    Notebook – About

Notebook is an edtech startup based out of Kolkata. It provides educational audio-visual content based on every topic in the school curriculum, as a teaching aid.

Notebook is guided by the following core beliefs:

    • Every child is talented and equally capable.
    • Society will improve as a whole if only every child can be provided with access to high-quality education.
    • At the end of the day, all learning is self-learning. If content can inspire curiosity, it would have served its purpose.
    • Creativity inspires more creativity.

Beyond its commercial presence, Notebook exists to empower positive social change. Its vernacular feature allows children to learn their syllabus in their regional languages. The videos include instructor-led components as well as graphic visualization elements to reinforce storytelling. Hand-drawn illustrations, soothing music, and well-thought-out creative design augment the Storytelling and enhance understanding and retention of topics.

Notebook company is also engaged in dialogue with the Education departments of various countries, to digitize education in these countries. There are on-going discussions with the governments in South Asia and GCC regions, and some other countries where the government is trying to serve different issues in their traditional education system through the distribution of digital content.

    Products

The product is a self-learning environment. In its current shape and form, it provides videos and textual content that explain topics from school syllabi. Notebook has started with CBSE and will be adding more boards soon. It is available on the web, Android app, and iOS app.

Through its products Notebook company aims to bring out the curiosity among students and engage them. As in class holding the students’ attention for a long time is a challenge for the teachers, Notebook has attempted to create the audio-visuals in such a way that seems interesting to the students. Currently the course available in Notebook is English for CBSE 8th, 9th and 10th standard. Study Notes and Solved Questions are also included in the course.

The platform also employs Machine Learning to offer personalized learning pathways to the students. The back end will keep learning through usage patterns and use them in the future to recommend content to students based on individual learning needs.

    Notebook – Startup Story

It was over the course of a discussion that we realized that an ‘Over The Top (OTT)’ approach in education was possible.

In March 2017, Achin was visiting Subhayu in Delhi. They were having a general discussion on the various social evils present in society and how these evils can be eradicated through education. Subhayu was working in the Sports content space and was witnessing the OTT phenomenon. Soon the idea stuck in their mind that they can make education easily available through the OTT approach.

After this, Subhayu and Achin spent a year traveling across India and abroad – visiting students, teachers, universities, academicians across various places and different strata of the society to identify the pain points.

In March 2018, they started developing content, which they kept sharing with teachers and students at every step for feedback. They gave leaflets to schools, actively courting criticism!

Both Subhayu and I have spent years in the Corporate world. Managing time effectively is second nature to us. We spend time and effort in finding the right people. Once we do, we empower them, trust them and watch as they take the lead on things. – Achin Bhattacharyya, CEO of Notebook

Looking to start your business while being a student. Check out some business ideas for students which do not require any investments.

When we started out, we had a few names on the board to choose from. Given that we needed to be attractive to school students, we were thinking of names that were fun, tech-oriented, used intelligent wordplay. – Achin Bhattacharyya, CEO of Notebook

Finally, Achin and Shubhayu came up with the name ‘Notebook’. It was simple, direct and known. Even in logo and colours, the company kept things the same way – simple and direct. The choice of the Golden yellow colour stood for excellence and it is also believed to be Goddess Saraswati’s colour.

Notebook – Business and Revenue Model

Notebook is a subscription-based service operating on a Freemium model. It is India’s first after-school digital learning portal. Schools get access to concise and engaging high-quality audio-visual teaching aids for classrooms, and students get individual personalised access to the same content on their personal devices so that they can study at their convenience. Since its commercial launch in September 2019, the Notebook app has been downloaded and used by more than 90,000 students from across India, and several schools have already started implementing Notebook videos in their classrooms.

The company believes that its content quality is its greatest marketing asset. As such Notebook is offering part of the content for free.

According to Achin and Suvayu, Notebook’s USP is the content and pricing strategy. The content design has been consciously done in a way that engages the student.

We have devised an augmented storytelling technique that invites the student to imagine along with the video, and this shows great results in understanding and retention. – Achin Bhattacharyya, CEO of Notebook

Notebook is available at a price of Rs 1,999 for all subjects for a month and Rs 9,999 for an annual subscription with unlimited access.

Achin and Suvayu felt the necessity for the product to be made affordable to the average Indian parent, and this is what they have modeled into Notebook’s subscription.

    Notebook – Funding

Notebook is currently bootstrapped startup. It has not received any funding yet.

    Notebook – Growth

Notebook has served over 2.3 million users as of November 2021. It had over 300,000 users before the lockdown and increased to 2.32 million in 2021.

    Notebook – Challenges

The greatest challenge faced was establishing a balance between content and pedagogy. The content had to be comprehensive and yet crisp. The pedagogy had to be engaging without distracting. So there were quite a few balances to strike.

Creating high-quality content ensuring that the students find it engaging and also which is easily memorable was a challenging task. However, Achin and Subhayu actively discussed the issues, expectations, and requirements with the teachers and students across the country. On the basis of the feedback received, Notebook was able to come up with an easily comprehensible and memorable design for the content.

Support from family and friends is the highest asset during challenging times.

Both of us have been fortunate that our family and friends have believed in us right from the get-go. Every person we told about our decision felt that we were doing the right thing. It has been immensely encouraging to have so many people put their faith in us. –  – Achin Bhattacharyya, CEO of Notebook

    Notebook – Competitors

There are quite a few companies that are registered as Ed-tech with the ROC. However, very few are known and regularly used by students. Byju’s has done an outstanding job in Maths and Science, and in building a self-learning habit. Others like Meritnation and Toppr have been around for a while, and have their own content philosophies. They believe that the true competition is with rated content, pirated videos, and other distractions that students today has access to.

    Notebook – Work Culture

I believe that the best way to treat any employee is to not treat him or her as an employee.  – Achin Bhattacharyya, CEO of Notebook

The Notebook team is like a close-knit family where the team members continuously help and support each other. Notebook has provided accommodation facility to its team members who are from outside Kolkata. This is a caring gesture and it has helped to improve the work efficiency of the team members.

    Notebook – Awards

Notebook bagged the awards for the Best Website and the Best App at the World Digital Marketing Congress – two awards in 2020 at The Taj Lands’ End, Mumbai.

On winning the awards, Achin Bhattacharyya, CEO, and Founder of Notebook said, “From its very inception, Notebook has been driven by a vision to help students learn. The content design, product development, research, and technology have all stemmed from this core value. It is immensely encouraging for the whole team, and me personally, to be recognised by such an eminent forum for our efforts. India has seen a mushrooming of Edtech products in recent times, and many of them believe in aggressive overselling. We, however, have always believed in the quality of our content and the intuitive nature of our product and this has been such a wonderful validation of that approach. Our App and Website are both embodiments of the essential values that Notebook embodies – respect for every individual, inclusion in all our actions and immense pride in the work we do. I am humbled by this recognition, and attribute it to two things – our ability to precisely and accurately assess the students’ learning needs, and the tireless effort from our entire team. Accolades like this provide us with greater impetus to work harder.”

    Notebook – Future Plans

It is just the beginning for Notebook company, and Achin and Subhayu are planning to make things big. Notebook’s future plans include-

    • Creating content in 10 vernacular languages apart from English.
    • To provide educational aids for dyslexic and visually challenged students.
    • To bridge the gap in the school education system in different subjects and different boards.

    Video Factory – Startup Journey

Rashika Jain (Co-founder & CEO of Video Factory) always knew that she wanted to be an entrepreneur and the start-up world seemed very exciting to her. So she left her corporate job in the quest to find the calling and started meeting with startups, attending startup events and workshops across the country, reading startup stories, blogs, and so on.

During her interaction with start-ups, she noticed how startup founders struggled to communicate their startup ideas. Some were too passionate and kept on talking, some went too deep into the technical aspects so a layman couldn’t really understand, while others simply lacked the gift of gab. They were all doing great stuff and knew their work, but a good chunk of these smart founders couldn’t articulate their ideas in a crisp manner and was losing opportunities because of this. Rashika knew that’s the gap that she wanted to fill and provide one-minute solutions to brands.

This gave rise to Video Factory, a 3 member team, delivering simple animated explainer videos to start-ups. They received a great initial response and realized there was a great demand for videos, which led to their expansion, and today they deliver almost every and any kind of video that helps companies excel and become more efficient.

Video Factory – Product/Service and USP

    How does it work?

People can go to the Video Factory website, share their contact details & the team will get in touch with them, understand their problem, find the best solution for it & tailor a video accordingly.

What problems does Video Factory solve?

Today, more than 70% of the content consists of videos, and by 2022, online videos will account for more than 82% of all consumer internet traffic. 93% of brands got a new customer because of a video on social media & 84% of people say that they’ve been convinced to buy a product or service by watching a brand’s video.

In such a situation, video is not only the most powerful tool of communication, but its potential is ever-increasing, with entertainment, business, and even educational sectors relying on videos to interact with the audience & keep them informed and interested. And being one of the forerunners who jumped on the bandwagon of videos, Video Factory has been utilizing every opportunity to create videos & also creating opportunities for brands to utilize videos, ever since.

Video Factory’s services help clients save a fortune on time and money and:

    • Enrich business communication (both internal and external)
    • Enhance employee training & increase the productivity of a workforce
    • Simplify and explain complex ideas in a concise manner; whether it’s a product/service, process, functioning of an app, etc.
    • Increase the reach of digital marketing campaigns
    • Achieve a greater reach and visibility
    • Increase conversions and drive sales
    • Overcome barriers of language through vernacular content
    • Overcome geographical barriers through training and e-learning content
    • Build audience trust

Covid-19 has given rise to a new business landscape; remote working, online classes, technological adoption, digital promotions, etc. These created various challenges for businesses worldwide that had to adopt newer methodologies to adapt to the changing world. Videos for training, social media promotions, presentations in webinars, etc., are really helping overcome these new challenges. Video Factory has focused on Training & E-learning videos for quite some time now & has helped many companies, even the Government, enhance their training & internal communication with videos. The team knows for a fact that videos are the closest to replacing human training effort with actionable results that make the target audience think, perceive, and react, according to the message that is meant to be conveyed.

    USP and Innovation

As a women-led organization, they are a bunch of creative thinkers, visual animators, and growth drivers who look upon themselves as a factory that up-skills itself each day to be Collaborators of Change and Harbingers of New Possibilities. In their quest to serve and do the best for their clients, the team is trying to learn every day. Video Factory focuses more on the content and does a lot of research on it, instead of just focusing on the design. They don’t promote a brand, they believe in delivering a content-driven and result-oriented video by creating a unique & intriguing story that resonates with a brand’s identity.

Since 2018, Video Factory is the only video production company substantially creating training and e-learning videos, especially in the Indian market, and it prides itself as a company that masters learning & development content.

The startup has made its internal processes very swift and set them in a very standardized format which makes the client experience really good and also reduces the time in which it delivers its services. The team has designed the content and streamlined the processes in such a way that they deliver the service in half the time of the industry’s standards, which helps reduce time and effort, thereby reducing costs and passing the benefit to their clients.

    How is Work divided?

While both the founders strategize and work together to ensure that there is cohesiveness in what they are doing and all the different verticals work for the same kind of goals, they have divided the roles based on the different verticals – sales, marketing, finance, operations, etc. Being the CEO, Rashika takes care of the operations, partly sales, since it has to be driven by both of them, and the overall work happening in the company. Mansi takes care more of the marketing & the PR and the branding of the company, as well as sales and client management. Within sales, they divide their work on the basis of the scale & revenue of the project. The smaller, day-to-day work is handled by one & the larger, bulk work is handled by the other.

    Team & Culture

Video Factory’s culture is dominated by three main aspects – Empowerment, Independence, and Responsibility. Empowerment & Independence is the motto Video Factory lives by. The founders believe that each person should have the freedom of thought & be given the chance to execute those thoughts. Video Factory’s team members have the autonomy to try working in different roles and are always encouraged to follow their gut and be the decision-maker. They believe that if every member is a master of his own, then there is more scope for growth and members also get space to be independent. In fact, they don’t even have any fixed time for lunch and don’t have a formal dress code because the founders feel that is something they can’t and don’t even want to dictate. Hence you can basically wear your mood to the office and don’t have to wear something you’re not comfortable in. But with freedom comes responsibility. At Video Factory, the team believes in taking accountability for the actions that they have freedom for. If they are given the gift of flexibility & freedom, then they also have to be accountable for it.

Founders & Team of Video Factory
    Video Factory Team

Video Factory believes in the underrated power of research for accurate results. Most of their work involves such thorough research that the actual execution becomes extremely easy. Working with clients from different industries and with companies who are into complex businesses keeps the job interesting. Working with big brands also helps them in gaining exposure and experience, challenging themselves, and working under pressure and learning. At Video Factory, everyone has to be self-reliant & do things on their own, which helps them be their own teacher and learn in the best way.

“We don’t have any rigid workstations, our workplace gives members physical space which leads to a creative flow, more room for discussions, and an overall healthy environment that ensures better teamwork. Even our flexible WFH options and timings and a safe environment, especially for women, help our team feel comfortable, which in turn makes them more confident and perform better at their job.” says Rashika Jain, Co-founder & CEO, Video Factory.

List of Best Video Production companies for Startups
Video production companies are needed for short commercials, advertisements, films and movies. Here is a list of Top Video Production companies.

Name: Name: From Day-1, the founders knew that they wanted to be a company that creates lots of videos, and only videos. They wanted to be video specialists. They didn’t want to venture into 10 different domains like digital marketing, graphics, content, etc. Their focus was on their hero – VIDEO, which is why they wanted to keep ‘video’ in the name.

When they were thinking of specialists, they thought about where these specialized products were created, the standardization of the kind of work they do. That’s when they thought of a ‘factory’, the one place where a product is made from start to end, and they envisioned the company to be exactly like that; a factory where the product, that is, the video, is created right from ideation to execution.

Tagline: Video Factory’s goal behind making videos was very clear and simple from the start – it wanted to simplify communication for businesses. Every step the team has taken since then, whether it was creating explainer videos, mobile-app tour videos, or training videos, has been to simplify communication internally (within the company’s workforce) or externally (for the company’s target audience). So it was a no-brainer that “simplifying communication” should be the tagline.

Logo: The founders wanted to just represent the name in a visual format. So they literally just drew their own logo by converting the words into an icon. This is why the logo looks like a factory (where videos are made), a camera (with which videos are made sometimes), and has a “play” button (which is the classic representation of a video).

    Video Factory
    Video Factory Logo

Hence, every aspect organically came together to form VIDEO FACTORY, a company that creates videos from start to end, to simplify communication for businesses.

Video Factory – Launch and Marketing Strategies

“Our vision & idea was really strong, we were absolutely clear about what we can do for, & provide to a brand, which is why our first customer literally fell on our laps. Digital platforms, social media networks, & digital marketing definitely helped us get more clients, but we genuinely believe that it was the good work we delivered that resulted in the classic word-of-mouth & truly helped us grow to 100 customers. And once we reached that peak, things just happened organically for us” – Rashika added.

    Video Factory – Challenges Faced

Being one of the forerunners who jumped on the bandwagon of videos in 2015, a time when images were still considered to be the best, Video Factory has been utilizing every opportunity to create videos & also creating opportunities for brands to utilize videos, ever since.

Initially, not everyone understood the power & potential of videos but the start-up sailed through, firmly believing in its vision. And soon the industry & market started to change, videos became the buzz and their impacts started to show. Video Factory was undoubtedly a contributor to bringing about this change & knew that it was time to expand the horizon & delve into something new again. The online world was gaining momentum rapidly, with a digital option for almost everything available at your fingertips. That is when the team understood that digital training & e-learning is going to be the next big thing. So, they started creating training & e-learning videos in 2018, but with the sudden influx of the Covid-19 pandemic, the entire world shifted to a ‘Digital’ mode of being, that’s when they played their masterstroke & turned the tables around by getting learning & development content in vogue.

Video Factory wants to be the leading training & e-learning video production company in India that helps businesses meet their communication objectives.

It has already created videos in more than 11 vernacular languages, all of which have been received very well by the targeted audience, and the team wants to develop its vernacular language capability even further because they believe that that is the future. They believe that if you are doing things at the grass-root level and are reaching out to the masses, then companies will need to have content in vernacular languages, and Video Factory wants to build its capacity to be able to assist them in doing so. The startup is already working with 15-20% of clients outside India; German, Spanish, and Arabic companies. It wants to grow its base because the startup’s business is such that it doesn’t have any geographical boundaries, so they want to reach out to more people abroad.

Video Factory’s fundamental goal, something that the team has envisioned from the start, is that they literally want to be a factory. They want to create videos in bulk, daily, while having a set standard for the quality, just like in a factory. They want to churn out videos like a factory, automate the processes, get technology infused into its systems in a way that a lot of the manual work can be automated while keeping the design, creativity, and the human element intact.

“We go and grow as long as you grow along that infinite ladder of success” – this is the message that Video Factory gives to its clients and the principle upon which the team envisions success.

When Video Factory talks of itself as harbingers of new possibilities, it looks forward to building one of the best video production teams in the country, working with all kinds of brands, creating the most compelling videos, reiterating remarkable socio-economic impacts, and blooming the knowledge engine in their factory to be the most robust video growth solutions provider in the millenniums to come. About Karma Kettle

Karma Kettle – World of Artisanal Tea

Karma Kettle is one of India’s finest artisanal tea blenders with 100+ different tea varietals. Karma Kettle is headquartered in Kolkata. The startup founded in 2015, has established itself as a specialist tea brand offering a wide variety of tea to choose from.

The company offers a wide and innovative range of tea like green tea with peach and jasmine, green tea with lychee, chamomile & lemongrass caffeine-free tree, Strawberries, Cockscomb & Hibiscus tea, Ashwagandha tea, Green tea with tulsi, ginger & marigold, Masala chai, etc.

Besides packaged tea, Karma Kettle sells loose tea leaves. Karma Kettle’s pyramid tea bags and iced tea has become quite popular among the target customer. The pyramid tea bags allow space for the tea brew to infuse properly. Karma Kettle also offers tea and teaware in different gift packages.

We launched our teas in 2014 selling them in biodegradable pyramid tea bags, although the market was very receptive to our loose leaf blended teas, the response for bio-degradable teabags was not as per our expectations (they cost Rs2-3 more than the standard pyramid teabag)- this stemmed from the lack of awareness of the benefits of switching to a biodegradable teabag.  We thus decided to move our focus back to standard pyramid teabags & loose leaves.  In 2019, the situation has changed a lot, we do get more and more requests from various B2B and B2C clients inquiring about biodegradable teabags- so reintroducing them is in our pipeline.

    Karma Kettle envisions

    • To educate the Indian consumer to look at tea beyond Chai or CTC and introduce Indians to fine artisanal teas of the world.
    • Making tea a versatile ingredient that can be enjoyed in many different forms- as a hot brew, cold brew, cocktail, mocktail, patisseries or / Tea infusions in food, cocktails and mocktails.
    • Reviving the ritual of afternoon tea in Indian households.

Founders of Karma Kettle and Team

Karma Kettle was founded by Dhiraj Arora and Priti Sen Arora in 2015.

    Founders of Karma Kettle
    Founders of Karma Kettle

Dhiraj Arora is a passionate tea connoisseur who did his specialization from the World Tea Academy USA and is also a certified tea Sommelier from Sri Lanka. He has personally blended most of these fabulous tea varietals, which are also now available in various hotel tea bars, cafes and gourmet stores across India.

Priti Sen Arora is the person behind the marketing and vibrant packaging of the Karma Kettle products.

Dhiraj and Priti co-owned two restaurants in Singapore. With their backgrounds, it only made sense to start Karma Kettle to carry back those flavors and pour out the story of their voyages in a teacup. As mentioned by Priti, Karma Kettle is inspired by global travels.

Karma Kettle aims to take you on a voyage across the globe with a teacup.

Karma Kettle currently has a young and dynamic team of 30+ members.

    How was Karma Kettle Started?

Dhiraj & Priti owns a 32 room heritage boutique hotel- Cochrane Place in Kurseong located in the center of the world-famous Darjeeling region. During this feat, they formed a lot of close associations with Darjeeling tea estate owners & planters.

They realized that most established Indian tea companies were packaging tea in a very traditional format (stand-up metallic pouches) and most of their season’s freshest picks were sent to export markets. Having already been involved with the F&B industry in Singapore, Priti and Dhiraj were convinced that India has huge potential and that tea could be packaged & marketed in a more globally appealing format.

“Voyages in a teacup” is the theme at Karma Kettle – teas inspired by travel destinations across the globe. Karma Kettle lets the Indian consumer enjoy an authentic cup of Moroccan Mint tea or Genmaicha tea or Japanese Matcha at reasonable prices. Also, every packaging weaves a story of its origin (take Istanbul as an example).

We started in 2015 with around 10 blends and today we have over 100+ blends packaged in different formats- Pyramid teabags, Loose Leaf, Double chambered teabags.

    Karma Kettle’s Logo

Karma is at the heart of our journey which broadly translates to what goes around comes around, says Priti. Karma relates to spreading good energy through one’s actions and reap positive benefits. The Kettle is something that is always related to tea.

The name Karma Kettle was coined in 2005, much before the company was actually started in 2015. Dhiraj wanted to start a tea room in Singapore. Initially, the idea behind Karma Kettle was to take on the traditional English tea room concept. The word ‘Karma’ was added to give an Eastern feel to the name.

Deeply rooted in our company’s philosophy is the belief that tea is a healthy beverage and that in blending tea with the purest botanicals we are able to transform tea to a salubrious infusion that positively impacts peoples body, mind and spirit. We also consciously source our tea through small and medium scale tea growers positively impacting the lives of the tea plantation workers and helping them with a better livelihood.

    Karma Kettle Target Market

Karma Kettle majorly caters to the HoReCa industry – Hotels, Restaurants & Cafes. In the last couple of years, there has been a surge in gourmet cafes and restaurants in India that are looking to serve upscale food and not compromise on the quality of ingredients.

According to Karma Kettle co-founder, Priti, Gifting is another one of the biggest segments for brands like Karma Kettle – be it weddings, corporate gifts, or other similar events. Owing to their low caffeine content, wellness and health-related benefits, tea makes for an ideal gifting option. For those looking for something unique, brands often create custom blends to suit a particular occasion or event.

Increasingly artisanal teas are also making their way into gourmet food, cocktails, desserts, and much more, owing to their versatile flavor profiles.

Though India is not as experimental as the rest of the world, over time the change in people’s preference towards gourmet and local food has been visible. At the same time, Consumers also no longer just consume tea, they expect a complete tea drinking experience with an extravagant drinking option, an inviting brand vibe, etc.; They crave authenticity and the story which can connect them to the tea sommeliers. We believe the potential for growth is certainly there, especially as consumer tastes evolve in India.

    Labkafe – How It Began

All four co-founders, given their academic and professional background, have been exposed to different laboratory equipment and materials. Their deliberation over the not so developed industry of laboratory equipment in spite of the consistent demand led them towards the ideation of Labkafe.

I was working in a steel plant quality department in Jajpur Odisha. For some basic material testing, I had to travel a lot from Bhubaneswar to Ahmedabad carrying material samples. This made me realize lack of proper laboratory infrastructure in our country. Also, while working in quality lab, we used to face lots of problems procuring exact specified lab equipment for testing. That inspired us to create a portal to address bottlenecks of procuring lab products.- Aniket Thakur

They discussed the idea with their colleagues to seek opinions and received mixed responses. Nevertheless, everybody gave an unanimous verdict with respect to the demand for laboratory equipment—it was, is, and will continue to stay.

Finally, Labkafe was realized and has created 12000+ lab equipment & 200+ lab furniture so far. Most of the products manufactured are under “Labkafe” label. Customer needs are prioritized and the design layout/material are tailored to meet user requirements.

Labkafe’s turnkey solution has eliminated middle men and multiple vendors, resulting in the reduction of procurement costs and making it affordable. Labkafe provides wide ranging services—designing, furniture and lab equipment fabrication, allied services (LPG/Pipeline connections, interior decoration etc), instruments installation, training, manpower development, annual maintenance and financial support to institutes.

    Labkafe – Funding

Bootstrapped with just Rs 1 lakh, Labkafe is a profitable and successful business today, boasting stock that includes more than 12,000 lab equipment items and over 200 lab furniture designs. “Based on design layouts and subject matter, materials are supplied to customers,” explains the founder, adding, “Most products are manufactured under our brand name ‘Labkafe’.”

    Labkafe logo

The Labkafe team was searching for names related to labs. But was not getting good name with web domain. Then finally the problem got solved over a cup of coffee. The team was sipping Nescafe coffee in the canteen, and from Nescafe, the idea of the name “LabKafe” came.

The name ‘Labkafe’ was finalized as it eases the procurement work of educational institutions and lets them relax, like a cafe provides a soothing time to its customers.

Labkafe – Business Model And Revenue Model

With a technical background, the four co-founders have worked together in crafting a practical business and revenue model.

The laboratory equipment are highly specialized, needs field expertise, installation support and thorough understanding based on the customer’s requirement. The Labkafe team provides the necessary technical support to the customer. This helped Labkafe minimize competition, avail high margin, maintain high entry barrier, procure high order basket values and improve its brand value.

Labkafe’s average order basket value is around 1 lakh INR. It focuses on generating revenue by selling products directly to institutes. For the same, they have also designed specific lab packages for secondary and senior secondary schools pertaining to CBSE/ICSE/State board curriculum. This makes it convenient for schools and in turn reaps revenue for Labkafe.

    Labkafe – User Acquisition

The Labkafe team acquires customers through:

    1. Marketing channels: Email campaigns, cold calling, Facebook marketing, Google ads, and word of mouth. GeM (Government E-Marketplace) is another great platform that has boosted Labkafe’s sales.
    2. Labkafe maintains a sales team for high value potential leads.

Labkafe’s notable clients include: DRDO, Air Force-Gwalior, State Forensic science lab, ONGC, Baidyanath Pharma, NIT Rourkela, NIT Allahabad, IBSD, St. Xavier group, GD Goenka group, and the DPS group.

Besides its on-going expansion in India, Labkafe is also exporting its catalog to three countries: Canada, Nigeria, and Bhutan.

    Labkafe – Startup Challenges

Initially, Labkafe sold industrial products and the team was extremely confident about the startup take off right from beginning, given the team’s expertise in the domain. Gradually, it dawned upon the Labkafe team that the sector was fraught with stiff competition, low margins, and complex procurement routes of the industries. Moreover, the payment delay from clients resulted in unbalanced cashflow.

So, the team started to experiment and identify a niche for avoiding financial crunch. School labs were found to be a fit and finally in July 2016, Labkafe pivoted to selling lab equipment and furniture to schools. Since then, the margins have increased significantly and the procurement decision making process has been simplified.

Labkafe has used email campaigns and other media instruments to reach out to customers. With experience, Labkafe began to focus on big ticket orders wherein lab expertise was required. It then started to work with universities/ research institutes (from planning to execution). This includes:

    1. Designing labs as per the directions of HODs.
    2. Submitting DPR (Detail Project Report) for final approval.
    3. Executing the project as per DPR.
    4. Training the professors in respective products.

SleepyCat – The Idea and Starting Up

“The Journey of SleepyCat began when I entered the old and unchanged mattress Industry. I realized a big gap existed in the market between manufacturing a mattress and eventually delivering it to a consumer” Says Kabir Siddiq, Founder & CEO of SleepyCat

Kabir observed that the long chain consisting of distribution, logistics, warehousing and retail, severely inflated the price of a mattress without reason. In addition, the quality and structure of a mattress being sold at a price like that was nowhere close to being comparable or justified. To top it all, mattress shopping was troublesome with so many unnecessary choices.

“I wanted to simplify this and make the process of mattress-shopping fun and easy while delivering a world-class product through just four simple clicks! ” Added Kabir Siddiq, SleepyCat founder

SleepyCat’s logo features a sleepy cat. With an amazing hidden notion.

    SleepyCat Logo

“Cats like to sleep for 20 hours a day and the name ‘SleepyCat’ pays tribute to the Garfield in all of us that’s just wants to eat and sleep the whole day”

    SleepyCat – Product

SleepyCat is India’s First Mattress-In-A-Box brand. The box mattress is manufactured using a special technology which makes it compact enough to be packed in a small box.

The main aim of the company is to simplify mattress shopping. It delivers a specialized gel memory foam based mattress that comes conveniently packed in a box straight from their factory to the customer’s doorstep free of any shipping costs. This way SleepyCat help the customers save 75% costs that would otherwise be spent on unnecessary faux material and middlemen cuts.

We have adopted a very disruptive model in the current industry and focus on the consumer. We make mattress shopping easy, convenient and affordable.

The company also offers benefits like 10 years of unbeatable warranty, 30 nights free trial and one day deliveries in cities like Mumbai and Bangalore.

SleepyCat also does its part of being socially aware. Thus, with the help of the SleepyCat Community, it gives back to society by donating mattresses to those in need.

    SleepyCat – Revenue Model

The SleepyCat Revenue is quite simple. As SleepyCat delivers directly from their factory to the customers, it can sell the mattresses at a cheaper price. It keeps a fair margin on every product.  In May 2018, the company reported a revenue of INR 3.5 Crore.

    SleepyCat – Customer Acquisition

Starting off on Amazon LaunchPad was a very important step for SleepyCat. It gave SleepyCat the much-required opportunity to tap into an already set up marketplace.

Hence, getting the initial set of order was the most exciting time for us. The orders came in slow but steady in the initial months

Gradually, SleepyCat started growing its online presence by starting its own site. The company took the help of social media to attract its customers. It penetrated social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram. The company also put in effort to attract their target customers through content that was fun and readable. Besides video content was created with the help of influencers to aid the audience understand the brand further.

    SleepyCat – Challenges

Being the first of its kind in India, SleepyCat aimed at disrupting the traditional mattress industry. This was a challenge in itself as buyers were not aware of the concept of a ‘Bed-In-A-Box’ and the efficiencies around it.

As said by Kabir, Logistics also was always a challenge. Since the company uses third-party courier service, it always was on the firing end when they did not deliver on time.

SleepyCat is responsible for the customers’ product regardless if the courier is not under our control.

    SleepyCat – Competitors

Many competitor brands are entering the market now. There are many companies like Sleepyheads, Comfort Mattress, Dorsal, Dan-Foam, A.H. Beard and Molaflex.

However, the company believes that the best way to deal with competition is to keep their customers at the forefront. Also, SleepyCat innovates on sleep products and always strive to provide something new and groundbreaking to the customers. It aims to build the trust required and create a positive presence in the market by maintaining transparency with customers at all stages.

When we are able to build greater bonds with our customers that go beyond the product itself, we know we’ve done it right.

    How was Oxedent Started?

Biplab Poddar, the owner of Oxedent, pursued a B.Tech Degree from Kalyani Government College in Electronics. Like all other parents, it was expected from him too, to get a 9-5 job in an MNC and get his life settled. But it was way too different from what he thought.

Biplab started doing paid internships right from 3rd year of his college and helped many startups with their digital marketing who were just starting up and can’t afford full-time employees. Going forward he started learning advanced techniques and tools of Digital marketing.

“I read an interview of a freelancer making $30000 per annum from consulting on digital marketing to foreign clients, then I learned about freelancing platforms like PeoplePerHour and UpWork. I created a profile immediately, got my first job in about a few weeks. It was a London based Law firm, I helped them create Google AdWords campaigns, and they are still my client”, recalls the Oxedent founder.

This was the turning point of his life and since then, he never looked back and was making a handsome sum of money every month in the final year of his engineering days. Poddar never wanted to join a full-time job but was unable to convince his parents and had to join a full-time role as Digital marketing manager in a real estate company.

The founder paralleled freelancing with his job and continued like this for 3 months after college. More companies were inquiring for his services and single-handedly he couldn’t deliver.

“Then finally the fire in me made me quit my job to be on the crest on a wave and hired more digital marketing enthusiasts, trained them, and made them a part of my team. It was September 2017, I registered Oxedent as a Pvt. Ltd company”, says Biplab.

The company is into PPC management services and the biggest USPs are:

    • They’re ROI & Focused

    Oxedent – Startup Challenges

Hiring the right talent was/is a challenge in Kolkata for a very niche service (PPC management). When Poddar was managing clients’ ad campaigns single-handedly, he ensured all of them are profitable (made sure they get at least $4 in sales for each $1 they spend on ads). While growing the client base it was his main concern that the quality of his works is the same and clients get maximum ROI.

Biplab Poddar initiated a training program called ‘oxedent mini’ where he teaches PPC & CRO to candidates with digital marketing experience and then hire them, to maintain the quality of his service and highest ROI for the clients.
