  • National Startup Day: Industry Experts Share How Government Policies Can Empower India’s Startup Ecosystem

India has the third-largest startup ecosystem in the world. Startups in our country are playing an extremely important role in driving innovation, creating jobs, and boosting economic growth. Recognising the importance of startups, Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared 16th January as National Startup Day to celebrate the entrepreneurial spirit and innovation shaping the nation’s future.

While initiatives like Startup India have built a strong foundation, many industries still face unique challenges. These challenges need targeted policy interventions. This National Startup Day 2025, StartupTalky brings together insights from industry leaders, highlighting what they think could better support startups and drive growth in their industries. By addressing these needs, the government can help startups succeed in local and global markets.

    Electric Vehicle Industry Growth

Nemin Vora, Founder and CEO of Odysse Electric Vehicles, shared, “We believe that EV sectors, especially the two-wheeler space, will continue to be a priority sector. This optimism comes from the shared goal of making transportation sustainable. We trust that the government will bring in incentives for both manufacturers and consumers, infrastructure development for EV charging, and policies to encourage research and development for the betterment of the EV space.

To better support startups in particular, and drive growth in the electric vehicle industry, we believe that the following policy changes and implementations would be highly beneficial:

    • Regulatory Support and Streamlined Approvals: Simplifying and expediting regulatory approvals for electric vehicles, along with implementing clear and consistent policies around safety and certification standards, would help startups enter the market more efficiently.
    • Promoting Incentives toward a Large Consumer Base: Government-backed awareness campaigns and direct consumer incentives, such as FAME-II subsidies or tax rebates for electric vehicle purchases instead of PLIs, would drive demand and encourage consumers to transition to electric mobility.
    • Access to Financing and Grants: Providing easier access to financial support through low-interest loans, grants, and venture capital funding for electric vehicle startups would enable companies to scale faster, invest in technology, and expand production capacities.
    • Reduced Taxes and Import Duties on EV Components: Lowering taxes and import duties on key electric vehicle components would make it more affordable for startups to produce electric vehicles domestically, which in turn would lower the overall cost of electric mobility.

These strategic policy changes would not only create a conducive environment for electric vehicle startups but also drive industry-wide growth, accelerate the transition to sustainable mobility, and help India meet its environmental goals.”

    • Incentivizing Investment in Startups
    • Supporting Employee Education and Awareness

By implementing some of these changes, the government could create a more vibrant ecosystem where startups are incentivized to grow and reward their teams through ESOPs while also ensuring that both entrepreneurs and employees are well supported in managing their equity and wealth.”

    EdTech Industry and AI Integration

Arpit Mittal, Founder and CEO of SpeakX, highlighted that the government has a unique opportunity to make technology a bridge, not a barrier. Policies that promote AI in education, like tax incentives for EdTech startups, could fuel innovation and bring personalized learning tools to underserved areas. Impact of Automation on the Workforce

Automation has had a significant impact on the workforce, especially in industries that rely on repetitive tasks. Advanced machines and software systems can perform these tasks with greater efficiency, replacing human workers. Although it reduces costs and boosts productivity, it can cause job displacement and economic inequality.

However, automation also creates opportunities for workers to upskill and transition to higher-skilled roles that require creativity and problem-solving. It must be ensured that all workers have the necessary skills and resources to thrive in this changing landscape.

Addressing the Negative Consequences of Technological Advancement

Technology advancements have provided countless benefits, but they have also had negative implications such as privacy concerns, environmental damage, and employment displacement. To mitigate these, people must be educated on the risks and promote responsible usage. Governments should enforce regulations on safety standards and transparency. Ethical implications and balance gains with individual rights must be considered.

Companies must design products sustainably, with safety in mind and ethical decision-making throughout. Lastly, collaboration between stakeholders is key to ensuring technology benefits everyone.

Staying Up-to-Date on the Latest Advancements in Technology

“Technological advances help businesses and individuals remain competitive in their respective domains. By utilizing cutting-edge tactics, strategies, and technologies, companies can dramatically enhance their consumer’s product user experiences. A great example is our feature-rich yet affordable smartwatches that feature a comprehensive health suite as well as the latest wearable tech, such as an AMOLED display and a heart rate sensor, allowing a more comprehensive smartwatch experience,” says Mr. Sanjay.

Here are the quotes shared by Mr. Ankur Singh based on the themes of the article:

Impact of Automation on the Workforce

“Technology has been acting as an enabler for so many years and it continues to do so. The role of technology is now enhanced, and every corporate is looking forward to bringing in efficiency and cost-benefit. In a way, yes, it has impacted some segments of the workforce but definitely, the introduction of automation has not impacted a large amount of the workforce. The impacted segment has at many times reskilled or is being utilized in other areas to further negate the adverse impact, if any. However, the benefits of using automation in many areas have reflected positive results over a period of time.”

Addressing the Negative Consequences of Technological Advancement

“First and foremost is identifying and scoping out the exact needs and the problem at hand for which we are looking for a solution. If the solution lies in technology, then to what extent it would be required and how it has to be implemented is the primary aspect of controlling the negative consequences.

Secondly, it is important to understand the benefits that may accrue to the corporate in the medium and long term and whether it would impact any segment of the workforce. It is important that the workforce is aligned/reskilled to ensure the hat impact is not sudden and it does not create confusion or incorrect image building of the corporate.

Lastly, one should ensure that technology is only to aid in efficiency, economies of scale etc but it cannot replace human talent and therefore, too much embracement of technology without appropriate thought processes would be over-killing the problem required.”

Staying Up-to-Date on the Latest Advancements in Technology

“In today’s fast-paced world, technology is advancing at a breakneck pace, and it’s more critical than ever for both employees and employers to stay current with the latest advancements. For employees, staying relevant and updated with the latest technology brings in effectiveness, and efficiency and at the same time improve their skillset, and advance in their careers. Employers who provide their employees with training and resources to keep up with technological advancements can create a more engaged and loyal workforce. For employers, staying up to date with technology can help them streamline processes, reduce costs, and improve the customer experience. In today’s digital age, it is important to keep pace with technological progress to seize opportunities and march ahead to make the company the best place to work.”

Identifying and Recruiting Skilled Individuals With Expertise in Advanced Technologies

“Hiring in technology has definitely been challenging since the covid times. Getting the right skill is time and cost-consuming. We would look for logical understanding, dedication, or commitment aspects in the candidate. We believe that if there are attributable skills that in the long run would make the candidate a high performer are these skill sets. The usage of technology is the second phase in identifying if the candidate is good at the particular technology. For these purposes, conducting some basic tests, interviews, and in particular reasoning abilities will enable decision-making,” says Mr. Ankur.

Impact of Automation on the Workforce

Automation can have a positive impact on the workforce in several ways. It can increase productivity, improve safety, reduce costs, enhance job satisfaction, and create new job opportunities. By automating routine tasks, workers can focus on more complex and strategic tasks, which can lead to increased efficiency and creativity. However, the impact of automation on the workforce is not evenly distributed and can lead to job displacement and changes in job requirements. It will be important to invest in education and retraining programs to help workers adapt to these changes and remain competitive in the job market.

Identifying and Recruiting Skilled Individuals With Expertise in Advanced Technologies

Structural issues suggest talent demand-supply for cutting-edge technologies will remain globally imbalanced in the near term. Although organizations are resorting to compensation corrections, bonuses, and flexible working location options, more creative measures are needed to attract top talent. Organizations will need to make intentional efforts to address talent-related challenges. They may transform in a variety of ways, including continuously investing in employees’ reskilling- upskilling, improving employer brand and workplace culture, looking at alternative talent sources (tier- 2/3 locations, acqui-hiring, partnering with academia, etc.), making employee referrals attractive, or creating programs to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion. In perspective, there is no unique strategy that can help companies win the war for top tech talent, rather it requires a mix of different tactics to identify and recruit skilled individuals.

According to a recent survey by ANSR, 65% of the leaders believe that providing a clear career path and growth opportunities is the best way to attract and retain talent. 55% of them have an increased focus on Employer Brand as a strategy to attract the best tech talent.

Staying Up-to-Date on the Latest Advancements in Technology

To stay up to date on the latest advancements in technology, individuals can attend industry events and conferences, follow industry leaders and experts on social media, join professional associations, read industry publications and blogs, and take online courses and training programs. These strategies provide access to industry-specific resources, education opportunities, and networking with peers and experts. By staying informed and knowledgeable about the latest trends and technologies, individuals can remain competitive in their careers and contribute to their organization’s success.

In podcasting, determining the specific technologies and skills may include audio editing, sound engineering, equipment handling, podcast hosting, content distribution, and analytics.

Before recruiting skilled individuals with expertise in cutting-edge technologies, one should always explore online communities, forums, and social media groups dedicated to podcasting and look for platforms like Reddit, Facebook groups, and specialized forums where podcasters and audio professionals gather. These communities can provide valuable insights, connections, and potential candidates. One should always remember to tailor their recruitment strategies to the unique requirements and challenges of podcasting technologies. There is an imperative need to stay informed about the latest trends, platforms, and tools in the industry to attract skilled individuals who can contribute to any podcasting endeavors.

Staying Up-to-Date on the Latest Advancements in Technology

“Speaking about technological advancements, we focus more on digital audio technology, which can be considered an extremely exciting space to be looking at. The primary reason is that it lowers the barrier of creation across a whole range of creators like writers and book publishers,” says Mr. Gautam.

Today, through voice synthesis, podcasters can record one chapter of a book while the rest of the book automatically gets processed utilizing the sample of that voice. Another major implementation of advanced technology is AI-based voice assistance/tech. It can be safely stated that this space is going to grow exceptionally fast in the next 3-4 years, given the rise in audio consumption and audio creation. However, while a lot of fundamentals of the technology are strong, there are also certain drawbacks in the technology at the present time, which results in the error rate, which is fairly high.

Mr. JP Mishra, Country Manager India- Newland AIDC

JP Mishra, Country Manager India, Newland AIDC
JP Mishra, Country Manager India, Newland AIDC

Here are JP Mishra’s views regarding the Impact of Automation on the Workforce for National Technology Day.

As automation and artificial intelligence continue to advance, there is growing concern about how these technologies will impact the workforce. Automation has made a significant impact on the workforce, both positive and negative. On the one hand, automation has led to increased productivity, efficiency, improved quality, and safety in many industries, allowing companies to produce more goods and services with fewer workforce.

Automation has led to job losses in certain sectors, such as manufacturing and assembly line work. On the other hand, automation has also created new job opportunities in fields such as technology, data science, analytics, and robotics. Additionally, it has led to the development of new industries and businesses.

The overall impact of automation is complex and varies by industry, job type, and location. In general, jobs that involve repetitive tasks or can be easily replaced by machines are more at risk, while jobs that require human skills such as creativity, problem-solving, and social interaction are less likely to be automated.

Automation also creates as many jobs as it destroys over time. Workers who can work with machines are more productive than those without them; this reduces both the costs and prices of goods and services and raise consumers’ living standards.

In the short term, the impact of automation may be low for workers of all education levels, but in the long run, the estimates show that those with lower education levels could be much more vulnerable to being displaced by machines.

“Government and Corporates need to work together to help people to adjust to these new technologies through retraining and career changes. A culture of adaptability and lifelong learning will be crucial for spreading the benefits of AI & robotics, especially with an aging population. STEM skills will be important for the workforce to take high-technology jobs that will arise out of AI & automation, said Mishra.”

Adopting automation speeds up decision-making, leading to a more efficient and streamlined candidate experience. Moreover, automation technologies, like AI, offer extensive benefits such as long-term cost savings, increased hiring speed, and enhanced visibility and insights. It’s essential to acknowledge the significance of automation in the hiring process and start exploring ways to implement it for better operational efficiency. The future of hiring has arrived, and it’s time to start leveraging automation to reap its benefits.”

    Conclusion
