children in  the range of 0-4 years who belong to families with low income. After leaving WhatsApp in 2017, he started another foundation named the Signal Foundation in 2018.

Even after multiple setbacks, Brain didn’t back down. He learned from his mistakes, not repeating them again.

“You never know what’s coming up, just don’t forget to try harder the next day”, advocates Brian.

The fact that Facebook rejected Brian but ended up buying his startup is inspiring. Brian and Koum focused on user satisfaction, denying advertisements on WhatsApp. The Facebook-WhatsApp partnership wasn’t one Brian wished for due to conflict in opinions (Facebook is known for advertisements and the duo of Brian and Koum never supported ads on WhatsApp). A man true to his words, Brian has always placed his consumers over publicity and money. A luminary, Brian Acton has left an indelible mark on the digital space.

Rohan has a point when he makes it simple by saying,

When western classics can find a place in our curriculum, then why don’t our classics.

He argues, Indian literature and culture is so rich that many scholars even having no connection to India have told great of it. They have researched over the years, and translated them for the world.

His Father and in particular his mother is an avid reader, and even she has a personal library. So obviously he hails from reading environment but certain observations drove him to take his passion to an altogether different dimension.

He saw at Harvard that there was not enough contents from India to be included in their curriculum under foreign language segment when Indian literature and culture is far richer than any others.

Thus came the idea of Murty Classical Library of India. Here Indian classics are translated and published by Harvard University Press.

  • Amod Malviya: An Inspiration For Engineers And Technology Enthusiasts

The Indian startup circuit has become synonymous with outstanding developments in recent times. One of the biggest names in this circuit is Flipkart, the e-commerce behemoth that has set a benchmark for various entrepreneurs around the world. Flipkart is one of the most popular online shopping platforms in India. From dresses to grocery items, it covers a huge product catalog.

While Sachin Bansal and Binny Bansal are seen as the face of Flipkart, one more person deserves credit for taking Flipkart to the zenith of success. He is Mr. Amod Malviya, better known as the co-founder of Udaan. For the uninformed, Udaan is a B2B marketplace that attained the unicorn status in just 26 months. Amod’s net worth is about INR 3500 crore, making him one of the richest Indians. This StartupTalky post sheds light on the success story of Amod Malviya.

    Name Amod Malviya
    Age 38
    Citizenship Indian
Education B.Tech from Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur
    Title Co-founder of Udaan
    Net Worth INR 3500 crore

Amod Malviya – An Industry Veteran and Entrepreneur

Technology has become all-pervasive in our lives. Internet is one example that attests to this statement. Our dependence on the internet for various reasons, be it to pass time, gain knowledge, or stay in touch with others, shows that we cannot survive with technology in modern times.

Amod Malviya has made significant contributions to the Indian startup ecosystem by leveraging technology. The prime example would be his stint as the CTO of Flipkart in its early years. From being an engineering manager to becoming the chief technology officer, Amod has played a crucial role in Flipkart’s success.

As the co-founder and engineer at Udaan, an organization that is redefining B2B commerce in India, Amod has only substantiated the wonders of technology. It doesn’t end here. He has also served as the vice president of engineering at ApnaPaisa. Through these involvements, Amod has shown that an individual with technical expertise can make it big as an entrepreneur.

Amod Malviya – Education and Ideology

A graduate of the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, Amod takes keen interest in startups and entrepreneurship. His ideologies revolve around engineers. During a conference, he spoke on an ideology which deemed engineers as differentiators. According to him, the type of code one writes is not a differentiator.

    Success Story of Amod Malviya
    Amod Malviya

While talking about infrastructure, he said that the ability to build scalable architecture was also no longer a unique factor. With the current public cloud ecosystem, one has to be stupid to not create naturally scalable systems. Moreover, the platforms used to create such infrastructures are commoditized.

According to Amod, technology has been commoditized at a rapid pace. If an engineer is identified by a tools, framework, or skillset, then he or she is being commoditized. Engineers go way beyond this identification. The ability to think through scenarios usually seen as impractical and turn them into reality makes engineers a rare breed.

Amod Malviya – Questions that Differentiate Engineers from Code Monkeys

Being an expert in the field of technology, Amod put forth a few questions to developers in a conference. These questions compelled the developers to wonder whether they were creating products that benefit the ecosystem or were they just “coding monkeys”. The questions were:

    • Are you responsible for the success or failure of the product you develop? Are you just an extension arm of someone who directed you to what to do? Do you hold yourself personally accountable? Plethora of companies treat engineers as delivery products.
    • If you are responsible for the development of a product, when was the last time you spoke with your customer? Who in your team speaks to your users? Is it your product development team or you?
    • How much time do you devote to analyze how your customers are using your products? Is there someone else in your team who is doing that and telling you what changes you should make to develop your product?

According to Amod, the answers would help determine whether one was a real entrepreneur or just a code monkey.

Amod Malviya – The Future of Work Lies in Staying Connected with the Real World

Amod has shared some valuable tips for engineers who wish to make a mark in the startup circuit. One such tip is centered on identifying inefficiencies in the world.

Since most engineers are disconnected from the real world and remain lost in imagination, they fail to identify opportunities that call out for a complete transformation. Amod cites this is a reason for the abundance of non-technical entrepreneurs in India. These entrepreneurs keep their eyes and ears open to opportunities others overlook and then headhunt for a technical co-founder to conceive a solution. Engineers need to learn from opportunists and identify problems.

    Success Story of Amod Malviya
The Future of Work according to Amod

Another advice from Amod to budding engineers-entrepreneurs is to be accountable. One should analyze the problem, talk, draw opinions from the users, and continue developing the solution. All of this should be done while owning up to the consequences.

Amod also emphasized on building a tool craft. As an entrepreneur, one should explore the diverse set of tools available in the Indian startup segment. One can start his or her company using these tools. Those with existing ventures can level up through the use of such toolkit.

He also attributes the success of Indian startups to the internet. Distribution is massive in the era of the internet. One should remember that he or she is not the only one who has identified some inefficiency in a product or service. There are several others too. This competitiveness has spurred people to take action and come up with initiatives that create value for the society.

    Udaan

    success story of Amod Malviya
    Udaan

Amod believes that companies need to create the right kind of accountability. According to him, they also need to solve problems for the internal teams by creating in-house tools. Amod gave an overview of one such system currently in use at Udaan. The company measures engineers on their end impact on a business metric; hence, the management doesn’t shed excessive spotlight on delivery as the engineers are given that choice and flexibility.

Amod Malviya – An Inspiration for Many

Amod Malviya is a role model for millions of people, particularly engineers. While Udaan, the company he co-founded, continues to make giant strides, it is being ensured that the engineers employed by the organization are given complete freedom to develop and implement their ideas. Amod has proved that success is inevitable when knowledge and intelligence are implemented in the right manner.

In his journey to fame, Alok took up a range of small projects like bank referrals, locating leak-proof drums, and financial services for the needy. According to him, this helps in understanding business.

He often associates curiosity with growth. He urges all aspiring entrepreneurs to develop curiosity as a serious habit. This inquisitiveness helped him diagnose a fault in a costly sock-making machine. It was his curiosity that inspired him to use the internet as the foundation for his startup.

He also advises entrepreneurs to commit at least ten years to scale their business. He believes the journey of pain, trouble, and hard work eventually lead to success. For Alok, there is no ‘easy money’ in this world; if anything comes easy, it slips out of your hand even easier. Alok sought tips from the deep research practices and long-term investing habits of successful traders.

He refrains from companies fostering deceit, cheating or manipulation. Being honest has taken him to places and he encourages budding entrepreneurs to do the same.

    Investors

For Alok, VC can mean venture capital, vulture capital, and vampire capital. Entreprenuers should exercise caution in choosing their investors. His company had to weather some challenges due to a dysfunctional board. The silver lining in the cloud was Disney. It came forward with an all-cash acquisition deal. Further developments lead to the dominance of Games2win and the rest is history.

It is impossible to imagine a day without texting our friends and followers through WhatsApp, posting images on Instagram, and scrolling through memes on Facebook. Something’s missing here? Yeah, it’s Snap (Snapchat). The emergence of Snap as a social media giant goes to Evan Spiegel.

Posting pictures with creative filters has provided a boost to Snap, frequently appearing in the ‘top grossing list’ of Android and iOS apps. Snapchat is like a blessing to the startup circuit. Time to find out how Evan Spiegel brought Snap Inc. into the picture and changed the social media industry forever.

    Quick Facts

    Name Evan Thomas Spiegel
Born 4th June 1990 – Los Angeles, California
    Age 30
Education Crossroads School for Arts and Sciences, Standford University
    Occupation Entrepreneur
Known for Co-founder and CEO of Snap Inc.
Net worth US$4 billion (April 2020)

    Who Is Evan Spiegel?

A co-founder of Snap Inc., formerly known as Snapchat Inc., Evan Spiegel is one of the most successful entrepreneurs of today’s times. He created Snap Inc. along with Bobby Murphy and Reggie Brown, his college mates. The trio were the students of Stanford University. He enrolled at the Crossroads Schools for Arts and Sciences, and later on secured a seat at Stanford. He had an unpaid internship at Red Bull and was a paid intern for a biomedical company. He is amongst the three self-made billionaires in the world who are under 30 years of age. Evan Spiegel’s innovation permits approximately 203 million people to send photos and videos through Snap.

    The Tale Behind Snap Inc.

In college, Spiegel proposed an application with ephemeral messaging for a class project that wasn’t received well by his classmates. Every noteworthy story is riddled with setbacks followed by rise to fame, and Spiegel’s story was no different. He worked with Bobby Murphy and Reggie Brown to launch a prototype called ‘Picaboo’ into the social media segment. Picaboo was rechristened to Snapchat. The popularity of Snapchat and increasing user acceptance compelled Spiegel to leave Stanford University and focus only on Snapchat’s development. The number of daily active users crossed the 1 million mark unexpectedly quick.

    Evan Spiegel Net Worth

Evan Spiegel’s net worth is $2.1 billion as of 16th March,2020. He owns around 18 percent of the company. Evan Spiegel was named as the youngest billionaire in the world in 2015. In 2017, Spiegel and his co-worker Murphy pledged to donate 13,000,000 shares of Class A common stock over to arts and youth non-profit.

    Ups And Downs

With the steep increase in Snapchat’s revenue and popularity, nothing seemed impossible for the company. In 2016, the company rebranded itself as Snap Inc. and introduced the concept of camera-equipped spectacles. This further boosted revenue as Snap Inc. earned more than $400 million in 2016.

Snap Inc. faced challenges. After going public in 2017, the company failed to meet the public’s expectations, causing the stock price to fall in March 2017. The stock was below $12 per share by August. This was mainly due to stiff competition from Facebook. The mega-giant has its own success story, but has been accused of plagiarizing ideas and concepts of various social media companies. Snap Inc. was also a victim of plagiarism which lead to algorithmic filtering of content and several other improvements, bringing in new customers.

    Avoiding Facebook-zone

After scaling new heights, Spiegel received an offer from Facebook. CEO Mark Zuckerberg offered to buy Snapchat for $3 billion. Spiegel, a visionary entrepreneur, refused to sell his venture even though he and his co-workers were to net around $750 million from the Facebook deal. Evan Spiegal never seeked short term gains, a big win mattered to him the most.

    Rift Between The Co-founders

Snapchat was now a big shot. In order to have his share of the pie, Reggie Brown filed a lawsuit on the grounds that his idea was being used by Spiegel and Murphy for developing Snap. Brown argued he wasn’t provided the intellectual property rights of the company even though the iconic ghost logo was his creation. In 2014, Reggie Brown received a settlement of $157.5 million.

    Spiegel’s Global Influence

The social media industry owes to Spiegel. His efforts to connect people all over the world have made him a popular household name. Even though he was offered to sell Snap Inc. to Facebook, he refused. Short term investments never enticed him. This is a lesson for budding entrepreneurs! Even though Snapchat’s idea was later on copied by Facebook, it found out other ways to attract customers. In the present era, it is never easy to sustain momentum as a social media application, but Snap Inc. did it by being unique. Having more than 1 million daily users from around the globe consistently is a testimony to Snap Inc.’s position as a heavyweight. This in turn has cemented Evan Spiegel’s place in history.

    1. Tell us about yourself, your professional background and how you got to where you are today. What keeps you motivated at whatever you do?

My name is Shankar Krishnamoorthy.  I am a co-founder and CEO of Synergita Software.  Gowri Subramanian and Bhoo Thirumalai are the other two co-founders of this company.  We have also co-founded another company, Aspire Systems prior to Synergita.  Aspire is a software services company which has global customers and rated as great place to work for the past 10 years consecutively.

My professional background is a mechanical and CAD/CAM engineer.  Gained good software development experience during the early phase of my career; built several software products for our customers at Aspire.  Our experience in building software products for our customers & instilling best people practices paved way for Synergita.  With Synergita, we are able to help several of our customers incorporate best practices and help them create peopleMAGIC in their organizations.  Seeing their success and opportunity to help them through our product really motivates us in whatever we are doing.  Plus, opportunity to build a great product company.

    2. What are your job responsibilities and how they have changed over time?

I am responsible for driving Synergita business and making it a leader in our space.  We currently have about 200K+ users across 100 customers.  We are managing about 2.2M+ goals and competencies for our users on our platform.  So, product is evolving and growing.  5 years back, when we started Synergita, it was a small team – each of us were doing everything whatever we can do.  Now, the team has evolved into multiple streams.  Product management, engineering, implementation, support, customer success, sales, marketing, etc.  Each team is driven by a leader who brings in lot of rigor and passion.

    3. Tell us about Synergita

We have customers in India, Singapore and the US.  Some of our customers are Capita, Indegene, Brakes India, Lucas TVS, Vedanta Resources, Future Group, Yokogawa, NTUC Learning Hub, American Micro, etc.

    4. What are your plan for the company in 2020?

Our Northstar is “creating peopleMAGIC” for our customers through employee best practices on performance, engagement and development.  We are constantly enhancing our product with newer capabilities along these lines.  This year, we have OKR, deeper employee engagement capabilities in our plan.

We have recently moved to a nice, new open office @ Navalur, Chennai.  https://blog.synergita.com/2020/01/happy-new-start-at-new-location-synergita/)This will help us in better collaboration among our team.

From the customer base front, we are investing on the US geography to get more customers there.  We have local sales presence in Chicago and we are hoping that these investments would produce results in 2020 for us and get new customers, increase customer satisfaction, etc.

    5. How do you see the Automated HR processes market growing in India?

It is fast growing.  Organizations are investing in digital transformation to increase employee productivity.  If employees get good care from their company/managers in terms of setting expectations, guiding in their work, their performance will be better.  So, it helps both employee and the organization.  That is what Synergita is doing.

Plus, there are lot of expectations from employees in using better HRTech products for their day-to-day worklife.  People are expecting the same sophistication that your Gmail and Facebook provide in their work as well.

    6. Do you think Employee Engagement & Performance software is a must for every organization?

Yes.  It is a must.  Employees are critical for any organizations’ success and growth.  Lot of organizations put “Employees First” philosophy.  Happy and engaged employees will take care of the customers and hence the business.  If you want to do these, you need a good software which helps in performance and engagement…automates the process, proactively help all the employees in their work, etc.  So, it is a must in our opinion.

On a lighter note, no point in doing performance appraisals manually anymore.  Major frustration for HR is the amount of time it requires to do one appraisal and they are not able to focus on strategic activities.  It is high time they transform their performance management with Synergita.

    7. Mention Struggles/Challenges faced in your professional/ startup life and how did you overcome it?

    Synergita Team
    Synergita Team

In a startup life, there will always be bandwidth challenges in all angles – be it funding, engineering bandwidth, marketing, sales.  There will be conflicting priorities, lot of things to do in a short time.  You just have to prioritize to meet these challenges and move forward.  Perseverence is the key.  In case of Synergita, we have been fortunate to have a great set of team with us.  Driven and capable team.

    8. Which online tools/ services/ apps do you use the most and would like to recommend as well?

We are a cloud company.  We deliver Synergita as software as a service for our customers.  We use cloud tools for our own requirements such as Freshdesk for customer support, Leadsquared for marketing automation, Amazon AWS for our cloud, Knowlarity for telephony, WordPress for our content blog, Office365 for our email and team collaboration, Zoom for web conference, etc.

    9. Where are your long term and short term goals? What are you doing to achieve that? It is sufficient?

We want to make Synergita a leader in talent management space.  This space is evolving and there are plenty of opportunities in this space.  Every functionality – performance, engagement, development, OKR, compensation, recruitment, etc. are enticing.  With artificial intelligence capabilities, we can do so many things.  We need to do this meaningfully and bring in business sense to grow the product.

As a startup, we are currently focusing primarily on one year goals for us and work hard to reach these goals.  These goals include customer acquisition, product capabilities, funding, etc.  For 2020, we have set 300K as number of users on our platform; add OKR and Employee engagement as product roadmap priorities; focus more on customer success.

Whatever we are doing is not sufficient.  So much to do and so little time and resources 😊.

  • Mr Sainath Maharatta – Founder of StrongHumanNetwork | StartupTalker

StartupTalky is one of the strongest community in India and we have a lot of professionals who are doing great in their lives. To share their learnings and inspire as many people as we can, we are interviewing all the StartupTalkers in our “Know the StartupTalker” series.

Today, we have Mr Sainath Maharatta as our interviewee. Sainath Maharatta is the founder of StrongHumanNetwork. You will learn a lot from this story of Sainath Maharatta in his own words.

    Who Are You?

I am a millennial kid born in 1990 in Hyderabad. My schooling and college and 1st 2 years of my professional experience have been in and around Hyderabad. I have graduated in computer science. I was preparing to pursue MBA since my college days. Later I worked with an IT company and then became a probationary officer in state bank group. While I was working as a probationary officer in the state bank, I got admission into IIM Calcutta.

At IIM Calcutta, I was very active in campus activities through quiz club, marketing club and hostel activities which helped me sharpen my leadership skills.

I Interned in a sales & marketing role in a Startup and FMCG environment in Mumbai. Later I was hired as a manager reporting to the founding team at stayzilla.com ( which was a direct competitor to OYO while I was working). After a year stint at stayzilla, I moved to Hyderabad in a sales role at Paytm.

I was responsible for building the distribution network of Paytm in AP and Telangana upcountry and was at the helm of things during demonetization. I got an opportunity to see and work on things on the ground during demonetisation. I saw how the whole country, administration and private sector players like Paytm were mobilized and worked during this time which gave me a hope that anything can be changed if we know how to do it.

How did you come up with the name of your Startup?

I was working with a lot of youngsters during this time and was very successful in my work. During this time I went through a deep introspection phase where I recognised the core qualities in me which were making me successful across all the aspects of my life. One day I wrote all these qualities on a board – confidence, self-awareness, fair world exposure, willingness to work on myself, chasing excellence. When I thought of an adjective which I would like to identify with, “Strong” came to my mind. That was a key moment in my life where I discovered the StrongHuman Framework.

What did you do just after getting the idea?

During my discussions with friends, I found that this framework can be a universal formula which can help anyone to improve their lives. Also because of my business and startup background, I could see that a profitable organisation can be built around this concept and hence StrongHumanNetwork was born.

In the last 2 years, we have taken SHN’s concept to thousands of people across the globe and it was received with open arms and warmth across. People were inspired by this idea and a lot of people invested in this idea. Till date, people have invested more than 60 lakhs (Excluding my investment) into this project.

As we are a sustainable profitable organisation, our main aim from the inception was to find out the right product-market fit. During this process, we did a lot of product-market trails through an offline sales team-driven model, college workshop, corporate training models and finally found our product-market fit through the digital lifestyle membership model executed through a 5-level structure which is open for individuals across the globe.

As of now, we have 100 paid members spread across the globe who come from very highly acclaimed educational & professional backgrounds. Most of our members have a Postgraduate degree from reputed colleges and have management experience. Many of them are located in countries like USA and Australia apart from India. We are currently offering lifestyle memberships to select professionals, senior professionals, Life coaches and world-renowned leadership experts at Level 3,4 & 5.

To become a lifestyle member, one has to accomplish the StrongHuman Challenge – a 21 day paid self-awareness challenge.

One can register themselves on www.shn.life in the suitable category, we will review their profile and if they are eligible they would be invited to take the StrongHuman Challenge.

What is Your Typical Day Like?

I generally start my day with meditation, walk in nature followed by listening to Carnatic music. Then I read the regular newspaper and economic times to stay up to date with current happenings. My work starts with talking to highly accomplished individuals through networks like LinkedIn where I bounce ideas and perspectives and identify the right individuals to join SHN.

As an entrepreneur, I deal with uncertainty on a day to day basis and I need to be aware of the situation and not let the situation control me. Whenever I feel overpowered by situations, I go to meditation or listen to inspiring talks by Sadhguru, J Krishnamurthi, Tom Bilyeu, Gary Vaynerchuk etc.

What are your job responsibilities and how they have changed over time?

Post-MBA, my primary job has been problem-solving through planning, execution and people management. Before my startup journey, I was solving problems in a controlled environment of the company. Now as a startup, it is like transitioning from a man-made park into a forest – the real world. Now I solve things in the real world. When you are facing the real-world you need much more awareness to understand the situation and do the right thing.

In a corporate environment, you have a certain power which comes through the position you are placed in the organisation and you need to act according to that and people’s behaviour is also shaped by your position of power.

As an entrepreneur in real-world, your designation has no values unless backed by legible, constructive behaviour and results. Everyone around you behaves the way they want and it is your job to carefully analyse people and situations and do your best.

A startup goes through different phases, such as zero to one phase, 1 to 10 phase, 10 to 100 phase and so on. You need a different skillset at each level. Zero to 1 phase is the toughest which builds you as a person and lays the foundation. 9/10 entrepreneurs don’t make beyond this phase due to multiple reasons, but a major reason is a lack of adequate self-awareness and awareness of people and the world around. Some times you learn it the hard way and luck also plays a role in this journey.

Any Struggle/Challenges you have faced in your professional/ startup life and how did you overcome it?

When we were at the inception stage of SHN, I tried to move as fast as possible with the given resources and people. Also, I believed that you can motivate anyone to be the best version. Later I came across situations which made me understand that there needs to be an innate willingness from the person, without which nothing can be done. Some times when someone has already come to certain conclusions, things won’t move despite your best efforts and intentions.

I understood that team building needs a lot of judgement and forming the right team is also a time taking process as we have to nurture the relationships and trust.

Self-awareness is my superpower. Over the last 2 years, this has improved more. I can see situations just the way they are and this gives me an immense power to handle it the way I want to.

World-exposure is also a big strength. I love to read and consume content from very different subjects starting from business, international & national politics, spirituality, history, artificial intelligence and other technologies. This helps me in connecting the dots – a very important skill in the current situation.

Another important skill I have is problem-solving. I can analyse any kind of problem and can say what kind of solution is required and come up with probable ways to solve it.

Which online tools/ services/ apps do you use the most and would like to recommend as well?

YouTube & LinkedIn are 2 of the most important tools I would recommend. YouTube has a lot of thought-provoking content which can blow your mind. You need to tap into the right channels. LinkedIn is a very important tool for anyone who wants to grow professionally. It allows you to participate in sensible, thought to provoke discussions and develop the right professional network,

Who or what has shaped who you are?

If I have to speak of personalities who inspired me and keep inspiring me, I would say as a child, APJ Abdul kalam inspired me a lot. His book “Wings of Fire” was the 1st book where I learned about leadership. Also a lot of contemporary personalities who have worked through the tough times to success such as our PM Modi, K Chandrashekar Rao, who lead a long Telangana movement to become the current CM of Telangana inspire me.

  • Interviewing Mr. Abhishek Singh, Marketing Head @ VakilSearch | StartupTalker

StartupTalky is one of the largest and the active communities connecting startup ecosystem across the globe. StartupTalker is one such section on our platform where we interview professionals from our community and to learn from their experience.

Today, we are interviewing Mr, Abhishek Singh, Marketing head @VakilSearch, one of the biggest legal service provider in India. This is the story of this marketing hero in his own words.

Abhishek, give us a brief on your academics and professional journey.

To talk a little about my academics and initial years, I completed an MBA in Marketing from Bangalore University. I’ve spent the last 12 yrs working with media industry very closely. I spent my first few years with some of India’s best startups like Via.com, CommonFloor.com etc. I specialize in media planning, buying, advertising, marketing automation, growth hacks, team building etc.

I was one of the few initial hires at CommonFloor who was instrumental in taking the brand from 30 to 1200+ employees. During this period I was responsible for end to end marketing initiatives at Commonfloor from the brand launch to digital campaign to first TVC etc. in the year 2012 to 2015.

How does your Normal Day looks like?

I typically start my day with meditation. To me reaching office early is a must. After which the first thing I do is analyse the previous day’s numbers such as Marketing spends, website traffic numbers, lead numbers etc. This is one of the vital habits I follow day in and day out. Based on the analysis, I call my team and plan the day to ensure the smooth functioning of the marketing activities. Of course, as a Marketing Head, I attend meetings and discussions spread across different sections of the day.

What do you think has made you a good marketer?

Reading books and watching Cricket have always been a few of my favourite hobbies. Growing up, I was always intrigued by advertisements and how a product was marketed. Therefore, I took a keen interest in learning and developing it.

While I was doing my Masters in MBA, many of my classmates were preparing to get into sales. Personally, I felt I had a calling for Marketing, though I knew it may not be as illustrious as a career in sales. However, I had a thirst for it and was eager to add value to marketing right from the beginning.

Some of my noteworthy accomplishments in Marketing were, PKHD – Property Ki Home Delivery which was ideated on the concept of, “If Pizza can be delivered at home, well, why not property?” This campaign garnered the Most Innovative award in the Real Estate sector at the First Time Multiple Marketing Forum.

In 2019, I ideated the iAdvocate campaign, on the tagline Voice out B’cause. “iAdvocate”, was a CSR initiative, which allowed people to champion against causes that they were passionate about such as violence, sexual harassment, human trafficking, honour killing etc, just to name a few. The public was given a chance to voice out for a cause on their social media platform. The cause that secured the highest number of votes was supported through this initiative. “Women empowerment” garnered the highest support. As a result, Vakilsearch partnered with a Women’s NGO in Chennai and gave away day-to-day essentials and infrastructural supplies to 105 girl children living in the home.

What do you think about the current scenario of marketing as a career?

Absolutely! Marketing is a creative-driven career. Though Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning are slowly replacing a lot of people and their jobs, when it comes to Marketing, a machine cannot match a human’s creativity. Having said that, different tools such as automation etc. can make the working better & easier but it cannot replace a good marketer.

Do you think one needs a degree to become a good marketer?

To be a good marketer you don’t necessarily need a degree. However, what a Marketing degree can do is, it could definitely complement and give the person an edge over the others.

    What have you failed at?

Downs have been plenty. However, as a result, I am what I am today because of my setbacks. Some of my early lessons as Marketing leader was to start taking decisions no matter good or bad and stand for it. Being answerable is vital no matter what.

Challenges & Struggles: Vakilsearch being the most disruptive company in the legal-tech sector is aiming to do something which hasn’t been done so far. We are registering close to 10% of companies and 3% of Trademark month-on-month in India. So, the challenge is rather big, because, in order to scale up to 12% or 15 % and 5%  to 7% of Company Registrations and Trademark registrations respectively in India is an uphill task.

However, what others see as a challenge we see as an opportunity. The legal sector is also heavily dependent on offline while we are trying to make this market online. Nevertheless, we see this happening as a collective effort of the industry itself. And that’s where Vakilsearch comes in. We educate people and make them understand that what you do offline often through laborious processes, could easily be done online with a lot more transparency, better pricing and amazing customer experience. So, I term this as an opportunity, though it is a big challenge that is standing in front of us in 2020.

    What are your Superpowers?

I respect values a lot. I like being answerable and therefore I always deliver. I am also very disciplined in my approach. That makes me stand apart. Most importantly, I carry values. I also believe in this saying, “Don’t say what you cannot sell. Say what you sell. There should be humility in your approach which I always try and embody.

What are some tools and Gadgets that make you feel like the Doraemon of the Marketing world?

There are multiple tools that I use for Marketing that makes me feel like the Doraemon of the Marketing world. To name a few, Automation tools such as Hubspot, Gamooga, Marketing tools such as SEMRUSH, Google Analytics, GTM, APPS FLYERS, Meltwater etc.

Who has a significant influence on you professionally?

My Eldest brother who is a Marine Engineer had a significant influence on my life. His discipline and hardworking nature had an impact on my career. I learned how to be fearless and kind from him. I also admired Swami Vivekananda and learned from his life and his teachings.

What are some hacks you have learned in the Marketing world?

The life of a marketer is a mix of product marketing and Technology. The moment we learn how to stitch both together, we can devise a lot of hacks at every point. These hacks could be growth hacks, traffic hacks or even attention-seeking hacks. However, when we talk about hacks there are no shortcuts as such. When we learn to analyse the data, it will give us a lot of insight on where to improve and how to cash it.

    What’s your workspace setup like?

    Abhishek Singh's workspace
    Discussion@VakilSearch

How do you recharge or take a break?

While talking to my team I recharge myself. The more I recharge them, the more it recharges me. In a way planning, inspiring my team helps me grow.

What’s the most inspiring quote for you?

    Be fearless yet polite.

What are some marketing blogs and books you would recommend someone to read?

I would definitely recommend every marketer to read Hacking Growth by Sean Ellis and Morgan Brown and Subscription Marketing by Janzer.

If you get a chance to start your marketing career again what would you do differently this time?

In case I start my career again I will give more emphasis on learning and making use of the available tools to solve problems on my own.

  • Sahil Dev: How I Designed My Own World | Know the StartupTalker

StartupTalky is one of the strongest community in India and we have a lot of professionals who are doing great in their lives. To share their learnings and inspire as many people as we can, we are interviewing all the StartupTalkers in our “Know the StartupTalker” series.

Today, we have Sahil Dev as our interviewee. Sahil is an amazing designer who can beat the biggest of the industry with his talent. This is the whole story of this creative man in his own words.

    Who is Sahil Dev?

I completed my primary education from Akbedkarngar, a very small district near Faizabad. I was good at studies, scored decent marks in 10th & 12th (Uttar Pradesh Board). I used to do draw and I was good at it but in the 10th standard, I chose Sanskrit over Arts and in the 12th standard,  I chose Mathematics over Biology. So, the only option was left for me at that time was engineering. Back then, I did not know design due to a lack of resources. I cleared JEE and joined IIT-BHU for Mechanical Dual Degree (5-year course). In 12th standard, I developed a great interest in Mathematics and Physics but after spending 2 years in IIT-BHU, I started losing my interest. I tried learning Photoshop during my 3rd year in college & designed a few posters for college events but I was never part of the design team (Film & Media Club). I had never thought about designing as a career option before the final year of engineering. I didn’t sit for campus recruitment and also didn’t prepare for the PSU’s and government exams because I was confused about my career choice.

Due to all these, my M.Tech project got extended for 6 months. During that period, I came to know about CEED (2016) and applied for it. I secured a rank but it wasn’t good enough to get a seat for visual communication in IIT-Bombay. During this time I started doing some personal & paid freelance projects which were related to logo and branding design but as mentioned I didn’t get a call from IIT-Bombay. Because of family pressure, I came to Delhi for the preparation of IES & GATE 2017. I decided that I won’t design anymore but the love for design kept growing. Just before GATE 2017 (5th February), I decided not to sit for it. Within a month, I joined ScrollDroll as a Senior Visual Designer and then Crownstack as UI/UX Designer. After working for 7-8 months, I switched to full-time freelancing. Recently, I joined Guerrillas as the Creative Head & I also do some freelance projects in my free time.

How does your Normal Day looks like?

To be honest, I don’t follow any routine. I might end up doing stuff at very unexpected timings, such as watching a movie at  9-10 am or sleeping in the afternoon and working late at night around 3-4 am.

    What are your job responsibilities?

There are two sides of my work: Business Side & Personal Side.

Business side involves all kind of business projects which I take such as branding, UI-UX & advertising but the personal projects involve taking up social issues & problems in a creative & thought-provoking way.

    What have you failed at?

I applied for CEED 2016 but didn’t secure a good rank. I had to make a choice at that time and I came to Delhi for IES/GATE preparation. I come from a middle-class family of a small town where government jobs are given prime importance. So, later when I switched to designing, the most difficult task to convince my parents & family for the same.

Also, if people might want to consider it a failure, I got two backlogs in the 2nd year & 6 months extension during my M.Tech project.

What are some tools and gadgets you use?

Mostly, I use Adobe Illustrator for branding & minimal posters, Adobe Photoshop for mockups & advertising and, Figma for UI/UX. I would like to recommend Figma to all people who are a little bit interested in design because it’s a great tool for UI/UX and also it’s completely free.

It’s my father who shaped me to an extent. He is a simple and honest man and that’s all I want to be, a good designer and a better human. There are other great people with whom I am connected and all of them make some impact on my life & work.

What are some hacks you have learned in the Designing world?

When we start something new, most of us don’t know where to start from. It happens in the design field as well. For any great creation it is not necessary to develop the idea from scratch. You can also pick any existing idea and enhance it with your own creative knowledge and it will be yours.

How do you validate your design?

Whenever I work on a new logo project, I always validate my designs via:

    • Cross-check with the help of keywords
    • Google & Bing reverse image search
    • TinEye reverse image search

    Meanwhile big companies.
