    How was Plai Started?

While working at their previous company (Uptech), founders Andriy Bas, Sasha Chepurnoi, and Oleh Kryvytskyi faced the need to align the team around common goals (OKRs), share feedback, conduct performance reviews, etc. They didn’t find any suitable solutions to meet their needs. Almost all performance management software is designed for enterprises (with annual contracts) and is too complicated and too expensive for smaller companies. And most importantly – employees don’t use them unless forced to.

So, Andriy, Sasha, and Oleh bootstrapped a solution for their needs with the combination of Google Docs/Spreadsheets/Notion. And this gave them the idea for Plai. They did some research, and over 20+ companies confirmed their hypothesis. Most early-stage companies have similar problems with performance management and struggle the way the co-founders did.

Andriy, Sasha, and Oleh quickly created a landing page and launched it in 2 weeks. They posted about it on social, BetaList, BetaPage. After receiving positive feedback and 500+ beta sign-ups, they started working on the solution.

It was one of the options that we came up with initially, it was short and concise, there was no much competition on the internet for this short name, all the team liked it, so we adopted it from the beginning”, says Andriy Bas, CEO of Plai, about the selection of the name.

    Plai – Startup Launch

Plai launched the landing page in July 2019 before any product development. By promoting the product idea on BetaList/BetaPage websites and social media, the team collected over 500 beta sign-ups. These were the original users. Then, as they started working on the product, they were writing regular blog posts, and the traffic was also attracting subscribers and early users.

That way, by the time the startup launched in October 2019, it had over 2000 email lists to notify. These were the users of the free version of the product. By March 2020, when Plai launched the Pro version of the product, it managed to convert 5 users to paying subscribers. And have been growing almost 50% month-over-month in MRR ever since.

    Plai – Startup Challenges

One of the first major challenges — was to identify what exactly customers need, and thus how the product should look like. To understand that — the founders launched very fast, gave their product in the hands of users, and asked for feedback. Based on that, they iterated many times and every time gave a better and better understanding of what the customers needed.

For example, the team initially planned to build the “Reviews” feature last. But customers were asking for this feature almost immediately and were willing to pay for it. Thus, Plai prioritized it and delivered it much faster than it initially planned to.

    What is a Bootstrapped Startup?

    Bootstrapped startups
    Bootstrapped startups

Bootstrapped startups are those businesses, where you don’t take capital from an outside source or venture capitalist and totally depend on your own funds for the survival and growth of the business. There is no process for external funding here, you are the leader here and you need to take all kind of decision that is necessary for your business.

Pros and Cons of a Bootstrapped Startup

    Pros:

    • The thing about bootstrapped startups is that the founder doesn’t have to depend on outside investors for the funds and the ownership solely belongs to the founder.
    • The founder of the business needs to just focus on the business products and services and there is no need for issuing equity.
    • The control of the business belongs to the founder and they don’t get succumbed to any pressures by anyone and have the control to take any important decision regarding the business.

    Cons:

    What is a Funded Startup?

    Funding your Startup
    Funding your Startup

While starting a business, an amount is needed as an investment. There are some startups who decide to raise amounts from the public as the fund for the company. Here you look out for investors also known as venture capitalists, who are actually interested in your business and they provide you with your required amount of capital in return for your company’s equity.

Pros and Cons of a Funded Startup

There are some advantages and limitations that one faces when they chose to raise funds from the public for their business and they are:

    Pros:

    • Funding from outside provides businesses with lots of opportunities related to finance which in turn becomes a big factor in the fast growth of their business.
    • The Investors who are funding the business guide the owner of the startup with their experience, if the need arises.
    • The connections of these investors can be a plus point for the startup and it can help them in earning the trust of the public.

    Cons:

    • When external forces started involved in the business, decisions related to payments, finance, equity by the startup founder become limited.
    • The founder loses a big amount of the company to the investors and thus holds a very small part of it.

    Example of a Funded Startup

    Flipkart: Funded by Venture Capital

    Flipkart Logo
    Flipkart Logo

This online shopping website was founded by Binny Bansal and Sachin Bansal in the year 2007. The online E-Commerce company that started its journey by selling books now sells everything. In the year 2018, Flipkart got its first fund from Junglee and Helion Venture’s founder Ashish Gupta. After that, Flipkart received $10 million from Tiger Global Management. Tiger Global Management is an American investment firm.

Flipkart keeps getting bigger and bigger with various investments by the investors It even acquired Myntra in the year 2014 for $270 million dollars. In 2018 Walmart acquired Flipkart and became the fund provider of the business and Walmart now owns almost an 82.3% stake in the Indian E-Commerce giant. It has raised almost $12.6 billion. As per reports, the current value of Flipkart is $37.6 billion as of 2021.

Funding Vs Bootstrapped Startup: Factors That Entrepreneurs Must Consider

In the choice between funding and bootstrapped, one must decide what they want with their business. Here they need to consider some factors that would help them in deciding between funding and bootstrapping. Those factors are:

    Objective

The main aim of your business is one of the prime factors that help you in deciding the future of your startup. If you just want a profitable business, bootstrap is the option for you. On the other hand, if you want your business to have maximum revenue growth then, external funding is the answer.

    Pace of Growth

When you are the only one who is investing in your business, the growth will be slower in pace. As the resources you have, including the financial ones, are limited in nature. While funded business provides resources like new connections and finances thus the growth is way faster.

    Control

In a Bootstrapped startup, you have control over your startup. Whatever the important decision is, your call is the last one. On the other hand, funded startups don’t give you that much freedom, where you can take the final decision for your startup as it involves the investors who are funding your business.

    Conclusion

In the end, the decision of choosing between funding and bootstrapping is yours. If you decided to bootstrap your business, in the future you can go for funding as well. Whatever you do, you need to consider the factors while making the decision, because the survival of your business depends on this.

EasyPoker – About and How it Works

EasyPoker is the digital substitute for the traditional silver case poker set. This means you can use the EasyPoker app to host poker nights with friends – no physical poker chips or playing cards needed.

The app’s core mission is to bring back live poker with friends by making it as easy and convenient as online poker – all while still maintaining the feel of classic face-to-face poker.

At the moment the team is focusing on delivering COVID-19 friendly poker nights, making sure casual players don’t have to cancel their weekly games during the pandemic.

    EasyPoker – Target Market Size

EasyPoker is operating in the market of both online poker and classic “offline” poker. Worldwide approximately 400,000,000 people consider themselves casual or experienced poker players. The market has a 12% CAGR (source: Adroit Market Research).

The market will become more digitized and using virtual playing cards and chips will become the new normal. This will both have something to do with convenience, connecting friends across borders, and the international COVID-19 pandemic that has put extra focus on the spread of bacteria by human interaction.

And on top of this, the company, of course, operate in the market of ‘casual gaming’, since the app is removing the usual struggles of facilitating face-to-face poker, meaning a game of poker with your friends will be just a tap away – probably leading to more frequent, casual games.

    How was EasyPoker Started?

Tobias Oliver Eberhard, a co-founder of EasyPoker, had the idea for EasyPoker years back on a trip with his friends. They wanted to play poker but did not have a poker set. They ended up ripping small pieces of paper and cracking matches to use as “poker chips”.

Back then he was working on another startup so did not have the time to pursue this obvious gap in the market. Two years later Tobias ended up selling his first startup and then went to pursue the idea of making social poker digital. Tobias met his co-founders in college.

“We hit it off right away, as we all had an interest in digital entrepreneurship and apps. Before starting any development we created an interactive (non-functional) prototype using the Marvel App. We gave it to our friends in the poker community and asked for feedback on the concept”, recalls Tobias Oliver Eberhard, founder of EasyPoker.

After that, they started posting pictures and videos of the prototype on social media to see the reactions of potential users. Overall, people liked what the team was working on, as most of them had been in a situation missing a poker set themselves. They collected and analyzed all the feedback they had gotten and then started the official development.

    EasyPoker – Products/Services

The app works kind of like “Kahoot” for poker. A user creates a table and gets a 4 digits game code that he/she shares with his friends.

    EasyPoker - Features
    EasyPoker – Features

The app is designed to feel as close to using playing cards and poker chips in real life as possible. This means a completely new design compared to traditional poker apps. The app also does not offer players to buy chips to use in the game – It’s all included, which means no gambling of your real-life money (even simulated).

    EasyPoker – Founders and Team

Tobias Oliver Eberhard, Ulrik Hunskjær, Martin Jensen, and Anders Eggert are the founders of EasyPoker.

    EasyPoker Founders
    EasyPoker Founders

One of the co-founders (Ulrik Hunskjaer) is Tobias’s cousin and the other two they met in college. They all have a BA in Multiplatform Storytelling & Production. Tobias (CEO of EasyPoker) and Anders Eggert (CFO) have a technical background from college while Ulrik (COO) and Martin Jensen (CGO) specialized in product development, marketing, and storytelling.

“It was actually pretty easy to convince the guys to start the app business as we have all just finished college and were looking to be a part of a startup or similar. I had recently just exited my old company and Ulrik Hunskjaer had just left a job at Niantic Labs (Pokemon GO, Ingress) as he wanted to pursue his own app ideas. It pretty much lined up perfectly”, says Tobias Eberhard, CEO of EasyPoker.

Today the company has 5 employees – the 4 founders and a backend developer. They have a small office in Aarhus, but since the COVID-19 outbreak been working mostly remotely.

EasyPoker was the first “working title” the company had when the team first started development. The name is very generic and it’s not how Tobias would normally name a startup. But other poker apps (which they needed to stand out from) all had “creative” non-generic names. This meant they had to be thinking simple to stand out from the crowd.

    EasyPoker Logo

The app’s entire design is aimed to be as clean and effective as possible. According to Tobias, the team aims to design the app, logo, and marketing material as if Apple had to make a poker app. This means a clean, no-nonsense design and communication. Normally this would not make you stand out, but general poker marketing is very cluttered and sketchy, so it works well for EasyPoker.

EasyPoker – Business Model and Revenue Model

EasyPoker is also the first poker app to base its whole app on a subscription business model. The subscription gives access to extra features and bigger tables.

EasyPoker works on a subscription based business model. The pricing is $5.99 monthly, $29.99 every 6 months or $39.99 annual.

    EasyPoker – Startup Launch

As the team started posting images and videos of their prototype on social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Reddit, YouTube, they already had 1000+ email subscribers when launching (using a landing page created in WordPress + MailChimp). The founders managed to get most of them to sign up to become early users after the soft launch.

Fun fact: The app did not officially launch until it had 150k users.

EasyPoker – User Acquisition and Growth

The startup has been looking into growth hacking, making it easy for users to invite more players right from within the app. Other than that they have created web content and done a lot of SEO/ASO. Recently the product launched on Product Hunt where it became the #1 Product of the day.

Today, EasyPoker has about 7,000 paying subscriptions on its platform. The platform has seen significant growth in the last 4 months and expects it to continue. The founders are looking for an investment that can help scale the product even more.

    EasyPoker – Startup Challenges

“We had a lot of challenges along the way. One major challenge was with a former team member that left the company. He wanted out and we had to keep going without him. We ended up hiring a replacement that we paid out of our own pocket.

After some months the former member wanted to re-join the company, making it a difficult situation for the team as we did not have a clear legal standpoint of what to do. Everything worked out in the end, but this has taught us to have professional contracts designed by lawyers. It’s expensive but worth it”, recalls Tobias about the challenges faced by the startup.

    EasyPoker – Funding and Investors

EasyPoker is currently bootstrapped and is looking for an investment that can help scale the product even more.

    EasyPoker – Recognition and Achievements

According to the founder, launching the app is itself a big achievement. Most people don’t get this far. Second is successfully monetizing the users. The third is being able to make a living off an app you build yourself. And then of course being voted ‘#1 Product of the day’ on Product Hunt was a huge win, since the members there are often people from the tech industry.

Caliverse – About & How It Works

Caliverse is a calisthenics fitness app that provides more than 200 exercises with professional videos and descriptions. Users have free access to more than 70 professionally made workouts and more than 10 workout plans. Of course, tracking progress, competing with other users, and participating in live workout sessions with coaches. This all is available in Caliverse.

    Caliverse Features

Caliverse is working together with the largest calisthenics community in the UK – United Calisthenics Group – and together the big goal is to make calisthenics more popular and accessible to everyone. The company believes that lack of knowledge is the biggest problem in calisthenics and Caliverse is here to fix this.

    Name, Logo & Tagline

“I knew that I want to make an app that is accessible to everyone in this universe so after some hard time thinking the name, when I was trying to fall asleep I came up with this name – Caliverse. Calisthenics for the whole universe”, says Daniels about selecting the name for the app.

    Caliverse – Target Market Size

Caliverse is in health and fitness industry which is huge – more and more people are starting to do some sports activities because their everyday life requires to sit in the office for the whole day. Hundreds of millions of people are willing to work out on a daily basis. And it is targeting some part of this user base.

One of the biggest calisthenics mobile app – Freeletics – has more than 20 million users. And of course, there are many other calisthenics apps out there. My guesstimate is that the calisthenics industry has more than 100 million users. And this market size is big enough to work hard.

Calisthenics and fitness, in general, are not going anywhere – people will do sports more and more. At the moment this is a suggestion to do but it might become a mandatory thing told by doctors if people want to keep their body healthy in upcoming years.

Caliverse – How was Caliverse Started?

Daniels Pitkevics, the founder of Caliverse, started doing calisthenics a few years but was jumping on and off training – couldn’t really get into the right routine, didn’t knew much about calisthenics in general and couldn’t find the right information source which he really enjoyed using. Tried out many different calisthenics apps, like, Freeletics, Calisteniapp, MadBarz but no one was perfect for him. And since he is a programmer himself, he just thought – “why I am not making an app that suits my needs myself?”

So Daniels started working on the app. In a random coincidence, he met United Calisthenics Group who helped him with making content, and at that point he understood that it is actually doable. So, half a year later, Caliverse was released. And now, when the team is celebrating it’s 1st birthday, they have got really far and that is only because of the great people in the company.

    Caliverse – Product/Services

Caliverse teaches users how to do proper calisthenics training – how to perform each exercise, how to structure a workout, and workout plan. Live workout sessions help users to learn from professional coaches all around the world and of course to have someone if they are doing the exercise correctly.

    Caliverse - App
    Caliverse – App

“Our biggest focus is to give users this feeling that they always have a person to contact in case of questions – these persons are Caliverse coaches. No other calisthenics app out there does that. And we are doing it for free”, says Daniels Pitkevics, CEO of Caliverse.

    Caliverse – Team

Then, when Caliverse started to grow bigger, more than 10 000 users were using it, he was in a way required to find a person that can help hi, more than providing content and of course, a person who could help him to take the company to the next level.

So, meet Cambo, a friend of the founder, part of the United Calisthenics Group, and a professional athlete and coach. He is a big help with content, ideas, social media, business, and user support. Having Cambo on board was one of the best decisions.

But of course, there are many people involved. Woj, coach, and owner of his own gym – Calisthenics Basingstoke – does a great job running weekly handstand series, promoting Caliverse, and coming up with some super cool ideas on how to make it even better. And others – Paddy, Eddie, Danny, Ibby, Ali, Sherman, Ben, Jacob, Aaron – they all have participated in making Caliverse what it is now.

Caliverse – Business Model & Revenue Model

At the moment everything is free and without ads – even live workout sessions with coaches. Monetization part is what the team is thinking of but nothing to announce public yet.

    Caliverse – Startup Launch

Getting the first 100 users was sort of easy – friends, family, people that were targeted by United Calisthenics Group. That basically covered first 100 users.

Caliverse – User Acquisition & Growth

The company hasn’t basically spent anything on marketing. There are some random test ads for $10 that basically did nothing. A few giveaways that also didn’t attract many users. It was hard work by making new features, being active on social media, and open to every question users have.

There have been 3 biggest jumps in users

    • First was when Calisthenics 101 wrote a blog article that included a review on the most popular calisthenics apps and had Caliverse there.
    • The second was due to COVID-19 pandemic – it made everyone be at home without any gym access so people were searching for ways to workout at home and Caliverse is offering exactly that.
    • The third jump was quite recent and it is a big one but Daniels still have no idea why it happened 🙂

    Caliverse – Startup Challenges

Most challenging is time planning – Daniels work full-time, He has a wife that he wants to spend time with, he is doing workouts at least several times per week and has to find the time to build Caliverse. But it can be done.

“Now, I really can tell that there is no such thing as ‘I don’t have time for that’. People don’t have time only for things they don’t really want to do. If there is a will, there is a way”, says developer Daniels.

    Caliverse – Future Plans

It is Caliverse’s first birthday on July 17 so the team was gathering some statistics. One of the most impressive – more than a million push-ups have been done through the app. It now has approximately 20,000 users, several thousand users are using it every week. Only 8 countries in the world are not using Caliverse, so it has covered basically every place.

The goal for this year is to have 100,000 users. Of course, the plan is to introduce some features that might bring some income – this is crucial if the team wants to make Caliverse a world-class fitness app because everything costs – designers, programmers, marketing, etc.

    How Was DesignerPeople Started

DesignerPeople was launched in 2003. The company initiated work with international clients only. DesignerPeople had clients from the US, Canada, UK and New Zealand. The company received good response abroad and was planning to expand. Meanwhile, the Indian SME market was gradually becoming mature enough to understand the value of branding and marketing. So eventually DesignerPeople set up its base in India in the year 2012.

We were lucky enough that when we launched in India, awareness regarding this sector started to grow. Knowledge and technical skills we gathered from international clients and New Zealand office helped us to stand out in the market. We even increased the number of services later as we predicted an immense requirement in India for branding, marketing and packaging .

    Humsafar – Latest News

November 26, 2020 – Humsafar announced that it has tied up with Okara Group to launch doorstep diesel delivery services across cities in Maharashtra including Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Thane, Nashik. As part of the deal, it will provide technical and digital support to the new venture under the strategic alliance.

In a statement,  Humsafar reported that it has received an order of 120 automated mobile fuel dispensing bowsers for Okara Fuelogics for diesel delivery. Okara Fuelogics will utilize the ‘Fuel Humsafar’ app for its orders.

Dilpreet Sadana, Co-founder and Technology Head at Humsafar said: “Our alliance with Okara Group is mainly to provide doorstep diesel delivery services in Maharashtra and to help entities like housing societies, industries as well as malls with a regular supply of diesel”.

Humsafar – About and How it Works

Humsafar, a consumer brand of Samridhi Highway Solutions Pvt Ltd, offers doorstep diesel refueling services to industries that require diesel for equipment. Humsafar’s solution promises convenience, easy-to-use technology, and cost-effective alternatives to traditional methods of diesel procurement. With the assurance of safety and zero wastage, it is leading last-mile delivery in diesel while enabling a safer environment for all.

The team’s vision for Humsafar is to make ‘last-mile connectivity’ efficient, convenient, and safe. Once the government legalized Doorstep Diesel Delivery (DDD) in 2017, the startup jumped at the opportunity to make a difference.

“As a fourth-generation fuel entrepreneur, I was eager to make the change from operating retail outlets to bringing in innovation into the fuel industry. Today, we are proud of the impact Humsafar has had in the lives of our customers”, says Sanya Goel, founder of Humsafar India.

    Humsafar India

    Humsafar – Target Market Size

The government of India amended the Petroleum Regulations to enable Doorstep Diesel Delivery for static equipment, as well as heavy machinery. Petroleum and Safety Organisation (PESO) consequently drafted protocols to be followed at the point of loading and unloading, means of safe transportation, and protocols to oversee and facilitate the process with adequate training.

Going by the recent announcements, the fuel industry is set to further liberalize the market and pave avenues for new market segments for Diesel, Petrol, and CNG door delivery. The demand for fuel per year is at 85 billion liters, out of which approximately 43% of the demand is for diesel. This demand poses a huge opportunity for the doorstep diesel delivery market in the country.

Currently, besides Oil Company Dealers who have top-loading gantry facilities, a few startups are actively operating in this sector. The segment has already proven to be a disrupter. Notwithstanding resistance at certain levels, the segment is set to see a large number of dealers enter and expand their reach.

MOPNG and Oil companies are also enabling the scale-up by easing up the sector and bringing in additional regulations in view of the flammable nature of the product. Startups can increase the scope and area of operations that will enable them to break even faster and generate revenues.

    How was Humsafar Started?

“I would always join my father at various retail outlets and observed that many rickshawala’s would come in with barrels, fill it up with diesel and then load it. My first thought was – why in this day and age, we still have to do such hard labour to load and unload diesel, a necessary commodity. Surely there has to be a better way. I couldn’t fathom the thought of effort and all sorts of safety violations that were involved in this process. This made me question the available alternatives at hand to find out that there were none. None that was legal anyway”, recalls Sanya while talking about the idea of Humsafar.

When Sanya began with her groundwork, she discovered a large pool of customers who were facing pilferage, safety, quality, and quantity issues when it came to transporting diesel from point A to point B. The answer that then lay before her was simple – a solution that can promise delivery with the assurance of safety, zero wastage, and cost-effectiveness.

“If I had to pick a Eureka moment, it would be the moment my father decided to support the idea. He always gave me the freedom to explore, come up with solutions and is always ready to give me a shot”, says Sanya Goel, owner of Humsafar.

While Sanya had her father’s support, the government too opened the sector for deliveries and that paved the way to this becoming a reality. The initial days were challenging and at times frustrating with revenues taking time to come in, ensuring good quality with limited resources, etc. But as they proceeded, they learned to perfect processes, streamline operations and ensure efficiency with whatever resources available.

    Humsafar India Delivery Trucks
    Humsafar India Delivery Trucks

Apart from directly catering to diesel delivery needs, it also provides a 360-degree solution for the market itself. The startup fabricates PESO approved Bowsers to enable other partners to deliver diesel in a safe, compliant manner. Apart from loading at petrol stations, they are also authorized to pick up diesel from oil terminals directly.

Humsafar initially started with Loyalty programs for retail outlets, moved to diesel delivery services, and eventually to Bowser Fabrication services. They’re also going to be venturing into the smaller volume segment, Jerry Cans, for 20 liters deliveries of diesel.

What sets the company apart is its ability to offer end-to-end solutions:

    • There is already time tested Petrol pump partners, their own bowsers, and the Fuel Humsafar app, which demonstrates the solid experience in the product – the company operates in every touchpoint of the ecosystem.
    • 75-year legacy – This assurance of trust in the quality and quantity of diesel being delivered truly sets them apart. They are an established name in the industry, and customers believe in them.
    • Ability to deliver diesel swiftly – The company delivers diesel within 8 hours. They’re able to achieve this with the number of partner petrol stations they have along with a large number of Bowsers available at any given time in the area of operation.
    • Going beyond diesel delivery, the team is actively trying to bring about a behavioral change in the procurement method. They want everyone to stop using illegal, unsafe methods and shift to legal, safe alternatives. They’re building a safe ecosystem around us by also helping other retail outlets safely transport diesel.
    • The company offers convenient solutions with easy-to-use technology. It makes the entire procurement process straightforward and simple so that anyone, anywhere can use it anytime.

    Humsafar – Business Model

Humsafar India works on three business models

    1. Diesel Door Delivery Services: The startup operates via the app Fuel Humsafar’, available on both, Play Store and Apple Store. It primarily delivers diesel for static or heavy machinery in the B2B segment. Its customers include Hospitals, Farmers, Hotels, Construction sites, Schools, Factories, etc.
    2. Technology: It has various partner retail outlets who in turn, offer Diesel Door delivery service of their own. To them, the company franchise the tech platform.
    3. Bowser Fabrication Services: Going beyond the tech platform, Humsafar India also offers Bowser Fabrication services to ensure a safer environment for the transportation of diesel. The DDD industry is all set to boom and as many as 4000-5000 retail outlets are set to offer delivery services. To this end, ensuring diesel is transported in PESO compliant bowsers is the top priority. They have successfully fabricated over 47 bowsers in the last five months of the service introduction.

    Humsafar – Revenue Model

As described above, there are three distinct pillars for revenue inflow:

    1. Diesel Door Delivery: Revenue in the DDD model comes in through the delivery charges associated with the service. They are now able to convert these casual customers into captive customers. Incidentally, this is also the most profitable market segment as it is very large, they do not require bulk volumes nor do they seek discounts/credits.
    2. Technology: Petrol pump dealers join as Vendor partners in various locations all over the country, against a franchise fee. Besides, vendor partners pay a margin for new volumes brought in by the organization using their field Marketing team.
    3. Humsafar brand of Bowsers Fabrication

“Back in 2016, we ran loyalty programmes for partner retail outlets to reward cash customers who bought diesel regularly from us. This loyalty programme was called Humsafar. The programme was a success, it helped create a network of customers and build trust among them”, says Sanya Goel, Humsafar founder.

When they ventured into the Diesel Door Delivery space, they chose to continue with Humsafar as the customers were already familiar with the brand. The name Humsafar came about to convey that we are with you in your journey.

    Humsafar Logo
    Humsafar India Logo

Breaking down the logo, Humsafar is represented by fuel and a road. The road signifies both, the journey that one undertakes and more directly, a representation of doorstep delivery. The fuel drop consists of two parts, the blue stands for loyalty and companionship, and the orange indicates energy. As a whole, it represents Fuel that is loyal, energizing and with you during your journey.

    • Humsafar reported revenue of Rs 22 million (2019-20). It has delivered nearly 5.5 million litres of fuel valued at Rs 325 million during the year.

It was a challenge to get customers to order diesel via an app. It required a behavior change and the team had to be patient while they built awareness around it. With steady communication about the benefits, the emphasis on legal means of diesel procurement and the dangers of illegal procurements had a positive effect on the target audience.

Once the customers experienced the app, there was no turning back. They loved how easy and convenient it was to use it and turned into active ambassadors. It’s an absolute delight when your customers accept and value your service.

The challenge post the initial 50 customers was to partner with retail outlets to expand the footprint. It required them to take the plunge and see the benefits themselves. They also used field marketing and social media marketing tools extensively to target specific geographic areas to build awareness and encourage trial.

The company is currently active in 12 states across the country including Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, and Rajasthan to name a few. They have fabricated over 47 bowsers in a short period of time and hope to expand their footprints to other areas soon.

    Humsafar – Startup Challenges

The company’s biggest challenges have been the following –

    1. To educate customers about the availability of safe, legal alternatives to diesel delivery services.
    2. To remain competitively priced (they sell at MRP only).

To address these challenges, the team began actively communicating to customers about the benefits and convenience of shifting to legal, safe diesel delivery solutions and price-wise, they acquired customers in large numbers so that they can work on the economies of scale.

    Humsafar – Awards

The startups has been covered by India Today in their Coffee Table book for “Entrepreneurs under 30” for an organisation using tech in last-mile solutions, enabling accessibility to basic facilities.

    Humsafar – Future Plans

The team has exciting plans for the future. At a macro level, they want to sustain the economies around work. They want to be among the top 3 diesel door delivery companies and lead the market evolution. They also want to work on the ‘last-mile delivery’ as a core capability and look outside of diesel deliveries too.

The company’s immediate plans include –

    1. Onboarding more partner petrol stations to widen the area of operations
    2. Expand services to other major cities
    3. Work on franchise models of the business
    4. Tap into new customer segments in a cost-effective manner
    5. Continue to bring in cutting-edge technology into Bowser Fabrication and innovate across segments.

    Kleinetics – How it started?

Dr. Tejal Kanwar was always keen to contribute to the development of children. She observed how Indian children were lacking fitness and consequently becoming prone to diseases, and felt the urge to develop something that would bridge the gap. To answer why it leaped into Entrepreneurship, Dr. Tejal Kanwar realized the gap between the need for fitness and the actual physical activities performed by children.

As a practicing surgeon and a gynecologist specializing in adolescent health and PCOS for over 18 years, she wanted to place physical fitness alongside reading, writing and arithmetic and urge children to be physically literate through fun games and learning. This made her shape up the idea of Kleinetics that would bring a quantifiable difference in children’s fitness through its regime of activities.

As the idea struck her, she developed this unique program that positioned fitness alongside education, aiming to raise it to a form of literacy. Initially, the program was piloted as a community project, for children and adults alike. The first kids’ class was launched in Tejal’s complex with the help of fitness experts, which got diversified into premium Mumbai residential complexes in the early days. Success followed soon after and various schools have lapped up the ‘Make in India’ product and there’s no looking back.

    Kleinetics – Startup Launch

Kleinetics aims at building kids into confident individuals on the playground so that they could hit the ball harder, endure hours of play, accept a loss and get back on their feet, be team players, and learn to manage their time balancing sports and academics.

The methodology they were using was first-of-a-kind, there was no marketing. The program was a big hit and the word spread that the children are enjoying this activity. Moms were their biggest ambassadors.

Kleinetics – Business Model and Revenue Model

Kleinetics applied human-centered-design principles to the go-to-market, and it was evident that they would be able to sell the idea only if the class was in school or near the home since parents preferred not to travel. Kids gained in group dynamics and social gains.

The business model commenced with a slow, steady approach, without any marketing. Moms were the biggest ambassadors. Even if one child liked a demo, the mother would pass the word around helping generate warm leads. Kleinetics is a self-funded start-up, it strives to rely on one of the most direct ways of generating revenue.

    Kleinetics – Startup Challenges

The major challenge faced by Dr. Tejal Kanwar, Founder and CEO of Kleinetics was that her husband too was in an early-stage start-up. Most noteworthy, they were stretching resources and risking stability. But all doubts dissipated as everyone – her in-laws– were very supportive and encouraged her to take the plunge.

The early days were a blur, with no office. She worked from home, having equipment in the car. The team became her extended family. Interviews, several coffees, excel sheets, prop training, brainstorming new ideas, small victories, chief coach cooking lunch for the team, dousing daily fires, farewells and lots of problem-solving happened in her home.

Every single morning with her husband, the coffee ritual for 4 years has been to talk about work, where she picks his brains, argues and solves problems. Sometimes the discussions spill over to dinner, and the kids will politely ask them to shut up.

Probably the lowest point came early. They always knew that schools would provide for maximum impact and a larger number of receptive kids. Excitedly she went in for the first appointment as the principal was receptive, saying their academically-oriented kids would benefit.

The frustration started when they were handed over to the PT teacher. The portly gentleman blocked them saying they were no match for him. He yelled at them till they were out of the gate. The very person who should have resonated with their message the most was the most threatened. Subsequently with the blessings of encouraging parents in school PTA’s who evangelized their cause, helped get buy-in from the PT faculty.
