  • Shark Tank India-Backed Snitch Raises $40 Million to Stitch Global Dreams & Fast Fashion Push, Led by 360 ONE Asset

Snitch, the breakout D2C menswear brand transforming fashion for Indian men, has raised up to $40 million in its Series B funding round. The round was led by 360 ONE Asset, with participation from existing investors IvyCap Ventures and SWC Global, along with Ravi Modi Family Office (founders of Manyavar) and other angel investors, who joined in this round.

The fresh capital will fuel Snitch’s aggressive next phase of growth:

    • Scale offline retail from 55+ to 100+ stores by the end of 2025
    • Enter quick commerce, delivering fashion in hours
    • Launch new product categories across apparel and lifestyle
    • Pilot international markets

Siddharth Dungarwal, Founder & CEO, Snitch, said, “Built on belief, speed and an obsession with our customer, Snitch has been a force redefining fashion making in India for the world. This fundraise is a backing to our belief that Indian fashion can move with speed, scale and confidence, and truly compete at a global stage. With 120% YoY growth, 55+ stores with strong unit economics, and strong loyal customer base, we’re stepping into a bigger league, building a world-class brand with India at its heart and agility at its core. As we gear up for global expansion and soon enter the public markets, this marks a bold step towards creating one of India’s most iconic fashion stories.”

Chetan Naik, Senior Fund Manager and Strategy Head – Technology, 360 ONE Asset, said, “Snitch is one of the fastest-growing profitable scaled D2C brands in India. It has built a unique playbook in Indian fashion, combining trend agility, digital-first execution, and omnichannel reach. With a distinctive operating model that blends weekly design launches, full-stack execution, and lean manufacturing, Snitch has demonstrated the rare ability to deliver high growth while maintaining strong unit economics and exceptional capital efficiency. Its sharp focus on men’s fashion, backed by a scalable offline model, positions it well to become a category-defining brand. We are excited to back Siddharth and the Snitch team as they lead the next phase of fashion innovation from India.”

“Our reinvestment in Snitch further confirms our conviction in its strong execution ability, capital-efficient growth, and sharp positioning in the men’s fashion space. With a clear focus on Gen Z and millennial consumers and a scalable omnichannel strategy, the brand is well on its way to becoming a category leader. We are happy to continue supporting the team in their journey.”

    • Vikram Gupta, Founder and Managing Partner, IvyCap Ventures

“Snitch continues to demonstrate strong supply chain management as well as high focus on customer experience. Over the last 18 months, with the offline expansion, Snitch has established itself as a truly omnichannel brand. We are looking forward to our continued partnership with Siddharth and team to grow Snitch into a leading men’s apparel brand in the country.”

    • Tuck Lye Koh, Founding Partner, SWC Global

Snitch previously raised ₹110 Cr in its Series A round in December 2023, which laid the foundation for its offline expansion, tech stack, and product depth. Since then, it has doubled revenue, strengthened brand equity, and built a community-first approach to fashion that resonates deeply with Gen Z and millennial men.

PwC India Investment Banking team acted as the exclusive financial advisor to Snitch on the successful closure of the Series B round. JSA acted as the legal counsel to Snitch on this transaction.

  • Cred Seeking New Funding as Valuation Falls 30% to $4 Billion

According to a media report, Cred, a credit card payment network, is in negotiations to raise $100–200 million in new capital, mostly from current investors. The startup established by Kunal Shah would be valued down at about $4 billion in the acquisition, compared to $6.4 billion three years prior. The Singapore state fund GIC, which spearheaded the last infusion in 2022, is probably going to lead this financing. Participation is also anticipated from other significant Cred shareholders, including Peak XV Partners, Tiger Global, Ribbit Capital, and QED Innovation Labs. According to many media sources, talks are in progress with investors, but the valuation will be less than its 2022 round. On the basis of better financial performance and a decrease in the company’s financial burn, new funds are to be raised. Three years ago, Cred amassed $140 million in a variety of main and secondary deals, led by GIC, as the fintech company’s valuation increased from $3.8 billion to $6.3 billion.

    Cred to Focus on Profitability

Cred is focused on profitability and plans to enter the public markets in around two years. A few profitable quarters prior to its IPO (initial public offering) is the internal strategy. According to a media report, the valuation decrease is consistent with the IPO pricing strategy. The lower valuation coincides with a worldwide reset in the IT industry across all industries. Last year, the payments juggernaut Stripe, based in Silicon Valley, reduced its valuation from its top of $95 billion in 2021 to $50 billion. Employee shares were purchased by investors for $91.5 billion earlier this year through a tender offer. The capitalisation of Swedish finance company Klarna fell from $46 billion to $6.7 billion. Aiming for a valuation of more than $15 billion for its IPO, Klarna has postponed listing.

Cred Cutting Cost to Reduce Cash Burn

Cred has been reducing expenses in an effort to lower cash burn over the past year as it seeks to become profitable. Cred has not yet submitted its most recent financial statements, although its revenue has been increasing year over year. Various media reports state that it recorded total revenues of about INR 3,000 crore in FY25. With operating losses dropping to INR 609 crore from roughly INR 1,024 crore in FY24, Cred claimed total revenue of INR 2,473 crore. As part of a larger plan to expand credit distribution beyond unsecured personal loans, one of the company’s main sources of income, the fintech company introduced loans backed by mutual funds in February.

Cred also runs Newtap Finance, which, as of the end of December 2024, had a net loss of INR 5.3 crore and total assets under control of INR 1,141 crore. Shah, the founder of Cred, owns all of Newtap Technologies, which is the primary owner of Newtap Finance. Originally founded in 2018 as a platform for paying credit card bills, the firm has subsequently expanded into credit, commerce, insurance, and transactions via the Unified Payments Interface (UPI). In terms of the quantity of transactions handled, it is now the seventh-largest UPI payment app. There were 144 million transactions in March. It settled compensation totalling INR 55,000 crore, which is one of the biggest amounts in the sector.

PharmEasy – About And How It Works?

Pharmacy is an e-commerce platform for the purchase of medicines and other healthcare-related equipment. Whenever one uploads a prescription on PharmEasy, it is then sent to a drugstore in their vicinity. The company uses a mobile app and web technology to offer the best quality healthcare products and essentials to its customers at affordable rates.

You might be thinking, Ah! discounted products, they would be of cheap quality for sure. But no, a discount has nothing to do with compromise in terms of quality. The pharmacy provides top-notch products at par with the quality that you can find in reputed pharmacies and medical stores.

Once PharmEasy sends your medical prescription to the drugstore, a delivery agent collects the medicines from the drugstore while adhering to all sorts of precautions and guidelines. Your order is then packaged and eventually delivered to your doorstep.

    PharmEasy – Industry

Along with all the industries of now, the medicine/healthcare industry has also been witnessing decent growth empowered by the penetration of new-age technologies and the internet. Internet users have already grown at a CAGR of 18.17% between 2015 and 2019 and are further expected to rise at a CAGR of 9.3% till 2028. Besides, the e-commerce transactions also increased by 26.2% in 2023.

The market of Indian e-pharmacies is predicted by a leading consulting firm to grow greater than 7X times between 2019 and 2023. It reached a total value of $394.09 million in 2024 and is expected to rise to $801.34 million by 2030, at a CAGR of 12.62%, which is fascinating, to say the least.

    PharmEasy – Founders and Team

Dharmil Sheth and Dr. Dhaval Shah are the founders of PharmEasy.

    PharmEasy Owner, Founders
    Dharmil Sheth and Dhaval Shah

    Dharmil Sheth

Dharmil is the Co-founder of PharmEasy along with being the Co-founder of API Holdings. He is also the founder and president of Ekagrata. Sheth also founded 91streets before founding PharmEasy. Dharmil is an Electronics Engineer with a Btech degree, after which he obtained an MBA in Marketing from IIM Ghaziabad. Techno Gravity Solutions and MakeMyTrip.com were among the first companies that Dharmil Sheth worked with in Business Development and as a Summer Intern respectively.

    Dr. Dhaval Shah

Dr. Dhaval Shah has an MBBS from Rajiv Gandhi Government Medical College, after which he pursued an MBA from XLRI Jamshedpur. Shah has been the General Secretary at both of his colleges. He eventually became a Consultant at McKinsey & Company and then founded PharmEasy and API Holdings.

The team behind PharmEasy has set its sights on becoming India’s best healthcare delivery venture. The focus at the moment is digitization to the maximum possible extent. PharmEasy is a private company that is adding new employees to its task force every other day.

PharmEasy is undergoing a significant change as three co-founders of the parent organization, API Holdings—Dharmil Sheth, Dhaval Shah, and Hardik Dedhia—step back from active roles in the firm.

Siddharth Shah, the fourth co-founder, will continue to lead the company.

As per a company statement on 22 January 2025, the three co-founders will remain part of the group, align their shareholding for the long term, and continue as board members or observers, but they have chosen to step away from daily executive responsibilities.

    PharmEasy – Startup Story

Dharmil Sheth, the founder of PharmEasy, and his doctor pal, Dr. Dhaval Shah came up with the idea of building an online pharmacy. Both of them agreed on the potential of technology in the healthcare sector and it is this idea that primarily gave rise to PharmEasy in 2014. Presently, the company extends its supplies to nearly 98% of the Indian pin codes.

The company wanted to achieve the mission of doorstep delivery of everything related to healthcare, which it is always on the verge of achieving. Digitization has become an integral component of India’s healthcare industry. Be it scheduling a doctor’s appointment or delivery of reports and medicines, every step in the industry has been digitized. A major chunk of the credit goes to the e-pharmacies like PharmEasy for this initiative. The “health commerce industry” in India is growing at unprecedented rates courtesy of these e-pharmacies.

“Take it easy PharmEasy” says the tagline of the company.

    PharmEasy Logo
    PharmEasy Logonet

    PharmEasy – Business Model

PharmEasy delivers medicines and other medical accessories across Indian towns and cities. It is like Grofers for medicine. The pin codes maintained by PharmEasy are used to identify pharmacies closest to the customers. Customers can either access PharmEasy’s website or use its mobile app to order items. They are entitled to discounts of up to 20% if they order using the mobile app, which further increases brand recognition and adds new customers to PharmEasy.

PharmEasy is an e-pharmacy, the processes of which are mostly online acting as a 3-way chain between the buyers, suppliers, and the distribution network.

Buyers – PharmEasy is a ready platform from which buyers can search for their medicines or healthcare accessories and buy them online without any hassles.

Suppliers – PharmEasy collaborates with a wide range of local suppliers and medical shops, all of which help the company arrange their stocks and keep them live online. Besides, the company also earns revenue from various pharmaceutical companies that want to showcase their products online and on the PharmEasy app as featured brands.

Distribution channel – PharmEasy operates with a vast distribution spread out all across the nation. This helps the company to deliver its products for a broad range of pin codes all over India.

Due to various rules and regulations set by the Indian government, the company doesn’t deliver Schedule H drugs.

Why do people abstain from e-pharmacies? Research has found that most people do this because they aren’t sure where the medicines are coming from. PharmEasy is dispelling this notion for good!

    PharmEasy – Revenue Model

PharmEasy primarily earns by displaying the sponsored results of various pharmaceutical entities. These kinds of advertisements are found on the home pages of such organizations. Advertising is a major source of revenue and this e-pharmacy leverages it to the hilt. Besides, with the new-age strategies, you can now advertise your products, services, or business with little or no money and market your brand. Attractive discounts also contribute to PharmEasy’s revenue. Furthermore, PharmEasy earns commission from its customers for the healthcare products and medicines that are sold via the platform. The brand also earns through the delivery charges that get levied on the products.

    PharmEasy – Funding and Investors

API Holdings, the parent company of PharmEasy, has raised INR 1,804 crore ($216 million) in a funding round led by Ranjan Pai’s Manipal Education and Medical Group (MEMG) along with its existing investors on 29 April 2024. However, this new investment comes with a 90% drop in the company’s valuation from its highest point. The valuation of PharmEasy as of September 2024 is $458 million, slashed 92% from the peak of $5.4 billion.

PharmEasy has received $1.7 billion in funding to date in over 14 rounds. PharmEasy had last raised a private equity fund from VestinWolf Capital Management after raising a pre-IPO round worth $354 million from a clutch of investors. Market volatility, low investor sentiments, and the funding winter are some of the popular reasons behind PharmEasy looking to raise funds at a lower valuation.

The primary round saw an infusion of the $354 million funding round was worth $204 million and led by Amansa Capital, Steadview Capital, OrbiMed, Abu Dhabi’s sovereign wealth fund ADQ, and more. In the second round of funding that PharmEasy received, the company mopped up around $150 mn from the partial exits of a bunch of existing angels and other early-stage investors like Fundamentum, Eight Roads Ventures, Bessemer Venture Partners, and others. PharmEasy, which is all set to file its Draft Red Herring Prospectus (DRHP) has also disclosed that over 20 senior employees, five founders, and some of the new investors had picked secondary shares at a valuation of $5.6 billion. The company was valued at $5.4 billion in February 2022. The company is yet to decide on its IPO round and will not be setting its pricing before the nod from SEBI.

Before this round where the company has further raised $354 million worth of funding in its Pre-IPO round of funding, split into 2 rounds, it raised a whopping $500 million round via its Series F funding round that was led by Arokiaswamy Velumani, valuing the company at $1.8 billion in June 2021.

    PharmEasy – ESOPs

PharmEasy was reportedly valued at $5.4 billion in February 2022. Due to the exceptional growth that the company had seen, PharmEasy decided to reward the cofounders and employees by creating new employee stock options (ESOPs) for them.

The healthcare major had passed a special resolution, where it has declared that it would be allotting around 79,987 ESOPs to each of the five co-founders of the firm – Siddharth Shah, Dharmil Sheth, Hardik Dedhia, Karsh Parekh, and Dhaval Shah. The collective worth of all these shares making the Founders’ ESOP pool is estimated to be around INR 236 crores. PharmEasy has also additionally expanded its ESOP pool with INR 356 crore worth of new options for eligible employees. This new ESOP pool has reportedly been expanded with 603,103 equity shares. Moreover, PharmEasy has also amended its existing ESOP Scheme to align it with the SEBI regulations.

    PharmEasy – Acquisitions

PharmEasy has acquired 3 companies –

    Acquiree Name Date Deal Value
    Aknamed September 14, 2021 $144 million

    Medlife May 25, 2021 $250 million

Aknamed – A healthcare company that strives to streamline the supply chain of the industry in India. PharmEasy has acquired Aknamed on September 14, 2021. PharmEasy acquired the majority stakes of Aknamed for an initial investment of INR 308 crores ($41.90 mn). The company will be acquiring Aknamed completely in a few months in a deal size estimated to be around INR 1000 crores ($136.04 mn).

Thyrocare Technologies – Thyrocare is a full automatic diagnostic laboratory, which claims to be the first of its kind in India. PharmEasy acquired Thyrocare on June 26, 2021. In a definitive agreement where the company has acquired 66.1% stakes in Thyrocare, the deal size is mentioned at INR 4564 crores ($620 mn).

Medlife – Medlife is an online medicine supplier from Bangalore, India, which has facilities for home delivery. On September 22, 2020, the Competition Commission of India approved the merger of Medlife (Online Pharmacy) with PharmEasy. It is noted as the First Major Consolidation in this sector after the entry of Amazon and Reliance. According to this deal, PharmEasy’s Parent Entity will acquire 100% equity in Medlife and the promoters of Medlife will get a 19.95% stake in the entity. Though the talks of the acquisition began in August 2020, the CCI approval was received in September 2020, and it is not earlier than May 2021, 8 months after the CCI nod that PharmEasy finally announced the merger with its rival Medlife. From May 25, 2021, Medlife discontinued its operations and fully merged into the PharmEasy platform. The company acquired majority stakes in Medlife valued at $250 million.

    PharmEasy – Challenges Faced

The company started its journey in the year 2014 and has now become a major player in the online pharmacy segment. However, PharmEasy didn’t witness overnight success. Challenges are inevitable and the mentioned e-pharmacy also had its share of problems. It was difficult for PharmEasy to deliver products without a prescription.

Knowing the medicines by their names wasn’t enough. A valid prescription was compulsory for supplying the products. Many didn’t want to upload their prescriptions fearing consequences. Furthermore, location tracking back then when the company started, was difficult for PharmEasy’s delivery agents. It is not like that anymore, though.

The company eventually overcame the challenges thrown at it and has grown tremendously since its inception in 2014.

    PharmEasy Layoffs

PharmEasy laid off 40 employees, as per the reports on June 16, 2022. The company has laid off around 40 of the employees who were working with its subsidiary Docon Technologies during the week. These employees who were laid off mainly belonged to the sales department and hailed from Mumbai, Delhi, Chandigarh, Jaipur, and more. PharmEasy has offered a two-month salary for the employees as part of the severance package and is reportedly helping the employees too in getting new jobs. It was also announced that Docon Technologies would be rebranded to PharmEasy One and would then be a whole entity and that most of the Docon employees would be shifted to any of the API Holdings’ entities.

India’s IPO market slowed in 2022 after 2021 saw the largest amount of funds raised in at least a decade. API Holdings Ltd., owner of India’s largest online pharmacy PharmEasy, withdrew its preliminary filing for an initial public offering, citing market conditions and strategic considerations. PharmEasy had filed its DRHP with the market regulator SEBI and was planning to raise INR 6,250 crore through a fresh issue of shares on November 10, 2021. The existing investors of the company were not selling any shares in the upcoming IPO, as per the DRHP.

Furthermore, PharmEasy had announced that it would be looking for a pre-IPO fundraising of up to INR 1,250 crore via private placement after consulting with the BRLMs (Book Running Lead Manager). However, according to the latest news, PharmEasy was looking to slash its IPO valuation considering the volatility of the current market, as of February 19, 2022. PharmEasy currently partners with over 60K brick-and-mortar pharmacies from across the country and has served 20 mn+ patients since it was formed.

Finally, there is no shortcut to success and PharmEasy is a case in point. From being an unknown candidate in the online pharmacy space to becoming an established brand, Dharmil Sheth-founded PharmEasy has conquered varying obstacles to reach the zenith of success.

  • A Former World Bank Executive Floats a VC Fund of INR 300 Cr

Sayan Ghosh, a former World Bank officer, has launched Ortella Global Capital (OG Capital), a new venture capital (VC) fund worth INR 300 crore (about $36 million), which would work with creators to co-build firms. The fund would distribute cheques of up to INR 15 crore ($2 million) apiece and intends to invest in over 20 early and growth stage firms in the consumer and “enterprise solutions” sectors.

OG Capital said in a statement that it has already invested in three firms. It lacked particular information about these startups, though. In addition to providing funding, OG Capital intends to support startups by adding them to its portfolio and assisting with business expansion.

Created Largest Early-Stage Investment Team in Indi

OG Capital asserts that it has put together the biggest team of early-stage investors in India, which includes seasoned founders and operators. Scaling startups, determining product-market fit, increasing profitability, developing go-to-market strategies, and facilitating high-value exits are just a few of the areas in which the team specialises.

The goal of OG Capital is to transform early-stage investing by doing more than just writing cheques. In order to assist creators in facing the major obstacles head-on and creating organisations that are meaningful, successful, and have rapid growth, Ghosh stated. He further elaborated that the company believes in getting its hands dirty by supporting startups right from the start. The venture capital business stated that it will promote projects that prioritise gender diversity, sustainability, and grassroots effect in an effort to generate 10X returns. The schedule for closing the fund and deploying it, however, was unclear.

    India’s Startup Ecosystem

A spirit of entrepreneurship is in the air! With the number of tech companies in India reaching 122,000 to date, with a peak of over 16,000 new additions in 2020, the country has solidified its position as a major global centre for innovation and businesses. In the past ten years, India has seen an unprecedented surge in the creation and funding of startups.

The financial landscape has also changed significantly, with the largest levels of investment over the last 10 years occurring in 2020 and 2021. Despite the challenges in the funding landscape in 2023, venture capitalists, private equity firms, angel investors, and investment firms have shown a surprising level of faith in Indian entrepreneurs. The investment scenario—from both Indian and foreign investors—has been positive and demonstrates resilience in the face of market concerns, with total funding of $8.4 billion in India in 2023.

From 2014 to 2023, a number of factors, including government initiatives, digitisation, and rising internet usage, drove the expansion of India’s top-funded industries. According to the Tracxn research, these industries include Edtech, Retail, Enterprise Applications, Fintech, Transportation & Logistics, Food & Agriculture, Auto, and Travel & Hospitality.

With a total funding of $6.73 billion throughout the years and $6.23 billion in just ten years, Indian investment in the Deep Tech (R&D orientated) industry has been growing consistently, demonstrating the nation’s dedication to science and technology and its continuous expansion. This pattern highlights how crucial technology-driven innovation is to determining India’s future.

  • Namma Yatri Parent Secures $11 Million in Funding from Google, Blume Ventures, and Others

Moving Tech Innovations Ltd., the company behind community-led mobility apps Namma Yatri and Yatri Sathi, has raised $11 million (INR 92 crore) in a pre-Series A funding round. Google and a number of other investors joined Blume Ventures and Antler in leading the round.

The money will be put into research and development, new products, and technology so that drivers can be more empowered, public transport can be more integrated, and the customer experience can be better.

Through direct-to-driver and multimodal transportation models, Moving Tech aims to increase driver earnings while providing reliable, affordable, seamless, and sustainable mobility solutions for all, according to a statement from the company.

The mobility division of Juspay, which was backed by Softbank, was spun off into Moving Tech in April 2020. Former Juspay employees Shan M S and Magizhan Selvan are at the forefront of the newly formed mobility company.

Magizhan Selvan and Shan M S, Co-founders of Moving Tech, said, With our people-first approach, our goal is to build empathetic products and tech that are 10x better. By collaborating with Samaaj (Community), Sarkar (Government), and Bazaar (Business), we aspire to create an impact similar to UPI in India and Linux worldwide. This funding will enable us to innovate and grow further.

So, What Exactly is Namma Yatri?

Namma Yatri, which began its operations in November 2022, is a transportation app that competes with Rapido, Ola, and Uber. Drivers could retain the whole fee on Namma Yatri, in contrast to rivals, who usually take a 30% cut.

However, drivers who wished to list their services on the app started to pay a monthly fee in 2023. Up to 10 journeys each day cost the drivers INR 3.5 per trip, while an unlimited subscription costs INR 25. According to the company’s accessible dashboard, Namma Yatri has 73.9 lahks registered consumers and 4.19 lakh drivers who have earned INR 714.03 crore from 4.63 crore trips completed thus far.

Namma Yatri, Accelerating Growth by Dogging Sector Giants

Namma Yatri became the first to implement the direct-payment concept in Bengaluru. Afterwards, other major ride-hailing companies including Rapido, Ola, and Uber have shown interest in implementing this strategy to save GST fees.

Namma Yatri first appeared in Bengaluru, Mysuru, Tumkur, and Kochi when it was introduced as the Yatri app. In Kolkata, it was initially introduced as Yatri Saathi. The business has just extended its operations to Chennai, where it now lets users order “metro tickets” online.

  • India Digital SME Credit Report 2023 Reflects $220 Billion Credit Deficit in MSME Financing, Alternate Funding Gains Ground

The collaborative report by GetVantage and Redseer Strategy Consultants – The India Digital SME Credit Report 2023 – finds a potential $220 billion credit deficit in MSME funding. Analysts suggest that alternate financing is the way forward for MSMEs to secure funds.

The India Digital SME Credit Report 2023 indicates a potential $220 billion credit deficit that poses a major roadblock for the Indian MSMEs to secure financing. The collaborative report between GetVantage and Redseer Strategy Consultants states that only $53 billion was infused into the market through various channels, serving only 30% of the overall addressable demand, resulting in an alarming capital gap of more than $150 billion.

Bhavik Vasa, Founder and CEO, of GetVantage, shared that the credit deficit is larger than the GDP of some developing countries, and it is anticipated to widen further, due to the prevalent economic and regulatory setting.

“As more businesses enter the market, it is evident that the demand for credit presents a potential to reach nearly $570 billion in the next few years,” he added.

Pandemic-Driven Increase in Working Capital Demand
    Traditional Funding Challenges for MSMEs
Opportunities for NBFCs and Digitally Oriented SMEs

    Importance of Revenue-Based Financing (RBF)

    Digitalization Challenges for Indian MSMEs

India is home to 64 million MSMEs which contributes about 30% to the country’s GDP, but is highly plagued with limited digitalization and limited access to capital. The report reveals that only 12% of them, or 7.7 million, MSMEs in India have been digitized to the fullest. These are the merchants who have already designed their platform and generate 30% of their revenues digitally. The major boost occurred during the pandemic when forced digitalization facilitated exponential growth, leading to lower transformation costs, increased utility, increased revenue, and improved communication and flexibility.

Pandemic-Driven Increase in Working Capital Demand

Before the pandemic, the working capital demand was growing at a stable annual rate of $70 billion. However, the forced digitalization during the pandemic hiked the demand by more than $100 billion in just two years. According to the Redseer consultants, over the next few years, the demand for working capital is expected to rise steadily at a CAGR of about 20% and is projected to reach approximately $570 billion.

    Traditional Funding Challenges for MSMEs

The funding challenges ranging from accessibility to red-tapism have been preventing the growth of MSMEs for decades. While the government has made dedicated efforts to tackle liquidity issues faced by SMEs, conventional financial institutions for long made little headway in effectively addressing the accessibility concerns of these businesses. Traditional lending institutions perceived SMEs as risky investments. Their multiple working models and non-conventional payment terms prohibited them from securing funds. Also, financial institutions require 90-120 days to disburse credits, therefore hindering the workflow of the SMEs as they require timely working capital to meet their operational needs.

The report also noted that the absence of collateral and comprehensive documentation has consistently posed obstacles for traditional lenders like commercial banks in offering sufficient funding to SMEs.

10+ Ways You can Raise Funding Without Losing Equity
A comprehensive guide that lists 10 funding options for startups that will help you raise funding without losing equity.

Opportunities for NBFCs and Digitally Oriented SMEs

Public and private banks are currently able to fulfill only 30 percent of the total demands from SMEs, creating opportunities for NBFCs (Non-Banking Financial Companies) and third-party lenders. Consequently, 40 percent of the overall capital investment in the SME market has been directed toward digitally oriented SMEs, which represent just 12 percent of the total MSMEs, as reported by Redseer.

Kanishka Mohan, Partner at Redseer said, “Small businesses account for 90% of credit demand but continue to struggle to raise capital, owing to poor business metrics, limited assets, and uncertain growth projections. If the current economic and regulatory climate continues, this gap is likely to widen significantly over the next five years.”

    Rise of Alternative Financing Solutions

Alternative financing has emerged as a vital resource for SMEs, where innovative lending models like revenue-based financing, recurring-revenue advances, and trade receivable financing offer accessibility, flexibility, and transparency. These solutions, which resemble quasi-equity options, are well-suited to support SMEs in scaling their operations.

Vasa commented that alternate financing has a vital role to play in extending the limited reach of traditional lenders to serve millions of new-economy businesses and emerging sectors. He said, “The $570 billion credit requirement for digital SMEs in the coming five years represents an unprecedented opportunity for alternate financing platforms, NBFCs, and traditional financial lenders like banks to collaborate and catalyze economic growth by prioritizing compliance, governance, inclusion, and innovation.”

Currently, approximately 5% of the lending market is supplied by alternative finance channels. This segment experienced significant growth during the pandemic and is expected to double over the next five years, reaching approximately 11%. This growth can be attributed to increased market awareness, a focus on serving SMEs, and the flexibility offered in repayment options.

According to Harsh Somaiya, Co-Founder, of The Bear House, the economic growth in India has been fueled by the SMEs as they play a vital role in generating employment and contributing to the overall GDP of the country. As digitalization is increasing rapidly, having access to this credit opportunity would alleviate fund-raising challenges that small businesses generally face, which would help with their rapid expansion as well. “New-age credit platforms are keeping the business goals at the forefront. This along with the credit opportunity will help build a healthy financial ecosystem for SMEs and MSMs to thrive in,” he added.

    Importance of Revenue-Based Financing (RBF)

The Redseer analysts stated that RBF is now more relevant than ever before. Being data-driven, revenue-based, and flexible has made RBF one of the most robust and popular forms of alternative funding. With a standard flat fee structure ranging from 6% to 12% and loan amounts tailored to suit the working capital requirements of a variety of businesses, SMEs can benefit from convenient, unbiased access to capital at competitive costs.

Sameer Seth, Founder and CEO, of Hunger Inc., said, “The growth challenges faced by millions of MSMEs today have in a way helped shape the ecosystem, making it easier for businesses to raise capital and be much aware of what kind of capital to be raised when. This is how India is reshaping credit accessibility within the founder community.”
