    How was Plai Started?

While working at their previous company (Uptech), founders Andriy Bas, Sasha Chepurnoi, and Oleh Kryvytskyi faced the need to align the team around common goals (OKRs), share feedback, conduct performance reviews, etc. They didn’t find any suitable solutions to meet their needs. Almost all performance management software is designed for enterprises (with annual contracts) and is too complicated and too expensive for smaller companies. And most importantly – employees don’t use them unless forced to.

So, Andriy, Sasha, and Oleh bootstrapped a solution for their needs with the combination of Google Docs/Spreadsheets/Notion. And this gave them the idea for Plai. They did some research, and over 20+ companies confirmed their hypothesis. Most early-stage companies have similar problems with performance management and struggle the way the co-founders did.

Andriy, Sasha, and Oleh quickly created a landing page and launched it in 2 weeks. They posted about it on social, BetaList, BetaPage. After receiving positive feedback and 500+ beta sign-ups, they started working on the solution.

    Founders of Plai

Andriy and Sasha worked on multiple projects at work together and have known each other since 2016. Oleh also worked in the same company as Andriy and Sasha since 2018, and they all 3 worked on several projects.

    Andriy Bas

Andriy is a Bachelor of Science graduate from the Kyiv Polytechnic Institute. He has been the CEO of Plai since July 2019. Starting as a Lifeguard at Kalahari Resorts & Conventions, Andriy has served numerous designations like Software Engineer and Senior iOS/Android Developer at many different companies like Netspace, Explain Inc. and Softermii. Bas has also been the Cofounder and Team Lead of Uptech. He was then the Co-founder and CPO of Teamroom, after which he founded Plai. Andri is currently also the Cofounder of No Code, No Problem.

    Sasha Chepurnoi

Sasha has a Master’s degree in ML and is currently operating as the CTO at Plai. He is also a part-time, backend engineer at Uptech.  He was also a student at the Kyiv Polytechnic Institute. Sasha was earlier a professional soccer player, who started off his career on the field, but unfortunately had to leave the sport after a serious injury that he suffered.

Oleh is the Cofounder and Product Designer at Plai. He was previously the UX/UI designer at Uptech, where he worked with Andriy.

Oleh is responsible for the product and the UI. Sasha is responsible for the technical implementation, the tech stack, stability, and availability of Plai.

There are somewhere between 11-50 employees of Plai as per its Linkedin profile. The team members are all based in Kyiv, Ukraine. Work sometimes from the office, sometimes remotely.

    Plai means “path” in Ukrainian.

    Plai Logo

“We believe that Plai is a path forward for small teams to become successful companies. We didn’t argue much about the name, nor did we have long meetings to agree on the name. It was one of the options that we came up with initially, it was short and concise, there was no much competition on the internet for this short name, all the team liked it, so we adopted it from the beginning”, says Andriy Bas, CEO of Plai, about the selection of the name.

    Plai – Startup Launch

Plai launched the landing page in July 2019 before any product development. By promoting the product idea on BetaList/BetaPage websites and social media, the team collected over 500 beta sign-ups. These were the original users. Then, as they started working on the product, they were writing regular blog posts, and the traffic was also attracting subscribers and early users.

That way, by the time the startup launched in October 2019, it had over 2000 email lists to notify. These were the users of the free version of the product. By March 2020, when Plai launched the Pro version of the product, it managed to convert 5 users to paying subscribers. And have been growing almost 50% month-over-month in MRR ever since.

    Plai – Startup Challenges

One of the first major challenges — was to identify what exactly customers need, and thus how the product should look like. To understand that — the founders launched very fast, gave their product in the hands of users, and asked for feedback. Based on that, they iterated many times and every time gave a better and better understanding of what the customers needed.

For example, the team initially planned to build the “Reviews” feature last. But customers were asking for this feature almost immediately and were willing to pay for it. Thus, Plai prioritized it and delivered it much faster than it initially planned to.

Gradeup is India’s largest online preparation platform for competitive exams with a strong user base of more than 20 million exam aspirants. Through Live classes and emphasizing a structured methodology i.e. a daily study plan, they’ve made exam preparation highly effective; while optimizing the process by connecting students with peers pursuing similar objectives to facilitate the exchange of notes, clear doubts, and take better preparatory decisions.

Development of a Community – With the core belief that ‘people prepare better when they prepare together‘, Gradeup focuses on developing exam-specific communities, which are driven by, and focused towards, aspirants. It is the first & only Indian online platform to build a highly engaging community of expert mentors and students; where an aspirant can ask doubts, share updates, and interact with mentors and peers to develop a 360-degree perspective on every topic in the most engaging manner.

    Gradeup – Target Market Size

The EdTech industry can be divided into segments such as the K12 segment, which can be further classified into two categories i.e. KG to 7th class & 8th to 12th; followed by the Test preparation segment and upscaling (vocational training). Within these segments, Gradeup caters to the Test preparation segment of the market. The approximate market size of Test prep is 35 Million students. And Gradeup is one of the biggest players in the market with more than 20 Million registered students.

More students are now gravitating toward online education. More than anything, this short term situation is increasing the trust of students and their parents in EdTech. The impact of the current situation on EdTech, in the long run, will be its increased acceptance as an alternative to current offline options.

Hiring is the most critical part of an organization when it is scaling at a pace. The following three things play a very important role in the company’s hiring process:

    • Culture fit
    • Passion for work and the right attitude
    • Depth in the area of expertise

Current Company Size: The total number of employees in the organization is 330+.

    How was Gradeup Started?

Gradeup forayed into the Edtech and test preparation space in 2013. At that time, it worked with publishers and large institutes to mobilize their content and deliver it in an online, mobile-friendly manner for students preparing for competitive examinations.

While this focused on utilizing content in the online space, it was clearly not enough. The learning process lacked the right level of engagement and was, thus, ineffective in improving learning outcomes. It required better direction and planning to help the aspirants.

The team realized that by focusing on learning outcomes, they can contribute significantly to this space and to a student’s preparation journey. And this inspired the founders to solve this problem and fulfill the existing gaps to make online preparation more effective than ever.

“We did tons of student interviews to understand the problems that they face. While doing it we became more and more confident that these issues can be solved easily with the help of Technology. And that’s when we decided to launch Gradeup.”, recalls Vibhu Bhushan, Co-founder of Gradeup.

Shobhit, Vibhu, and Sanjeev, co-founders of Gradeup, had conversations with all major VCs before they got funded. Their pitch was based on the fact that EdTech as an industry has huge potential. Access to high-quality education across all segments of the country is an area of growth and has huge market potential, especially in tier 2, 3, and 4 cities. The question they addressed was “how we can come up with a unique approach that differentiates us in the market and helps us scale faster”.

“During that period, we were in conversation with various investors who all agreed to the fact that sooner or later technology will act as an agent of change in the education sector. And it was just a matter of right time and product that could initiate the disruption process for the offline education model. Our goal was to revolutionize online live learning and emerge as a pioneer in this segment.”, said Vibhu Bhushan.

    Gradeup Classroom

Taking this a notch above is Test Series, which gives students access to mock tests based on the latest exam patterns along with previous years’ question papers and fresh questions regularly created by expert faculty. Students get provided with-

    • Detailed solutions
    • An in-depth analysis of their performance
    • They’re all India Rank and Scorecard so that they know where they stand.

It also has an education news portal – NewsEd by Gradeup, which is aimed to help the community to stay updated with all the latest news in the sector.

Gradeup classroom has the following features:

    The Learning Process:

The course begins with a Live class on the relevant topics. This is followed by the students accessing ‘Mind Maps’, a unique concept through which students get to recap what they have gone through in digestible nuggets of information, resulting in complete revision in the least amount of time possible. Students are then given chapter-wise quizzes to test how much they have retained, and the answers to these quizzes are discussed along with expert faculty for greater conceptual clarity.

    Systematic Study Plan:

Offered to the students, the team focuses on creating a plan not just for completing the syllabus, but finishing it in a convenient way while remaining motivated throughout– something that they will get hooked onto and can follow within and outside of class hours.

    Unique and Evolving Framework:

Strengthening the collective model through the contribution of each participant is a mantra Gradeup follows dearly.

    Verified Peer-to-Peer Learning:

Gradeup has managed to build a learner’s community of sorts, which is now at the heart of the learning process. Students interact with other students and mentors to solve doubts and ask questions to enrich their learning experience. As much as 95 percent of doubt-solving happens peer-to-peer!

    Validation Mechanism:

What sets them apart is that the company has multiple fact-checking processes in place on its platform to filter answers based on their quality. In this way, students are only consuming material that is fact-checked and relevant, so that they do not end up misguiding each other unintentionally.

    Building Confidence:

A constant knowledge-focused engagement also builds a sense of camaraderie, confidence, and healthy competition, which is extremely important for comprehensive personality development especially if they are aiming to crack prestigious competitive examinations.

    Mentor:

When students enroll for a course on Gradeup Classroom, a personal mentor is assigned to them who is available 24×7 to instantly resolve any doubts that they may have.

Also, Gradeup has a dedicated cross-function Student Success Team that-

    • Manages core elements of quality content, the comprehensive study plan, constant feedback, and updates, amongst others.
    • Evaluates every piece of this data puzzle and link together the major internal and external stakeholders – aspirants, faculty, and parents – to establish a transparent communication system.
    • Keeps the parents informed, the teachers cognizant and the students motivated. Every stakeholder is kept abreast of the progress through virtual Report Cards.
    • It addresses students’ challenges, either academic or technical, sends reminders for daily academic activity, monitors students’ performance, and organizes live online parent-teacher meetings twice a month.
    • Lastly, for faculty, the team manages the interface that they can view to check overall batch performance, student-level information, and activity-level information.

    Gradeup – Startup Challenges

When Vibhu forayed into the Edtech and test preparation space with his business partners, in 2013, he worked with publishers and large institutes to mobilize their content and deliver it in an online, mobile-friendly manner for students preparing for competitive examinations.

His low point at that time was that they made a business model that couldn’t scale. Also, they were quite dependent on external partners; for whom it was too early to change and evolve.

“However, the high point in my entrepreneurial journey was having the realization that our learning processes needed to have the right engagement levels. And this could be done by upgrading our pedagogy systems and product by making them effective and interactive.”, said Vibhu Bhushan, co-founder of Gradeup.

He also realized that students prepare better when they prepare together. Hence, the co-founders decided that moving forward they will have a community-based model where verified peer to peer learning and validation mechanisms builds trust and reliability towards the content and the platform.

    Fittr – Industry Details

    Fittr – Idea and Inspiration

Over the years, Fittr has evolved to become the platform it is today, and it will continue to do so to deliver holistic fitness – for the body, mind, and beyond.

It all began as small a WhatsApp group in 2014 by Jitendra Chouksey (JC), who is also the founder and CEO, to help his friends get in shape. The other co-founders Jyoti Dabas, Rohit Chattopadhyay, Bala Krishna Reddy, and Sonal Singh, joined JC soon after. In the same year, given the overwhelming response and positive feedback, they quickly transformed into a Facebook group, called S.Q.U.A.T.S. The group was based on the “Systematic Quantitative Unified Aesthetic Transformation System”, which helped more people be a part of the fitness revolution with a safe space that is free of judgment. The Facebook community helped them, and others to understand the specific requirements all of which could be addressed with quantified nutrition.

In 2016 with an initial investment of INR 90K, the platform was launched. As like-minded people, each of them wanted to provide a safe and judgment-free platform where anyone could learn, transform, inspire, and explore their career opportunities in fitness. Later, they created the fundamental training methodology to prove that anyone can get fit with the knowledge of Quantified Nutrition.

Then in 2018, the team launched the Fittr application with an aim to democratize fitness. Today, Fittr is successfully functioning as a tech-enabled community-first health and fitness platform headquartered in Pune.

“I am happy to state that we have been profitable since inception and are one of the largest fitness & nutrition communities on Facebook with over 600k members” – says Sonal Singh, Co-founder, Fittr.

Initially, the name of the organization was S.Q.U.A.T.S, “Systematic Quantitative Unified Aesthetic Transformation System”. In March 2019, the team rebranded the company’s name to FITTR as it is more reflective of the market that they aspire to serve. They believe that this name has more impact on peoples’ minds and gives fitness aficionados a psychological push towards staying fit whenever they see the app icon on their smartphones.

Fittr has a subsidiary called the Institute of Nutrition and Fitness Sciences (INFS) which was established with the intent of imparting comprehensive and practical knowledge in health and fitness by one of the Co-founders, Jyoti Dabas.

INFS provides a range of online courses with the aim of promoting scientific learning, research initiatives, and revolutionizing the health and wellness industry. INFS is on a mission to provide its students with a best-in-class education in nutrition and fitness. Fittr Co-founder
    Sonal Singh – Co-founder, Fittr

Fittr’s co-founders include Jitendra Chouksey, an IT engineer, Jyoti Dabas, a former Citigroup analyst, Rohit Chattopadhyay, who comes in with a diverse sales and marketing experience across banking & various other sectors, and Bala Krishna Reddy, a former developer at Ford Motors. They came together to form Fittr with a common goal to provide a safe and judgment-free platform for people to learn, transform, inspire, and explore career opportunities in fitness.

A little brief about Fittr’s co-founders is as below:

    Jitendra Chouksey

A first-generation entrepreneur, Jitendra Chouksey (JC) is a graduate as an IT Engineer and worked for more than eight years in the tech sector at companies like IBM, L&T, and Mphasis. The sedentary lifestyle started taking a toll and as a lifelong fitness enthusiast, he wasn’t content with his personal fitness level. He delved deeper into educating himself & experimented on his own body. He came to realize that the secret to fitness wasn’t as complicated as it seemed: it was based on the science of quantified nutrition. Having transformed himself, he went on to win the title of Muscle Mania Muscle Model 2015. He gained the attention of his friends and colleagues who all wanted to learn how to transform.

Rather than keep his fitness discovery a secret or charge people, he started training them for free first on WhatsApp and then Facebook. When the demand became overwhelming, he trained coaches with the hope that they could train others and spread the knowledge. Before JC knew it, his simple ambition to help others was the genesis of an entrepreneurial adventure called Fittr.

    Jyoti Dabas

Jyoti Dabas is a Co-founder at Fittr. After securing an MBA from IIM-Calcutta, Jyoti went on to complete an Electronics and Communications Engineering degree from the University of Warwick. She is also a Doctor of Naturopathy, Certified Personal Trainer, and a Certified Life Coach.

She is also Founder and CEO at INFS – India’s largest Online Fitness Certification Institute. As a founding member, her role is to uphold the quality of the courses offered by INFS and to ensure the company lives up to the expectations of the stakeholders. She aims to increase the number of quality Fitness Professionals in the country and create opportunities where these professionals can earn at par with other service industries

Apart from her many academic achievements, Jyoti is an entrepreneur at heart. Having served more than seven years in the field of Banking and Consulting in London and India, she stepped out of her comfort zone to explore her interests in the Fitness Industry.

    Rohit Chattopadhyay

Rohit Chattopadhyay is the Co-Founder and Director of Fittr. The foundation of Rohit’s entrepreneurial journey with Fittr was laid when he joined Fittr’s Facebook community. He began implementing everything that was recommended in the group.  With time, Rohit witnessed his health and fitness improve by leaps and bounds. This became a turning point for him, as he realized fitness was his true calling.  After a year, Rohit moved to Pune and became a Fittr coach, and eventually a part of the founding team of Fittr.

Rohit is closely involved in the branding and marketing efforts of Fittr. Prior to joining Fittr, Rohit was working in the marketing department of IBA Systems and Automations. He has an Electrical Engineering degree, and a Master’s degree in Marketing.

    Bala Krishna Reddy

Bala Krishna Reddy Dabbedi is the Co-Founder and Director of Fittr. He comes with a decade-long experience in technology and fitness.  Bala began his career in technology at large corporations in India and the United States. This helped him gain insight into international markets.

With a Master’s degree in Science from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, he was part of the original team that helped create the Fittr website. During that period, Bala was working with Ford Motors in the US. However, he understood that Fittr was something special and recognized his interest in fitness to move to India.

Fittr – Business Model and Revenue Model

Fittr acts as a one-stop-shop for all health and fitness needs and offers a freemium model to all its users.

    1. It provides free access to diet and training tools, over 5000 healthy recipes, live fitness sessions with experts, Q&A with coaches, and connects users to a community of over three million members comprising fitness experts and enthusiasts.
    2. The users pay a small premium only when they require a personalized nutrition and exercise plan to reach their health and fitness goals. The customized plans are provided by one of Fittr’s 500 plus certified coaches, along with in-depth consultation calls as well as weekly check-ups on their progress via the app. Almost all of Fittr’s coaches come from the Fittr community and have their own stories of transformation.

Fittr has packages starting from INR 6,500 for three months, and the fee depends on the trainer and the time period of the package. And this is where Fittr earns its revenues from.

Fittr – Launch & Marketing Strategies

In 2014 itself, understanding the different needs of a body, the founding team launched S.Q.U.A.T.S, a Facebook group based on the “Systematic Quantitative Unified Aesthetic Transformation System”. The group was started to help more people be a part of the fitness revolution with a safe space that is free of judgment.

The Facebook community helped them, and others understand the specific requirements all of which can be addressed with Quantified Nutrition. They ran the community for free for 1-2 years. By the end of December 2015, the group had 50,000 people. What the team observed was that people wanted personal training. That’s when they realized that it is the human touch, mentorship, and accountability that people needed.

Thus in 2016, they launched a website called SQUATS later rebranded as Fittr. It was modeled like an e-commerce platform for fitness, except, instead of products, there were fitness coaches. This strategy worked well for Fittr and helped it capture and retain its initial users. Fittr has grown 100% organically through word-of-mouth.

The team has been working using this key mantra which has worked well for them, since the start of the company. What attracts Fittr’s customers are –

    • Quantifiable Results: Fittr’s unique methods and personalized approach are the game-changers that helps users achieve their fitness goals faster
    • Human Touch: Fittr’s experts and qualified coaches go the extra mile to help the customers
    • Community: Fittr makes sure that whoever enrolls is not alone in his/her journey. They can connect with other fitness enthusiasts, share stories, and get inspired through Fittr’s three million strong and inclusive community

Fittr is a coach-led, community-first platform that consistently keeps on coming up with exciting fitness challenges and campaigns to keep its users engaged. Fittr’s flagship Transformation Challenge’s (TC) 14th edition was recently launched in August and as part of the same, it launched a digital campaign – #NoMoreExcuses to create further excitement amongst its users. The campaign’s aim was to urge people to drop all excuses, stop procrastinating and embark on their fitness journey to become a fitter and better version of themselves. As part of #NoMoreExcuses, Fittr conceptualized ad films highlighting how conveniently excuses act as obstacles for people who are taking their first step towards a fitter life.

    Fittr’s Digital Campaign #NoMoreExcuses

Transformation Challenge is Fittr’s flagship recurring event that aims to encourage fitness enthusiasts to transform their lives and be a better and healthier version by competing with themselves. It not only aims to encourage people to push boundaries and begin their fitness journeys but also intends to inculcate the fact that fitness is a journey in which one competes with his own self and not anyone else. It also stresses building a sense of discipline, consistency, and diligence in them to achieve their fitness goals. The challenge requires contestants to share a video every week in the specified format to showcase their week-on-week progress for 12 weeks. The participants are evaluated on multiple factors such as muscle gain, fat loss, and consistency from the past transformation challenges.

    Fittr – Challenges Faced

Whenever you start a business, you experience your own share of ups and downs, face challenges and struggles but never stop hustling. Fittr went through the same phase. Initially, when the team was putting the foundation of Fittr, many people didn’t understand the business model nor did they think that fitness and health was a big enough market to address.

The founders were advised to launch or endorse complementary products or even use advertisements to monetize their community. Promoting products would be a hypocritical stance which they didn’t want to take. However, their fundamental philosophy is to democratize fitness and show everyone how accessible fitness is. Also, the community they have built has been done so with the utmost commitment to quality and scientific-based knowledge. Taski – Target Market Size

Taski works in the productivity domain. The market is growing highly as more and more people get on internet and want to sort their busy lives.

Some research shows that every person takes around 70 important decisions and over 35,000 simple decisions daily. Surely, this domain is going to expand much more in coming years with daily increasing internet users.

    How was Taski Started?

Taski originated from a simple problem. We all make decisions! Sometimes it’s as simple as tea vs coffee and can be as complex as deciding new product features.

Taski founder Mohit personally faced a lot of problems in making decisions on which framework to choose, which companies to apply to, and which features to build first for his ideas. He did some research and read some brilliant articles on taking decisions.

After browsing through multiple articles, he found there are so many frameworks that work perfectly in certain scenarios like SWOT and Eisenhower Matrix.

Unfortunately, there are no proper tools for people to use frameworks to make decisions. Mohit Khare did some research and asked around many product managers on how they make decisions. Many did use such frameworks, but mostly on excel or on paper, which is not the best solution. He even got a very good response and interest in the idea of improving decision making.

Finally, he decided to build something clean and simple which almost anyone can use across any platform (web/mobile). Mohit’s idea for the MVP was to keep it as simple and intuitive as possible, give users a way to make and share their decisions.

Since the product was focused around increasing productivity with decision making and at its core, it uses the task model, Taski came up as a short and subtle name for the product. Most importantly, Mohit could find a good domain for this.

The logo again is highly inspired by the task and checklist model. Since essentially Taski uses a checklist to get work done, the logo signifies that with 2 symbolic checkmarks.

    Taski – Startup Challenges

One of the challenges was actually figuring out which frameworks and decision tools people actually use and how do they use it right now. You need to find the problem before building a solution. There were minor tech blockers as well but that is always there and you get past them eventually.

About Adapty and How it Works

Adapty is a service for analyzing and growing mobile in-app subscriptions. The company builds a set of tools that help mobile developers and marketers to increase the conversion rate to paid subscribers and manage subscription infrastructure.

“Only in the App Store, there are over 2M apps and 90% of them are monetized with an in-app subscription. 5 years ago when we were working on Easy Ten (mobile language learning app), market was 10 times smaller than now. So we see that subscription is dominating the mobile market”, says Vitaly Davydov, Adapty founder.

    Adapty Features
    Adapty Features

Adapty.io is a service for growing mobile subscriptions. It has the following features:

    • Quickly deploy in-apps with mobile SDK
    • Increase revenue with A/B testing for paywalls
    • Convert more subscribers with Promo campaigns
    • Analyze recurring payments with Dashboard

It also integrates with 3rd party analytics and attribution services and forward subscription events to them.

    Adapty – Target Market Size

According to App Annie, 94% of top-250 apps are monetized with in-app subscriptions. Only on iOS mobile, apps have made $4.6B in revenue and the number of subscribers has grown 5 times for the last 5 years. So mobile subscriptions are dominating the market. It’s pretty hard to guess what the next instrument will be for mobile monetization, but it’s for sure that it’d be recurring. Such payments are profitable both for mobile developers and Apple/Google, remember that vendors take 30% cut.

    How was Adapty Started?

Adapty was started as an internal product for solving the co-founder’s own needs. One day, they realized that there’s a market for the product! They’ve seen some companies appearing with similar products and decided to join the race. The founders talked with 12 mobile devs companies and they all confirmed a need for features they’d like to develop. So, Vitaly and Kirill started Adapty.

“After 4 months, we had an MVP and got our first customer. After that, we acquired 5 more and started to work with them very tightly so that they use Adapty on a daily basis”, recalls Vitaly.

    Adapty – Product/Services

Adapty works in two modes. The first one is available without any coding and from a Free plan. Add App Store Connect credentials and you’ll get detailed analytics and reports. Real work starts with the SDK installation. It’s written in pure Swift (Kotlin for Android) and weights 100Kb.

Implementing subscriptions in the app is really a pain, it requires a server to validate receipt, handling events from Apple, linking events to a user, and finally store it somewhere. It usually takes at least 3 months to correctly deploy subs without losing data. But with Adapty, SDK companies can deploy in-app subscriptions super easy in the app and sync subscribers between platforms including the web.

But this feature is just a start. The dealbreaker is paywall A/B testing. It allows customers to customize UI and change products on paywall without app release. Companies can tune pricing for different cohorts and grow revenue.

The last big feature is a promo campaign in push notifications. 97% of mobile app users are freemium, but some of them are willing to subscribe, but they need a little push. Sending a limited discount subscription offer might be a nice thing to do.

Adapty is a one-stop tool developer and marketers need to work with a subscription. Some features can be replaced via 3rd party services, but getting all in one place when it’s related to the economy is important for a business.
