    Deepinder’s initial hurdle came from his family, who were reluctant to leave his stable job at the firm and join the startup journey and lifestyle. Deepinder’s wife, Kanchan Joshi, whom he met at IIT, was reluctant initially but later supported his new lifestyle completely. After establishing the startup in big cities, the Zomato owner hired Gunjan Patidar, another IITian, to assist the team in Operations. He had a hectic time running FoodieBay.com since the concept was unique and unknown to people at that time, and difficulties were inevitable. He had to face numerous entrepreneurial problems to convert his hard work into success. In August 2011, Info Edge invested $1 million in FoodieBay.com, which was when Zomato founder Deepinder Goyal and his team changed the company’s name to Zomato.com. The funding was a morale booster that prompted Deepinder and Pankaj to quit their jobs at Bain and Company and dedicate all their time to the growth of Zomato.

    After this, the food delivery and ordering trend took India by storm, turning the tide for Zomato.     Zomato co-founder and CEO, Deepinder Goyal, has launched a new health and wellness startup called ‘Continue’ on 21st October 2024. This venture is focused on health tracking and mental wellness. The website, Continue.com, is still in a secretive “stealth mode,” so not many details are available yet. The company, called Upslope Advisors Pvt Ltd, was registered in April 20.     As per reports, the food delivery platform and Zomato’s competitor, Swiggy is close to finalizing a deal to sponsor the fourth season of Shark Tank India season 4. Swiggy has requested that Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal not return as an investor, according to Goyal. This decision highlights the growing competition between the two food delivery companies.

    “I unfortunately can’t go back because Swiggy sponsored Shark Tank this time and kicked me out,” Goyal said at the ET Startup Awards 2024 on 5th October, 2024.

    “Apparently, that’s what I heard. They (Swiggy) said that this is the sponsorship, and DP (Deepinder Goyal) can’t be on the show,” he added.

    Deepinder Goyal – Controversies

    In March 2025, a public clash happened between Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal and Zepto CEO Aadit Palicha over the quick commerce market. Goyal said the industry was losing around INR 5,000 crore every quarter, and blamed Zepto for more than half of it.

    Palicha replied on LinkedIn, calling Goyal’s claims “verifiably untrue.” He said Zepto’s financials would prove him wrong, but still showed respect for Goyal, calling it possibly a mistake.

    Later, Palicha accused a rival CFO of spreading lies to investors and using social media bots to damage Zepto’s image.

    This dispute shows the rising tension in the fast-growing quick commerce space in India.

    Deepinder Goyal started a debate on 20th November 2024 by offering a Chief of Staff job with a strange condition. In this job, the applicants must pay INR 20 lakh to get the job, and there will be no salary at first. Goyal said this Chief of Staff job will give 10 times more learning than a two-year course at a top business school. Another benefit is working closely with him and some of the smartest people in consumer tech.

    The job post got mixed reactions on social media. Many users said it is unfair to talented people from less wealthy backgrounds who can’t pay INR 20 lakh upfront or cover their basic needs for a year.

    A day after this controversial Chief of Staff job post, Goyal said on 21st November 2024 that they got over 18,000 applications. He explained that the INR 20 lakh fee was just a way to filter candidates and wouldn’t actually be charged.

    An experienced nutritionist Rashida, could see that there are many loopholes that requires attention when it comes to nutrition in India.     Initially, 100 consumers were contacted in the city to ask them about comprehension of food labels and the importance of the information in making smart food choices. Results were eye-opening:

    • Almost half of daily calories (47%) are derived from carbohydrates with the numbers going as high as 70% in rural areas. Just 7% of daily calories coming from Protein as compared to the recommended 29%
    • The average consumption of calories from fruits is less than 40% of what EAT-Lancet recommends.
    • In general, Indians consume more of the unhealthier saturated fats like palm oil. The consumption of vanaspati (partially hydrogenated vegetable oil*) is known to have risen by 51% between 1993 and 94 and 2011–12.
    • 30% of the diet of rich urban people consists of processed foods. An average Indian household consumes more calories from processed foods than fruits.
    • Overall, dietary risks were responsible for 22% of all deaths and disabilities amongst adults.

    The above data clearly shows that the majority of the Indians have one or the other health hazard or many are at risk to develop ailments owing to wrong eating habits. Rashida knew that a huge difference can be made by helping and guiding the Indians to buy the right kind of packaged food items, that are healthy and have high nutritional value, which made her start ‘LabelBlind’ as a platform to simplify the comprehension of nutritional values of food for consumers.

    The product has had an extended test-run of over a year and has been validated for feedback from 30 leading food companies, nutritionists and the regulator itself. The response has been encouraging, translating into strong word of mouth for the company, and keen interest of stakeholders in the data intelligence and its application to industry practices and regulation policies.

When they initially started to work on the idea, there were no benchmarks that the trio as young entrepreneurs could set for themselves in 2018. The product that they were setting out to create was original and unique. Thus, as innovative founders, they had to ideate as much as possible.     Fastor started with its beta runs in October of 2019. They tested their systems at high footfall locations and were ready for a full-scale launch by January 2020. Fastor had done close to 5000+ orders by February 2020. they are now initiating their operations in the major world economies with major global gateways and are fully compliant to execute orders in international markets. Fastor is always looking for young talent that has the ability to think out of the box and to contribute with their expertise in the company.

    Now, they are looking forward to onboard over 2000+ new merchants in the next three months with a current rate of 20+ new onboardings per day. Due to the ongoing pandemic, the business is on halt. Once the pandemic stables, the market will come back to normal.

It is incorporated with advanced machine vision, a built-in HD camera which lets the user view the food. It also has Precise Thermal Control system so that the food doesn’t get burnt.

    With a diverse menu for food, Nymble can make everyday cooking less cumbersome. Lately, Nymble Labs has developed smart sous chef that prepares 80+ recipes on its own. User needs to select the recipe and ingredients required and Julia will prepare the selected recipes without any further instructions.

    Robot

    Get food served by robots in this restaurant in Chennai. Clad in red armour a robot sits on an iron throne while three saree clad robots carrying trays of food. Founded by Venkatesh Rajendran, a restaurateur, and Karthik Kannan, an architect in the year 2015, they do not actually replace waiters with robots. In fact, it is the waiters who control and regulate the movements of the robots using an app.

    SP Robotics

    SP Robotics is an ed-tech startup that provides robotic education to students from age 12-17 under the brand name Kidobotikz. Four robotic enthusiasts, who are members of this community, has developed India’s first food serving robot called BOB (Butler ‘O’ Bistro), equipped with ultrasonic sensors.     India is a market where our homegrown companies are competing fiercely with multinational giants. For Ola there is Uber, for Flipkart there is Amazon and Swiggy is competing with ubereats. One thing which greatly differentiate Indian companies from MNCs is the service quality. We all agree to the fact that Amazon and Uber provide better customer service than their competitors. This was also found in a recent survey by redsheer, where NPS score of MNCs were higher. ✔️

    I was talking to my friend who is currently working with Ola and he said that sometimes he has to work for Foodpanda when workload is higher (If you don’t know ola acquired Foodpanda this year). I instantly asked him if he can provide me Foodpanda coupons. He laughed it off and said, “why do I need a coupon when Foodpanda is already giving away food for free”.

    After the call, I checked the app and I found this 😍

    I was really happy after seeing this, I will save money and time, as I won’t have to look in the big 4 (Zomato, Foodpanda, Ubereats and Swiggy) for coupons and offers. FoodPanda was my goto place.

    Here is what I found one day! 🥧 Pastries in 5 rupees!

    So we ordered like 25 pastries and we had party in the office that day. We could only order one item in one order but there wasn’t any restriction on the number of orders. 25 different delivery boys delivered those 25 packet worth 5 rupees (after discount).

    Inefficiency kills me! Even though we enjoyed pastries, It was really surprising that, foodpanda or any other food delivery app don’t have any option to club the orders if two orders are from point A to point B. What’s more funny is that the a delivery guy who is 5 km away is assigned to pick an order from a restaurant who is just 800 mts away!

    This clearly shows that foodpanda wants to increase it number of order no matter what, probably to show investors, raise more funding and burn more! This events reminds of one business leasson from ashish hemrajani, founder BookmyShow!

    In StartupTalky, I learned a trick to check click data of any bit.ly or goo.gl url shortener. Just add “+” sign after the url. Foodpanda send a goo.gl URL whenever you place an order (to track status of delivery guy).

    [I don’t understand any company will leave one real data point open?] I checked the data if the offers had done a great work, and yes they did. I am sure the team was able to increase the number of orders at least 3 fold! Congrats! You are now ready to raise more funds! 💸💰

    Well, this the joy of ordering food for so cheap was very short lived. with scale came problems!

    Was I the only one? NO!

    Just to know that if Foodpanda is just messing with or with everyone, I checked their Facebook page to see and in a post with more than 170 comments not a single comment was positive. Just like me, other customers were also having all sorts of issue with the order. It was very hard for Foodpanda support team to handle all these queries.

    What people think about Big 4, Food Delivery startups

    I conducted a poll in StartupTalky to understand what people think of all food delivery startups.While swiggy stands at 157, food panda just got 8 votes!

    What was the matter?

    To know the reason, I again talked to my friend and here is what I got to know.

    After the acquisition, Ola had announced that it would invest $200 million – over Rs 1,400 crores – in Foodpanda to elevate its market presence. Discount was one easy way to get new users and engage existing users. So a campaign “The Crave Party” was launched to relaunched Foodpanda. It was launched across all major cities and all discounts were given by Foodpanda only (restaurant was not bearing any cost for discounts, they just have to pay 23% commission on the original cost which Foodpanda anyways takes as an aggregator).

    Now to fulfill the orders, Foodpanda started to recruit 60,000 delivery men by offering a substantially higher salary than anyone in the hyperlocal delivery business but solwly they started reducing the salary from INR 1320/day to INR 40/delivery which comes around INR 400-450/day. Here is what happned next (in diagram).

    So you can see these are all operations are connected as a funnel. Also, we can see that foodtech startup is more about the operation than tech.

    Learnings  📖

    • Scale your business but not at the cost of customer satisfaction/happiness.
    • Things may go out of your control while you scale, always be prepared for that.
    • Treat your team well, be true with them. They are one who will stand with you when no one will.
    • Indians are understood to love offers and discount, but everyone on the planet expects a minimum level of service quality. Especially when you are in food delivery, No one likes free pizza when they are not hungry.
    • Marketing is important but it must be supported with the efficient operation and tech.
