Over the last two years the company has trained nearly 100 students under this initiative.

Kovai.co – The Idea and Startup Story

Saravana Kumar, Founder & CEO, Kovai.co was a Microsoft BizTalk Server Consultant for 10 years and during that time of building solutions for all their clients, he noticed there were some gaps in the BizTalk Server. He started off by building a solution to fill these gaps more as a passion in the year 2010. He presented the first version of the product to his peers at the MVP conference in the US and received very positive feedback. With the kind of positive feedback, he realized the importance of this solution in the commercial sense and decided to launch as a business. Within the first 2 months he was able to get his first customer all the way from Hongkong with whom he did not have any prior connection. Within the first three years of the launch, he was able to get about 150 customers and hence decided to go into the business full time & hire a team. Until the first three years he was running the company with a small 4-member team from the living room of his residence.

As the product started to grow both technically and commercially, he built & launched their second product Serverless 360 for managing the Azure platform in the year 2016.

Sometime in the year 2017 when the team was looking for a knowledge base solution to write and organize all their technical product documentation, they realized that there was not any suitable solution in the market to fit their needs and the ones that were there was very expensive. Thus, Saravana brainstormed with the team and decided to build a solution to solve this business problem there by launching their knowledge base solution Document360 in the year 2018.

Document360 is a knowledge base platform that is engineered for growing companies. It helps companies to instantly create an online self-service knowledge base for their customers or employees accessed either publicly or privately.

When the company was growing organically and the opportunity came to set up an engineering & marketing development center in India, back in 2013, Saravana ignored all the counsel from his peers to set up the facility in Bengaluru, Chennai or Hyderabad and started the office in Coimbatore.

The town Coimbatore was called Kovanputhur (pre independence days) with a shorter version called Kovai. The use of the word Kovai for Coimbatore is still in existence, and it has an emotional attachment to people of Coimbatore.

Hence when Saravana started the company, he registered the company name as “Kovai Limited” in the UK (in 2009) and “Kovai Systems India Pvt Limited” in India (in 2013). Even though the registered names were Kovai, the company was known as BizTalk360 (the first product) for a long time.

When the company was going through the re-branding exercise after evolving into a multi-product company, they decided to bring Kovai as the prominent brand name.

In 2018, they called the company Kovai.co.

In 2020, with continuous persistence, they managed to acquire the domain Kovai.com owned by its previous owner for nearly 20 years.

Their mission is to create a successful global technology product company out of their home city – Coimbatore.”

For Document360, this is also a vast adoption platform and basically anyone who needs documentation in SaaS or in On premise model is their target audience.

    Kovai.co – Customer Acquisition

The first activity they undertook once they got a prototype of the product was to reach out to all their connections (experts from technical writing community, CXOs of companies etc) requesting them to try out the product and share their valuable feedback. The feedback received were evaluated, prioritized, and then passed on to the engineering team for development. Their marketing teams had begun writing blogs on showcasing the use cases of the product thereby generating prospective leads from readers. The sales team would then showcase demos of the product to these prospects and encourage them to take a trial of the product so that they can use it firsthand to understand the value it creates. They were frugal in their approach as they did not want to spend too much money and resources until the first 100 customers were acquired.

    Kovai.co – Challenges Faced

In any business typically challenges are with people, like core people leaving at wrong times, wrong hires, people you trusted leave and they take away a few of your core members etc. These challenges will continue to remain and it’s the passion the founder has for building products and solving business user problems that drives the startup forward. Its also has the ability to impact so many people’s lives and create something big in the community, especially in Coimbatore which is a tier two city & the founders’ hometown. Moreover, challenges are never permanent. Any adversity that comes your way will subside over time. They have lost some crucial members at critical moments, but if they look back, it’s a short-term pain. There will be struggle for a while but eventually things will turnaround.

    Kovai.co – Marketing

    MotionGility – Founders and team

Himanshu Chaturvedi and his childhood friend Komal Kokate came together to set up MotionGility in 2015.

Himanshu graduated from Cambridge University with a Diploma in Animation and a Degree in Education. His love for creating animated videos led him to put his best at work. Currently at MotionGility as the Founder & Director, he leads the production unit.

Komal holds a Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Science from Acropolis Institute. She looks after requirements and deliverables at MotionGility.

After college, Komal went on work with an MNC, while Himanshu was working with an animation studio. However, Himanshu soon quit his job due to a lack of space for creativity and increasingly monotonous work. Around the same time, Komal was keen to start her entrepreneurship journey and joined hands with Himanshu to start MotionGility. However, soon due to lack of funds it became hard for them to sustain themselves. Hence, Komal joined CSC and parallelly kept working for MotionGility in her early mornings and late nights. Meanwhile, her father passed away and she decided to quit her job as she wanted to dedicate herself fully to her entrepreneurship journey.

MotionGility currently has a team of 27 employees, 22 in Indore, 3 in Australia, 2 in the USA. Their work culture is pretty feasible with flexible working hours to relieve their staff of stress. Besides, they also believe in offering the team, recreational activities every Saturday, which energizes the team and boosts efficiency. Every team member at MotionGility is considered and treated as a significant other, and all are very closely knit.

    How was MotionGility Started

In the year 2015, Himanshu was striving hard to showcase his creativity. He was also working, and he realized that all this is taking a toll on his creativity. That’s when he got an urgent project. Himanshu was ready with it in less than 48 hours, and every video was to be showcased during India vs. South Africa cricket match, held in Indore, in the year 2015. A massive audience witnessed his work, his efforts, and that was the moment, the inspiration for his startup. A subtle push from his childhood friend Komal, who is also the co-founder of the company, made it all possible.

As Himanshu started working in the video production field, he realized that small companies or businesses that are locally known lack proper marketing channels for their products and services. Besides, their marketing budget is confined to small numbers, unlike the giant/ established companies. Consequently, these local companies hire agencies that barely have a proper setup, for their marketing. Such agencies fail to promote companies and businesses. Rather they contribute to demoting. In order to address this gap, Himanshu came up with the idea of explainer videos. These ideas have been realized as an ideal solution to solve marketing issues.

Initially, I spoke to Komal, my childhood friend, my sister Hema and a very close friend Rajat. I also discussed the idea with another brother-like mentor Sudhir Sir. All four of them liked the idea and were all set to support me to the core. Komal was working in an MNC then. She helped with the insights of the MNCs that such videos can be used for training purposes. However, one problem that arose was how would the market be convinced for these videos.

But, a major challenge in the process was to convince the market players about the efficiency of explainer videos. Nevertheless, with a strong conviction, MotionGility emerged to be a successful player in the video production industry. Today besides many small companies, MotionGility is also handling projects for brands like ITC, Harley Davidson, and Airtel.

Since MotionGility is into motion graphics, it justifies the ‘Motion’ part of their brand name, while ‘Gility’ is derived from the word’ ability.’ From there, MotionGility has come into being. The logo has an M and G, which are filled with eye-pleasing colours with a play button that signifies motion/movement.

MotionGility’s tagline is ‘What we promise we deliver’, and the team is pretty true to that.

MotionGility – Business Model and Revenue Model

MotionGility operates in a service-based industry. Their revenue model varies as per the project. They focus more on the requirement of the client and alter things as per that. From gathering the client’s requirements and scriptwriting to delivering the video, MotionGility offers everything. In general, their price range for explainer video varies from 500 USD to 10000 USD.

    MotionGility – User Acquisition

Initially, Himanshu created videos on the products that were already present in the market. Along with the same, he tagged the audience, and through that, he was able to attract the market towards his videos. The audience was curious to know more, and there he saw a chance to build his portfolio through it.

Himanshu had a humble beginning where he charged minimal prices from his audience. First, they launched on Youtube along with Freelance platforms and then moved to social media platforms and content marketing, that’s how they got their clients.

Our strategy was that we focused on the requirement of the market than the requirement of the client. This way, the client was able to draw the audience towards his brand

    MotionGility – Startup Challenges

Getting the initial clients is always a challenging task. Himanshu and Komal initially had to work free of cost to create a customer base. The second challenge was that they did not have a team. Being a startup getting quality manpower to join them was not easy for the founders. Due to a lack of proper infrastructure, many were not willing to join the company. To solve the issue the company was moved into an office situated at one of the best locations of the city.

we hired an employee who wasn’t as skilled as we were expecting. We then looked for reasons as to why we weren’t able to convince people to work with us. That’s when we realized that the infrastructure might be a reason.

MotionGility even had to miss some of its clients due to lack of manpower. This made Himanshu and Komal tie up with different animation institutes that offered them, interns. Himanshu trained these interns and formed a team. Nevertheless, the projects were done by Himanshu so as to retain the high-end quality of the projects, and the company offered its services at a quite low cost to attract customers

The first strategy I implemented was offering a high-quality video at a lower cost. But, the high quality of the video spoke for itself and left me with a network of more clients. This way I could recover my cost and have a great network in the market. A friend of mine, Rahul, who is also a strategic partner today, has guided me through times.

    MotionGility – Awards & Recognitions

    • Awarded by the Govt of MP (Traffic) with a Recognition Award.
    • MotionGilitys’ story was covered by Cityfeed, a local journal.
    • The journey of MotionGility has been shared on numerous platforms.

    MotionGility – Future Plans

Currently, MotionGility has also captured Germany and other overseas markets. MotionGility’s strategy remains clever. From a tier 2 city, it delivers a quality worth appreciating in the global market, at lower costs.  In the near future, MotionGility aims to broaden its animation services to TV and more businesses.

  • Bootstrapped SaaS Startups and Tips for Bootstrapping your Startup

The concept of bootstrapping a business is nothing new. The term originates from the concept of “pulling yourself up by your own”. In the business world, the term generally refers to: “Financing and growing your business without the need for external assistance in the form of capital investment.”

In other words, it’s the “I’m doing it my way” approach to building a business. There’s a buzz today in the SaaS universe around bootstrapping. The wind has changed in some way and has spurred some conversation on the topic. That’s why I we bring to you the 5 best tips for bootstrapping your Startup.

Venture capital funding is at an all-time high in India. In 2017, Indian companies received VC/private equity funding to the tune of $17.6 billion, with Japan’s Softbank investing nearly a quarter of that amount in Flipkart, Paytm, and OYO.

It would appear as if nearly every tech-based start-up is backed by VC funds these days and if you want to make it to the big leagues, you need VC money. But a closer look reveals that this claim is not quite true. Bootstrapping may not only be a viable alternative to VC funding, but it might also actually be your ticket to startup success. So, take a look at the 7 bootstrapped SaaS startups who successfully secured bootstrapping.

5 Best Tips for Bootstrapping your Startup

    1. Identify What Kind Of SaaS You Are

There are two major SaaS sales models:

    Low-Touch and High-Touch sales model –

    Low-touch

    Low-touch SaaS is about volume.

    • Your product costs $10 to $500 per month
    • People need very little interaction with your team to become customers
    • Your landing page call-to-action is “Sign up for a free trial”
    • Your primary growth channel is marketing

    High-touch

High-touch SaaS is about building a sales engine.

    • Your product costs about $6k per year
    • People talk to your sales team to learn about and purchase your product
    • Your landing page call-to-action is “Request a demo”
    • Your primary growth channel is sales

The reason you should pick one is that it focuses on you. If you sell to a specific type of customer, in a specific way, it simplifies everything. Which features you build, how your pricing works, what you optimize your landing page for and more. Rather than doing alright at both, you can be excellent at one. Startups don’t win by being alright, they win by being excellent.

    2. Simplify Everything

You can simplify more than just your sales model. You should strive to simplify everything your users interact with. From the top of the sales funnel to the bottom: your content, ads, landing page, pricing, onboarding, product, and more. People are busy. They have short attention spans.

They’re constantly being targeted by thousands of corporate agendas. If you make something the slightest bit difficult, they won’t take the time to figure it out. They’ll drop off. They’ll stop reading your blog post. They’ll close your landing page. They’ll quit using your product.

But if you make it easy, they’re far more likely to engage. And they’ll remember that “Yeah, this is easy to use”. In the early days, you need loyal fans. You need people to love your company, otherwise, growth will be an eternal grind.

Track Customer Acquisition in SaaS-SaaS Customer Acquisition Strategy
We’d all love to drive Bentley’s and live in mansions overlooking the beach, butnot if it means spending the money your family relies on to buy food. Similarly, every business [https://startuptalky.com/tag/business-2/] wants to get as manycustomers as possible, but not if it means going broke in t…

    3. Narrow Your Target Audience

More customers = More money = Doing better. Right?
Wrong. The problem is that it makes your product and messaging unfocused. Consumer or customers need different features than SaaS customers. They also resonate with different messaging on the landing pages and in products. The consumer customers end up churning more.

It turns out that feedback is more valuable to SaaS companies because it drives revenue. Of course, hindsight is always 50-50. If you don’t know who your target audience should be, you don’t understand your users well enough. Get out of your office and talk to them.

    How to Bootstrap your Business?

    4. Ruthlessly Manage Your Time

In a start-up, there’s an endless list of things you could spend your time doing. How do you most efficiently spend your time? The worst part is that many activities feel productive but really aren’t. Take email, for example. If every time you get an email, you drop what you’re doing to deal with it, you’ll spend your entire day on email. Obviously, falling behind is a problem, but you can dedicate chunks of time to work through it. Context switches are expensive.

Another culprit is building features that aren’t mission-critical. Sometimes a customer asks for a feature, and it’s tempting to say “we’ll have it done today”. We’ve done this many times. We want to impress people and deliver value as fast as possible. It feels right, but you will end up building a lot of features that aren’t useful to many people. This isn’t an efficient use of time. It’s much better to pick one high-level strategy, and patiently execute it.

The best way to solve this is to set measurable goals. What is your team trying to accomplish this year, half, quarter, and month? What must be done to hit these goals? What can I work on today that will move the needle the most? Thinking this way helps you make unbiased decisions about how to spend your time. Otherwise, you’re just acting in the heat of the moment: inefficiently.

    5. Be Helpful

On top of these things, remember that you are in the business of helping people. People buy your product because it solves their problems. The more you can get in the mindset of helping others, the better your company will do.

    Magneto CleanTech – Industry Details

Any air-conditioned indoor space is a potential customer for Magneto CleanTech including homes, commercial spaces such as malls, movie theatres, residential complexes, hotels, hospitals, schools, restaurants, fitness centers, etc. It caters to residential, commercial, and industrial spaces. The products have been adopted by some of the largest brands in India such as Google, Apple, Uber, BMW, Airbus, Nokia, Jindal Group, Taj Hotels, Oberois, PGI Chandigarh Hospital, Godrej Properties, and DLF, to name a few.

The Indian air purification market is expected to grow at a CAGR of over 27% in the next five years. While the current penetration of air purifiers on average is less than 5% in India, the potential of business growth looks a lot higher than projected. Given the current dynamics, different segments will grow disproportionately as far as air purification is concerned. For example, the healthcare and hospitality industries might become the early adopters of high-efficiency air sanitization technology, while residential applications will grow a little later. Magneto has enjoyed a CAGR of over 60% in the last three years.

Air Ok is an IIT Madras incubated start-up incorporated on April 23, 2015 by Deekshith Vara Prasad. Read this article to know more about AirOk business model, founder, funding, revenue, wiki, how it started

    How Magneto CleanTech Started

Starting in early 2013, Himanshu recognized the growing need for improved air quality in India and began investing in the research and development of IAQ solutions. After numerous cycles of product development, the founders were able to conceive a product line specifically designed for the Indian environmental conditions in collaboration with international, core-technology providers, making it available at a price point that is viable for developing countries like India for mass adoption. This led to the birth of Magneto Cleantech in 2018. Recently, the company has seen tremendous growth in this segment and has gained great market traction.

Magneto CleanTech – Product & How it Works

Magneto CleanTech’s flagship product is the Magneto Central Air Cleaner (MCAC)— a high-efficiency ISO-certified air purification solution that not just absorbs all kinds of viruses and bacteria from the air, but also destroys them ensuring no further proliferation. Its patented ‘Trap and Kill’ technology is Magneto’s key strength and it follows a three-fold process. Magneto Central Air Cleaner works on a three-stage process. Unlike traditional air filtration, MCAC kills trapped microorganisms instead of letting them grow:

    • Impingement: Particles up to 10 microns in size are trapped.
    • Polarisation: All particulate matter and microorganisms, including viruses, when passed through this layer get charged and start getting coagulated.
    • Agglomeration: All the charged particles are trapped. The viruses and bacteria are killed and only pure and sanitized air is delivered back.

     Magneto CleanTech Founder
Himanshu Agarwal -Founder and CEO of Magneto

Headquartered in Delhi, Magneto has over 60 employees now. Its production unit is also based in Delhi. While a startup, the work culture at Magneto is more of an enterprise because it is committed to providing the best value to its customers in terms of not just product, but also service and customer care. The startup is constantly hiring professionals across business segments including engineering, sales, marketing, etc. People with an HVAC background who understand the technology and can serve its customers well are key.

Magneto CleanTech – Business Model & Revenue Model

Magneto’s direct business model has been focusing on the commercial air purification segment so far. Its product design, manufacturing, and installation have been in-house. Some of the largest brands in India have installed Magneto air purification solutions integrated with their central air-conditioning systems.

The company has started developing a dealer network across India only since last year (2020). Magneto is committed to providing complete support to its channel partners, and the startup expects that part of the business to grow in double digits YoY. The partner network is mainly focused on the consumer market for its Split and Cassette AC solutions.

Magneto CleanTech – Launch & Marketing Strategy

Magneto CleanTech was founded based on over 30-years of combined experience of the founders and key stakeholders. They already had a very strong network in the industry, which is where the company started from. Magneto started marketing its products commercially only in 2019 to expand across verticals and geographies.

Making clean air visible was a core part of its marketing and product strategy. Magneto initially started with an air purification product line, but quickly realized the importance of having air quality monitoring in its portfolio. By offering visibly clean air, the startup was able to give customers confidence in its systems in real-time applications. This became a critical piece of Magneto CleanTech’s marketing strategy, and the entire industry followed suit soon after.

    Magneto CleanTech – Challenges Faced

One of the biggest challenges was finding a technology that could work in heavy air pollution settings of India with a low operating cost.

When Magneto first entered the market, a big customer pain point was that the traditional media filter-based purification solutions had a high recurring cost, requiring filter replacement every 3 months in the heavy pollution load of metro cities. Devising a solution that could be reused without any consumables, drove the team to research alternative forms of air purification. Additionally, they recognized that in the context of India, airborne infectious diseases were already a big epidemic, especially with Tuberculosis. This drove the team to research technologies that holistically cleaned air, beyond just PM 2.5 and PM 10 to eliminate microbial contaminants as well. They spent over 5 years working and prototyping with different technologies that could satisfy these considerations before the team landed on the Magneto Central Air Cleaner product.

    2. In the next 5 years, the Instant Tea market should at least make up about 15% to 20% of the Tea consumption in India.

Tea Bro – Idea and Inspiration

Kartic is from Assam and his family has been involved in the Tea industry for over 3 generations. They have seen the industry closely for the last 38 years and have realized that there has been very little improvement/innovation. Moreover, the way people consumed tea has also been the same for over 50 years now. A TeaBag was also introduced to the world about 40 years back. The last innovation in which Instant Tea was offered was ‘Powdered Instant Tea’, which was made by a process called Spray Drying.

They found that there was no way in which companies were able to offer good quality tea in a ReadyToDrink manner. That’s when it struck that he can do something to solve this problem. After months of R&D, they came up with Tea Bro. This patent-pending product is a ‘Ready to Drink’ Tea which is pre-brewed to perfection from the finest Assam Teas with love and care. Just add TeaBro to a cup of hot water and Done! Your cup of tea is ready in 5 sec. Enjoy the perfectly balanced Milk Tea (in 5 Exotic Indian Flavours), Instantly!

They’ve had tremendous responses from Tea connoisseurs and Tea blenders and tasters about its high quality and Tea innovation. In the last 2 months, since the startup has been live, the market response (where ever Tea Bro is present) has been encouraging.

Tea Bro – Product and USP

Tea Bro’s patent-pending product is a ‘Ready to Drink’ Tea which is pre-brewed to perfection from the finest Assam Teas with love and care.

Just add Tea Bro to a cup of hot water and Done! Your cup of tea is ready in 5 sec. Enjoy the perfectly balanced Milk Tea (in 5 Exotic Indian Flavours), Instantly!

What problem is Tea Bro intending to Solve?

    • TeaBags – In using TeaBags the process of brewing is never complete. By the time brewing is complete the temperature of the water goes down. Therefore, there is never a good tea drinking experience with tea bags.
    • Premixes are easy to use but lack the quality of the cup. Premixes are made by a process called Spray Drying. Tea is only spray-dried at or above temperatures of 180C. At this temperature range, all the constituents of Tea (its flavors, aroma, enzymes, polyphenols, etc) are all burnt off. Therefore, essentially Premixes have more of a punch of masalas rather than tea.

    USP of Tea Bro

Tea Bro is a new category in the instant Tea market. It manufactures and sells India’s first ‘Pre-Brewed Tea Liquid’. This patent-pending product is a ‘Ready to Drink’ Tea which is pre-brewed to perfection from the finest Assam Teas with love and care.

    Tea Bro – Founder

Kartic Sharma is the founder of Tea Bro. Being an engineering & management graduate from the University of British Columbia, Canada, Kartic has been associated with companies like Accenture, Invest India, and Delhivery before founding Tea Bro.

The word ‘BRO’, is used very often in urban and rural India now. Even if a person does not know English very well, would know the meaning of this word. Kartic wanted to have the name of the company which is most relatable to the masses. Tea is and will be its main product always. Hence Tea Bro.

    Tea Bro – Challenges Faced

The main challenge faced by the startup was introducing its product in modern retail. They have a huge listing fee. The team worked a deal with them to offer more margin in comparison to high capital costs for listing fees and it worked better for Tea Bro.

    Tea Bro – Funding

Tea Bro is currently a bootstrapped startup.

    Tea Bro – Competitors

Currently, Tea Bro doesn’t have any direct competition for its offering, ‘Pre-Brewed Tea Liquid’. It is the first company in India to make a product of this sort and therefore for the product and the process, it has a ‘Patent Pending’ status. Instant Tea has traditionally been offered in Tea Bags or Premixes. There are hundreds of companies in India that retail these. Tea Bro is the first company in India to offer ‘Ready To Drink’ tea in a ‘Pre-Brewed Tea Liquid’ format.

    About Karma Kettle

Karma Kettle – World of Artisanal Tea

Karma Kettle is one of India’s finest artisanal tea blenders with 100+ different tea varietals. Karma Kettle is headquartered in Kolkata. The startup founded in 2015, has established itself as a specialist tea brand offering a wide variety of tea to choose from.

The company offers a wide and innovative range of tea like green tea with peach and jasmine, green tea with lychee, chamomile & lemongrass caffeine-free tree, Strawberries, Cockscomb & Hibiscus tea, Ashwagandha tea, Green tea with tulsi, ginger & marigold, Masala chai, etc.

Besides packaged tea, Karma Kettle sells loose tea leaves. Karma Kettle’s pyramid tea bags and iced tea has become quite popular among the target customer. The pyramid tea bags allow space for the tea brew to infuse properly. Karma Kettle also offers tea and teaware in different gift packages.

We launched our teas in 2014 selling them in biodegradable pyramid tea bags, although the market was very receptive to our loose leaf blended teas, the response for bio-degradable teabags was not as per our expectations (they cost Rs2-3 more than the standard pyramid teabag)- this stemmed from the lack of awareness of the benefits of switching to a biodegradable teabag.  We thus decided to move our focus back to standard pyramid teabags & loose leaves.  In 2019, the situation has changed a lot, we do get more and more requests from various B2B and B2C clients inquiring about biodegradable teabags- so reintroducing them is in our pipeline.

    Karma Kettle envisions

    • To educate the Indian consumer to look at tea beyond Chai or CTC and introduce Indians to fine artisanal teas of the world.
    • Making tea a versatile ingredient that can be enjoyed in many different forms- as a hot brew, cold brew, cocktail, mocktail, patisseries or / Tea infusions in food, cocktails and mocktails.
    • Reviving the ritual of afternoon tea in Indian households.

Founders of Karma Kettle and Team

Karma Kettle was founded by Dhiraj Arora and Priti Sen Arora in 2015.

    Founders of Karma Kettle
    Founders of Karma Kettle

Dhiraj Arora is a passionate tea connoisseur who did his specialization from the World Tea Academy USA and is also a certified tea Sommelier from Sri Lanka. He has personally blended most of these fabulous tea varietals, which are also now available in various hotel tea bars, cafes and gourmet stores across India.

Priti Sen Arora is the person behind the marketing and vibrant packaging of the Karma Kettle products.

Dhiraj and Priti co-owned two restaurants in Singapore. With their backgrounds, it only made sense to start Karma Kettle to carry back those flavors and pour out the story of their voyages in a teacup. As mentioned by Priti, Karma Kettle is inspired by global travels.

Karma Kettle aims to take you on a voyage across the globe with a teacup.

Karma Kettle currently has a young and dynamic team of 30+ members.

    How was Karma Kettle Started?

Dhiraj & Priti owns a 32 room heritage boutique hotel- Cochrane Place in Kurseong located in the center of the world-famous Darjeeling region. During this feat, they formed a lot of close associations with Darjeeling tea estate owners & planters.

They realized that most established Indian tea companies were packaging tea in a very traditional format (stand-up metallic pouches) and most of their season’s freshest picks were sent to export markets. Having already been involved with the F&B industry in Singapore, Priti and Dhiraj were convinced that India has huge potential and that tea could be packaged & marketed in a more globally appealing format.

“Voyages in a teacup” is the theme at Karma Kettle – teas inspired by travel destinations across the globe. Karma Kettle lets the Indian consumer enjoy an authentic cup of Moroccan Mint tea or Genmaicha tea or Japanese Matcha at reasonable prices. Also, every packaging weaves a story of its origin (take Istanbul as an example).

We started in 2015 with around 10 blends and today we have over 100+ blends packaged in different formats- Pyramid teabags, Loose Leaf, Double chambered teabags.

    Karma Kettle's Logo
    Karma Kettle’s Logo

Karma is at the heart of our journey which broadly translates to what goes around comes around, says Priti. Karma relates to spreading good energy through one’s actions and reap positive benefits. The Kettle is something that is always related to tea.

The name Karma Kettle was coined in 2005, much before the company was actually started in 2015. Dhiraj wanted to start a tea room in Singapore. Initially, the idea behind Karma Kettle was to take on the traditional English tea room concept. The word ‘Karma’ was added to give an Eastern feel to the name.

Deeply rooted in our company’s philosophy is the belief that tea is a healthy beverage and that in blending tea with the purest botanicals we are able to transform tea to a salubrious infusion that positively impacts peoples body, mind and spirit. We also consciously source our tea through small and medium scale tea growers positively impacting the lives of the tea plantation workers and helping them with a better livelihood.

    Karma Kettle Target Market

Karma Kettle majorly caters to the HoReCa industry – Hotels, Restaurants & Cafes. In the last couple of years, there has been a surge in gourmet cafes and restaurants in India that are looking to serve upscale food and not compromise on the quality of ingredients.

According to Karma Kettle co-founder, Priti, Gifting is another one of the biggest segments for brands like Karma Kettle – be it weddings, corporate gifts, or other similar events. Owing to their low caffeine content, wellness and health-related benefits, tea makes for an ideal gifting option. For those looking for something unique, brands often create custom blends to suit a particular occasion or event.

Increasingly artisanal teas are also making their way into gourmet food, cocktails, desserts, and much more, owing to their versatile flavor profiles.

Though India is not as experimental as the rest of the world, over time the change in people’s preference towards gourmet and local food has been visible. At the same time, Consumers also no longer just consume tea, they expect a complete tea drinking experience with an extravagant drinking option, an inviting brand vibe, etc.; They crave authenticity and the story which can connect them to the tea sommeliers. We believe the potential for growth is certainly there, especially as consumer tastes evolve in India.

  • Moneyfront – Simplifying Investment In Mutual Funds

The content in this post has been approved by the organization it is based on.

Mutual Fund is an excellent investment tool as it allows all kinds of investors access to professionally managed portfolios of equities, bonds, and other securities. The only downside is the loss of a significant portion of the investor’s returns as commissions to the mutual fund agent or distributor.

In 2013, Direct Mutual Fund plans were introduced by SEBI that permitted investors to invest directly without resorting to any agent or distributor. In direct plans, the expense ratio is low and with high returns. Still, many are hesitant to invest in mutual funds due to a lack of know-how.

    Moneyfront – About

Headquartered in Mumbai (India), Moneyfront is a Robo-advisory platform to invest in mutual funds offering direct plans. It takes pride in three principles – paperless, simplified, and automated unbiased advisory. There is negligible awareness around the concept of direct plans despite being a client-friendly and hugely beneficial option to invest in. The company promotes this concept through technology and by offering transparent advice to clients wishing to invest in mutual funds.

Moneyfront offers financial advisory services via a comprehensive portfolio approach. Using a smart algorithm, it profiles the client and suggests the best direct plans custom-tailored for the investor’s persona.

“Our target customers are all existing investors in mutual funds who are currently investing through their banks or local distributors. We want to educate this base about differences between Regular Plans which they are currently getting and ‘Direct Plans’ which we offer being a registered Investment Advisor with SEBI,” quote the Moneyfront founders.

In September 2018, Niyogin Fintech, a platform that provides collateral-free credit to MSMEs, acquired a 50% stake in Moneyfront for Rs 12 Crore.

The company is dedicated to explore new future of young minds through integrating the learning with creativity, sharing and collaboration. They develop the concepts to help understand the future needs and to make complex learning easy with effective tools and techniques.

“We believe in the future that would be written by code. In fact, the ability to code could be the ‘Next level of Literacy’.” – Shiv Ram Choudhary, founder of Codevidhya.

As an EdTech startup, Codevidhya follows the ‘Learn by Doing’ approach. Codevidhya differentiates itself by offering a futuristic Computer Science curriculum that empowers the future generation. Students are encouraged to find out real problems of the real world and solve it with the help of technology.

    Codevidhya – Target Market Size

“We consider ourselves to be in the Online(Platform) + Offline (Text Book) market both. Currently there is no player in the Indian industry who is offering this approach for coding.”, says Shiv Ram.

As such, the startup consider the entire Indian education industry from Grade 1 to Grade 10 as their market, the size of which is upwards of 250 million. Since this is a new market that is being created, they are yet to identify the potential of it, however the startup has seen a 100% YOY growth in terms of student acquisition for the past 2 years.

Codevidhya – How It All Started?

Codevidhya was built around the idea that in India we have around 45% of the population under age 24, yet there is a big unemployment pool. Initially, Shiv Ram, founder of Codevidhya, had a discussion with several experts and each one of them had their own views. When he collated those thoughts and did differential analysis he came to one conclusion that we are not adequately skilled. Finding the solution to this issue was itself a problem as the education system in India is still archaic.

When the founder visited Canada to attend a seminar with Robin Sharma, he met this young kid Tanmay Bakshi. He had a discussion with him for more than one hour and it was an enlightenment for Shiv Ram. Then & there, Codevidhya as an idea was incepted, that the problem is in the core. If we shape our children from the grassroot level then in future they will have a skill.

As Shiv Ram says, “Right now everyone is thinking in a reactive way, I thought why reactive and let’s be proactive and catch them young and shape their future. There is a drawback in this thinking that the results of your efforts will come after 10-15 years, but yes we are ready to take that risk, as it is a noble cause as well as we are addressing the issue from very basic, making things foundational.”

Shiv Ram came back to India and discussed with his in-house tech people (people in his school) and met Rajesh, who along with a team of four developers gave basic shape to the idea. Basic concept or say mission and vision of Codevidhya is to Enable Students to Create; using Technology leading to Entrepreneurship and become Global Powerhouse of Skill Development for tomorrow’s world.
